Sonic Unleashed | The Completionist

Ойындар

The Sonic the Hedgehog fandom are at odds with many games in the franchise, but Sonic Unleashed tends to be a major split. Differences in opinion for innovative or destructive run deep and passionate. It's time for my take on this game in this week's Completionist episode for my Sonic Unleashed review!
Sonic Unleashed created a major divide among fans. Was it innovative or did it continue to "ruin Sonic"? The new direction for mechanics and play-style, along with a custom engine built for this Sonic game were great ideas to move the franchise forward after the previous game, but did it end up making sense? To me the Werehog idea doesn't. So Sonic the Hedgehog is a Hedgehog that turns into a...hedgehog? Other than that the story has high stakes and is a great tone, but possibly unbalanced with the constant cartoony antics of CHIP. If you played the game, then you will know my frustrations with Chip. Let's see how it all adds up in my Sonic Unleashed review!

    I remember doing the Eggman chilli dogs back when the game released. It was a bit of a nightmare. The biggest issue being, if you beat the best time first go...you still have to keep doing it for the hotdogs regardless. If you do the level without dying, you're likely gonna have beaten the target time for the third chillidog anyway. That was my biggest beef with the game. I think doing it just once would be enough

    Not really, honestly this was allways one of my biggest problem with the adventure games. Such a cartoonic looking oversized hedgehog being surrended "realistic" looking humans, it's such a clash of totally different styles, it just didn't made any sense to me. It feelt like Sonic was in an alternate reality without any explanation (Sonic X does not count as an explanation, cause the show was made long after the game). Specially if you have such a goofy looking cahracter like Eggman around, who is supposed to be human. The Pixar-ish style of unleashed fits way better with the cartoonish style of Sonic, Eggman and co. like they are actually part of this world. One critice I can give adventure and unleashed, that appearently Sonic and his friends seems to be the only anthromorphic beings on the whole world, thought once again, it is more noticeable in adventure cause of the weird style.

    toongrowner1 Are you seriously making such a big fucking scene ? Jesus Christ. Humans in the Adventure games barely had any major role, and they were designed in such a way that they didn't clash, because they weren't full on realistic like 06. Go watch SA2, the scenes with Shadow and Maria. She doesn't look out of place next to him. Hell, you even get stereotypical long-nosed Arabs that almost look like they come from Unleashed. Seriously, what kind of mental gymnastics are you doing to say tHeY LoOk lIkE ThEy fRoM aNoThEr DiMeNsIoN ? Nobody ever thought of that dumb shit until Sonic X I agree that it was annoying to have such a small cast of *ANTHROPOMORPHIC* characters (seriously, you can't even spell that word ?).

    I loved this game a lot as a kid but I played it on the Wii. There they streamlined interactions with chip and the townspeople, and made it easier to play as the werehog. They also removed extra collectables and changed how the sun/moon medals work. I loved it and I think it's better than on whatever console you played it on. Also as a kid Eggmanland was hard as heck out of nowhere, but that made it extremely gratifying to improve and beat after some time. I actually gave up on trying at one point and came back, and when I finally beat the game it was awesome.

  • @infamousplayer8772

    You wanna know what the explanation is? Fine. Prepare yourself, this nerd train is not stopping now. *Inhale* Sonic got exposed to tons of Dark Gaia's energy, which caused him to, unlike the rest of the people who are just suffering the effects of it at night, turn into the Werehog, but since he received such massive amounts of dark energy, he was affected way more drastically. But, as Chip explained, since Sonic is way too strong to lose himself, he obviously wasn't affected by Dark Gaia's influence. Before you try to tell me that's bullshit, remember that this is the same guy whose first Chaos Control was made with a fake Chaos Emerald. Not convinced? Let's look at this from another angle then. *Inhale* We know that the Chaos Emeralds have massive amounts of both positive and negative energy, and as we saw in Adventure 1, Sonic draws out the positive energy of the Emeralds to go Super. So, as Eggman traps Sonic and uses the Emeralds to release Dark Gaia, it's safe to assume that he used the negative energy from the Emeralds to achieve that, and considering Sonic was so close to them while that was happening, he obviously got affected by said negative energy as well, turning into the Werehog. That would make sense considering the Emeralds have some kind of connection to the Light Gaia temples, so I would assume that it could also have a connection to Dark Gaia, considering they were needed to awaken it. So you could see the Werehog as the opposite of Sonic's Super Form. There you go. I expect my money in three days, tops.

