It's nice to see somebody talk about the underground bands. So often these KZread Punk documentaries only mention Minor Threat, Black Flag, Bad Religion and NOFX, as if these were the most underground bands out there.

bro they weren't playing punk shows not even back then, they formed in what 1992? have u ever seen em live??? Mike goes just as hard on stage as he did back in the 90s and early 2000s it's dope AF! I wish I could see em at a hometown show in a more intimate setting. they used to have hatebreed opening for THEM back in the day like at The Chance and at NYC shows a lot too tho 😅 the scene was super violent back then, virtually no cops EVER at shows back in the 90s haha 😅 That's crazy....

Just about the scene in general and the bands he used to see play back then, I was a crusty little punk and he was into a lot of punk and hardcore so we talked a lot. This was back in 2003-2004 so it’s been a long time. And yes, we used to go see them play in Poughkeepsie when they would play shows on the weekends.

@@calicojakk9974 yeah That's the city the chance is in right? but AOW is technically from Newburgh though right aren't they a little bit upstate from NYC? I mean they played all those venues in the NY are like Philly at the Unitarian Church n shit, the jersey venues, Webster hall way up north , then which venue is the big one in Connecticut, it's a club where like ALL the shows are at in CN I don't remember it's damn name though!! the acacia strain always plays there. is it the Palladium? or is that place is Mass?? im from the Pittsburgh/Erie/Cleveland/Youngstown area so im not super proficient in all them venues over there lol

SO glad you mentioned Sick of it All! That was my first NYHC band I really got into, I was in Jr high lol back in the 90s. It was so awesome 🤘🏼

Queens, NY is huge influence on sound of NYHC...it was nicknamed "Heavy Metal Queens" before hardcore. It's bc so many metalhead kids happened to be from that borough and they brought it into hardcore. (FYI..majority of NYHC bands were from Queens)

New York Hardcore is super influential on so much modern aggressive music. I’m a fan of the metallic hardcore stuff and old school NYHC bands. But as we grow older I’m beginning to love the youth crew stuff a ton. Congratulations on two years of sobriety by the way! My top three bands are Cro Mags, Madball and Shelter

No matter what, NYHC is always my go to music to feel good. And workouts. And housecleaning. Shits just dope, and I’m not even saying that because I’m from NYC.

So glad I grew up in the 80s hanging out in the LES seeing all these bands and being in the scene

There was a paper called "the village voice" and it would have listings in the back of whqt bands were playing at what clubs etc. So me and my buddy George would check and see who was playing where, hop on the LIRR train and head into Manhattan, grab a subway from 34th down town to Houston Street, and walk over. We were both 16 at the time. I also played there once too with a hard-core band (nutjob). Great times man. Now I'm old and broken and can't wait to get out of NYC. Times change and politicians combined with technology ruin everything

No mention of Kraut?! They were a huge part of the creation of the NY hardcore scene at the very start of the 80s. With guitarist Doug Holland later joining Cro-Mags and appearing on their first 3 albums.

Fuck yeah.. knew those guys. First met after they opened up for The Clash at Bonds .One of the best early HC shows was their Adjustment to society release show at The Cadillac Club. Opening up was Antidote...fucking awesome. I think they set the definitive sound for NYHC musically.Louie was awesome front man his vocals were more aggressive, less whiney than other early HC especially LA scene bands. We got them to come out to Jersey a few times playing at Patrix's in Brunswick and other long gone venues. Nunzio gave me a huge stack of Thou shall not kill 45s . I handed them out to friends in other bands like candy. Who knew that they would be like gold for collectors years later.

Only recently found your channel and loving it 🙏 Being from Australia I’ve witnessed the local scene evolve/dissolve and rehash itself. Love NYHC as it was my introduction to hardcore. My brother returned from the USA in 1997 with SOIA’s Built To Last, California Takeover (Snapcase; Strife & Earth Crisis Live) and Rev Records In-Flight Program… changed my life forever. 44 this year and still love hardcore, punk and all it’s branches

Earth crisis is the fuckin SHIT!!!! I remember sitting in my homies room in high school and being introduced to them. Absolutely stunning! I listen to them almost every day still!

