This is one of the only times I have disagreed with Jirard. Crash Bandicoot was a good game when it came out... it was one of the must have platform games. The point about the bosses being too easy is countered by the fact the game isn't easy, it gets harder. I feel like had Jirard not played all these games out of sync then he may of had a different view on it. I recently platinumed Crash Bandicoot the remake and it was a pleasure to play again, all the collectibles (gems) gave the game good replay value.

A lot of points you made here were kind of funny to me. As a youngster, I loved the idea of completing games and in my teen years, I did complete a whole bunch of my Xbox 360 collection, but 1 of the few games I 100% completed as a kid was Crash 1. Maybe my opinion doesn't count, as I've never played Crash 2 or 3, a lot of the points you made against the game were things I loved! The cameras may SEEM awkward, but they showed you just enough information for you to play and didn't make it easy. I LIKE this. Give me a challenge. I don't need to control the camera like with many 3D games of the era (because let's be real; early 3D games had HORRIBLE camera control) and that makes my life easier, but it doesn't make the GAME easier. And beating each level in 1 run getting every box is such a fun challenge! It made you EARN your 100% completion. There were no tricks or cheats to get around it; you just had to get GOOD and that spoke to me so much. Crash 1 (along with Bomberman Hero & Banjo-Kazooie) were the games that made me want to 100% complete games in the first place! I'm not mad we share different opinions on the game, but I just wanted to share my thoughts on some of the flaws you found with it.

Over the past few days I've just properly played through Crash Bandicoot 1 for the first time (as a kid I'd gotten Warped first, which was the only one I finished, and only messed around a little with the first two games later), then finished getting all the gems for 100% completion, and as I got near the end I checked out this video to hear your thoughts. I agree with almost all of your comments, but I'm surprised you didn't complain more about the colored gems that unlock hidden paths in some levels, because they're one of my biggest complaints about the game in going for 100% completion. The idea of achievements in one level unlocking hidden areas in another isn't a bad one, but this implementation has major issues. First, the fact that boxes hidden in these areas prevent you from earning their level's gem if you're unable to access them (which, for most levels with them, WILL be the case the first time through, since most of the colored gems are clustered near the end of the game) means that you'll need to beat them once, then come back later to go for their gem; but if you know from the start you want to go for 100% completion, it would be most efficient to go for the gem right after beating the level the first time, while it's still fresh in your mind, so this wastes your time by forcing you to basically learn each level twice. Then there's the fact that this system is very poorly explained; there's no explanation in the game itself, and the instruction manual does say that gems can enable Crash to access new areas in previously completed stages, but it doesn't mention anything about differently colored gems, the first of which doesn't show up until the tenth level, and the white gems that are all you can collect until then and for most of the stages in the game don't work that way, only gating your access to the hidden ending. Also, nothing in the game or manual mentions that it will be impossible to earn the gem for some stages your first time through, so I was seriously confused when (naturally starting out trying to earn the gems as I went along) I kept trying to find the boxes I was missing in the second level until I looked online and figured out what was going on; now imagine how confounding that would have been when this game first came out and the internet wasn't much of a thing! There's also no indication from the map or other UI of what levels have hidden areas, and it can be easy to miss the tiny transparent gems that indicate places platforms will appear when you have the appropriate gem even IF you know the game works that way, much less if you don't; and it's immensely frustrating if, playing a level blind, you manage to get to the end without dying or missing a box, only to discover that you can't earn the gem because it has a hidden area you can't access yet. And even if you learn or figure out about how the colored gems work, there's no indication of which seemingly-random levels have them, so you're left guessing at random if you're not using a guide. And the content of the hidden areas accessed by the colored gems often leaves much to be desired; most of them just give access to a handful of extra lives, which isn't that big a deal in earlier stages you've already cleared, and while it's a lot more interesting for that ones that basically add on additional, more challenging areas to some of the early stages (essentially breathing new life and challenge into a previously-completed level), it still feels strange that it's easier to complete most of those areas than to earn the gems that were required to access them. I know I was basically just ranting into the ether a lot there and that it's likely no one will ever read this, but I felt the need to vent my feelings after internally griping about them the whole time I was going through this game. As much as I complain about all of this, I think it was probably a decision on the designers' part to try to extend the lifespan of the game by giving players reason to spend a lot of time exploring and mastering all of the levels, which was probably the same reason they made the gems so difficult to earn with the 1-life completionist requirement; and to be fair, trying to squeeze as much lifetime as you can out of your game's limited content wasn't necessarily a bad decision in those days, when games were often short and most people didn't have many in their libraries, so people wanted a lot of value (in terms of playtime) for their money. On the upside, I DO really like the actual completion bonus in this game; the whole Great Hall level basically exists just to hint at the significance of the gems and then to serve as a victory lap once you have them all, and an alternate ending, as simple as it was, felt like quite a satisfying reward, especially for its time.

2 and 3 hold up extremely well. 1 really is hard to get through, especially due to the horrific save system. Jirard didn't have much of an issue with it as he's kind of amazing at games, but you can get into 2 and 3 today and love them. Give them a go. I think the gem of the collection is Crash Team Racing. Still nearly unsurpassed as a kart racer, and really innovative in its progression system... wish more racing games had a Mario 64-like hub world with secrets!

Something I always found kinda interesting about both Crash and Spyro is that strangely Universal didn’t capitalize on them especially at their prime. Yeah Crash had short lived toy line and there were occasional McDonalds Promos but both seemed ripe for potential in other media, specifically cartoons and more so in Spyro’s case comics although a Crash Comic could probably work too.

I so agree with you, this game is pretty hard from the trilogy. I didn't get around to playing this game as a kid. I remember at the daycare center I went to as a kid, they had the game but I sucked at it, never got past the third level. I went back to play it on Emulator a few years ago and just couldn't get used to the D-Pad to control Crash. I was too used to Crash 2, 3, and the others so it took a long while to adjust to it. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the remakes of the first three games, hopefully they'll be awesome! Nice review! As for the question of the video, if I were a new console, I think I'd choose Ratchet & Clank or Jak & Daxter as the icon as they symbolize all the fun a game can have. They both have platforming, they both have shooting, they both have exploration (more-so Jak), and hack wacky characters. All you could ever love in a video game. :)

It's literally just Crash Bandicoot 2 but with more variety to the levels, and, in my humble opinion, somewhat tighter level design (though for the most part it's very comparable if a little derivative). Definitely not 'trash'! And it's VERY Crash. Probably the most bonkers of the lot to be honest, and Crash is all about the crazy.

Crash 3 isn't that bad, but the level variety can be a pain in the ass, especially the jetski and airplane levels. It's not a bad game on it's own, but if you decide to go after 105%, then it becomes a whole different thing.

Love the review as always! I must say, it did make me think how I've thought you understate the difficulty of certain games, but in this I would have to say I think you're entirely overstating the difficulty. The Crash games are on my year or two rotation of games that I always go back to so maybe I'm desensitised to completing it by now (or something) and I concede it's the toughest of the 3. But those gem runs just take a bit of learning the levels, once you can do it you'll do it every time. I do find the playtime / deathcount ratio to be a little odd in your stats too but I'm just being pedantic haha,. :P Keep 'em comin' man!