I’m more of a metal person who has been getting really into punk (pretty much all I’ve been listening to the past few months), so while I’ve heard many good things about the NY hardcore scene, I have yet to listen to more than a couple bands from it (I absolutely love Reagan Youth, Gorilla Biscuits and Agnostic Front though). Iwas lucky enough to meet (and got to record their vocals on our album) Vinnie and Roger when we toured with them here in Australia and man when Cro mags came that was amazing, John gave me his book and bout 3-4 other books on Krishna and veggie diets. I didnt get into those but his book is amazing.

My top 3 NY Hardcore bands is Earth Crisis. Really cool to see Knuckledust getting a mention. The LBU scene in London was/is super interesting and I love when people outside the UK recognise it.

Cool video. I got to see Youth of Today and Gorilla biscuits when they toured the U.K. in the very early ‘90s. Great gigs. My band also got to open for Slapshot in around 1990 in Liverpool.

The Youth Brigade you mentioned in the beginning was the Los Angeles band that founded BYO records. The other Youth Brigade on Dischord Records are from D.C.

Man, I grew up on Agnostic Front, Madball, SOIA, Biohazard, Carnivore, Life of Agony, Murphy's Law, etc. And speaking of Murphy's Law, I'm seeing em next Thursday with Ignite. Will be my 7th time seeing Jimmy and Co. Always a fun time! Great video, dude! I subscribed, so I'll definitely be checking out more stuff. Awesome hearing from a guy 20 years younger than me who's so into this stuff. I envy how easily accessible this music is to kids these days. I used to go to those Sunday matinees at cbgb's. if you never heard of lethal aggression and crucial fun those are two pioneering Jersey bands from that era. And personally, I love when people bring attention to the scene and bands to a wider audience. Giving people a chance to hear bands that they maybe would've never heard before. Hey congrats on your sobriety. Also, I saw Avail w/ Act of Faith in the 90s, so this really brings back memories! I still miss Bow bopping around the stage contributing his occasional screams. Also, you mentioned Bouncing Souls on another episode. I lived in Richmond when they were a thing. Wish I'd seen 'em. I was lucky enough to the the Eskalators in Richmond though. This video got me kind of emotional actually.

They got mad love back in the day. Jimmy is a good dude funny as fuck. I have good memories of him both on and off stage. The early scene was small you'd see same 40/50 ppl at shows through the years whether was A7, CBGB matinee or Ritz shows. Things started changing late 80s early 90s. Some old school dudes left the scene when shit got stupid with newbie crews started ratpacking others and brandishing weapons in the pit. No one picked u back up or caught you when stagediving.The camaraderie was gone. Turned into high school hallway poser drama.

Think it’s a mistake to include Earth Crisis. Earth Crisis were from Central New York and did not come out of the NYC scene. They took influence from the Youth Crew scene, but also a lot of Thrash and Peace Punk. I remember Karl walking around Syracuse with huge liberty spikes, skating and listening to Slayer. I just don’t see them on a family tree with Sick of All, AF and so on.

You said a line about a 'sound' spreading pre-internet. It was all about the Postal service - Zines & tape trading was our internet. Even, as I was, living in England you were in touch with like minded Hardcore nuts all over the world. Most of my music at that time was from trading tapes or buying tapes, flexis, or 7 &12 inches directly from bands..

Youth Of Today are from Connecticut, Slapshot are from Boston and Helmet aren't even hardcore in the slightest.

Sworn Enemy is great just listened to them earlier. I discovered all that stuff in the late 90s/early 2000s

I saw Cro-Mags in Berkley in the mid-80s it was one of the best punk shows I ever went to...

FUCK earth crisis is my shit. so happy this channel exists and I discovered it

I was in my preteen/teen years during the late eighties and early nineties and I loved the hardcore scene and even though I was young and small I'd get in the action and the OGs would pick me up off the floor in the mosh pit, pat me on the back and it was all so much fun. The Boston and greater Massachusetts scene was small but loyal and super tight I felt like I was with family with many if those guys.

When you got into the 90s hardcore scene. It would be cool if you did something on screamo. Cause even tho, as documented online, it started in San Diego, and that is true. But for some reason bands like Saetia and angel hair and a few years later PG99 etc. But it’s cool that somehow such an extreme genre that is very much an acquired taste somehow blew up on one side of the country and spawned others on the other side without ever hearing one another for a few years. I don’t know how that happened. But would be interested

SOIA was the first punk band I fell in love with besides the Ramones. As a the diehard nu-metal kid I was a few years ago it was so different, so cool, so I hold them very close. Although many Though Hardcore guys despite H2O I really love them, IDK they make me feel like the happiest man on earth even if I had a bad day. Madball may not be my favorite one, but I really dig some of their stuff. There's a lot of band among the ones you talked about I didn't know, well I guess I've got some work to do, I'll surely dig the melodic stuff you talked about if they sound similar to H2O. Awesome video man.

Yeah definitely check out CIV and Lifetime if you fuck with H2O. Good Riddance and 88 Fingers as well. Tbh Shelter (the krishnacore band I mentioned) is another great melodic hardcore band too

My top 3 Reagan Youth,Beastie boys and Agnostic Front

Agnostic Front, Murphys Law, Cro-mags Warzone, Gorilla Biscuits and Crumbsuckers... You can't go wrong with these bands though Roger Merit From Agnostic Front can be an acquired taste, especially live, these days but I still love that voice of his, been a fan since 1985.

And again, zero mention of NJHC who gave everyone One4One, NJ Bloodline, Faction Zero, Distress, etc. Just to name a few...oh and IDK who could have been huge but Red got hired by PSE&G and still there, played on almost every hardcore show at The Pipeline & Studio 1 in Newark, Down Under in New Brunswick, Maxwell's in Hoboken and thousands of VFW halls. NJ shows in the early to semi later 1990's were so good and never got the recognition they deserved!

Oh yeah, this me lol My City does it like none other. I'm a little more Nausea than Cro-Mags in a lotta ways, but NYHC had such an influence on me. Coming from the hood, poor asl, raised on hip hop, soul, and a little reggae, being "mixed", etc, but getting into punk mad young, it just fit. Aggression, often political, gangs, gritty and real, street af, groovy riffs that most anybody can appreciate, it just had it all.

Please do more on Reagan Youth. They are my favorite band.

true story. earth crisis was syracuse ny. and honestly they werent even good. it was all about the tough guy mentality and overcompensating. if you are at all familiar with syracuse ny you would realize it was so foolish and silly these suburban kids could ever think they were actually tough, hence the overcompensating.

They used to have this gang of beatdown kids as "security" at their shows hanging out with baseball bats and brass knuckles threatening anyone they thought didn't "belong" there

Upstate hardcore is also an interesting topic mostly because no bands ever blew up. But the sounds is a hybrid of New England thrash and NY×HC. I grew up in the Albany area and you still see a resurrection of this weird hybrid every couple years.

gorilla biscuits -new direction,still to this day my favorite song from the new york hardcore scene ,not to mention raised fist made an aw(e)some cover,as well the seel stamp of nyhc warzone ,which are not mentioned enough now of days ,was fun ,one thing hardcore had that punk did not was,somekind of discipline ,at least keeping some muscle strenght

Yeah, contrasting youth crew with tough guy culture was a head-scratcher for me. The jock-like posturing and muscle head culture was huge with YOT and youth crew. I love YOT fwiw, but I also keep that scene at arm’s length for sure because it was full of macho nonsense. And puritanical moralizing. Lots to unpack there.