    Except it's nothing like a super form because it's based on the time of day, isn't powered by rings, and is no where near as powerful. And no one can explain why it gives him ridiculous new shoes and grows his gloves back. Dark Gaia has a very strong fashion sense or something? And it not changing his personality is a huge cop out. That would have made the Werehog _way_ more interesting. But no, he's the same I guess. That fucking sucks. If he was evil Sonic that would have been way better, hell _anything_ could have been better than what they went with. The explanation that Sonic is too nice or whatever is lame. Sonic struggling with becoming an asshole would have provided some actually interesting cutscenes, like they did a whole thing about Dark Gaia turning people bad or something yet we never really get anything cool out of it. Maybe it could have affected Amy? Tails? Professor Pickle?? At least Sonic, seeing as he turns into a literal horror movie monster at night time! But fuck that, we wouldn't want the games mechanics to be relevant to the story or anything! It's just more proof that the Werehog as a concept was a shallow, last minute decision that was slapped in with no real thought or substance. It was a blatant shark jump to turn heads and capitalize on current popular media, the lowest form of new mechanic. The gimmickiest of gimmicks imaginable. The form just vanishes in the end and is never mentioned, it has zero pay off. Dark Gaia just slurps it up and that's it for the Werehog. What a waste of fucking time. It had zero impact, zero explanation (your fan theory explanation doesn't count) and zero payoff. Pointless. I specifically remember that when this game came out and I first beat it that I thought it would have been cooler if the Werehog did impact Sonic's personality. I always hated that lame cop out they did. And I had this idea that at the end when Dark Gaia gets rid of the Werehog form it becomes a separate entity and has to be beaten in a boss fight, as Dark Gais's last ditch effort to get rid of Sonic. All of the stats you upgraded with the Werehog would be pitted against you. The bosses difficulty is based on how much you upgraded, therefore used, the form. As if giving into the violence of the evil form gives it more influence and in the end more power or something. It was just an idea from over a decade ago, but thinking back, anything like that could have made it so much more interesting and memorable instead of the lame, shallow, irrelevant gimmick that it was.

    As much as I love Unleashed, as it's my favorite Sonic game, I will admit it's not for everyone. If you want a game that's more "sit down and play" and less frustrating and more like a traditional Sonic game then I would recommend Generations. Me being a Sonic veteran, I can see passed this game's flaws for the phenomenal video game it really is. You just have to give it a chance. I love the difficulty, I love that they tried something different, I love the story, I love everything about it.

    I get that it is subjective but you cant't get more wrong about this. They ps2 version is obviously inferior in almost every way. The only better thing I can find about it is the way they split the werehog levels but that is still a subjective topic to talk about.

  • @yugijak

    @yugijak

    6 жыл бұрын

    tasos akoumianakis I also must disagree. The PS2 version did not make you hunt down the medals, instead awarding them to you for completing levels and challenges There are no "hot dog" missions. You get hubworld puzzles for extra lives and some of the extras The boss keys are distinctly labelled so you KNOW if you can access the boss of a specific continent or not You don't get anywhere near as many glitches (at least in my experience) Instead of a stat system the werehog levels simply accrue experience in the form of Dark Gaia energy, which unlocks things as you play through the game at a rate that doesn't make you grind for them. Enemies that require QTEs to finish are almost non-existent (almost exclusively the bosses), instead of being somewhat uncommon. You don't have any pointless items to buy at the stores, instead you can just get more of the extras. At least to me it kept pace and was a very thoroughly enjoyable game with no bugs in the PS2, and often seems like it was more of a finished product.

  • @tasosakoumianakis431

    @tasosakoumianakis431

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yep this is all subjective and I respect your opinion but all of these things you wrote down I thing make the game inferior. First of all, I enjoyed hunting down medals as i enjoy exploring, especially the werehog stages, hot dog missions are optional and are bonus content for when you finish the game thus giving you more hours to play. I personally didn't find any glitches in the hd version and I believe enemies with qte finishes despite being optional are a fun challenge that if you get right it rewards you. The stat system is awesome because it gives you the option to upgrade what you want, enhancing your experience and the store items are also optional. The ps2 version also misses hub worlds that imo sonic unleashed hd got them absolutely right if not perfect, the controls are a lot better, the level design is in every way superior and the combat is 100 times more engaging and fun. I believe that the final boss and the graphics are too obvious to be mentioned. But as I said many times now it is entirely subjective.

  • @OneTrueNobody
    @OneTrueNobody6 жыл бұрын

    The PS3 version is a technical oddity. It plays at an uncapped framerate, actually: it can get as high as 60 frames per second when it's running well, but that just makes the frequent framerate dips more obvious and more off-putting. The Xbox 360 version of the game is capped at 30 frames per second, which makes it a much smoother and more consistent experience. It will still chug when there are too many enemies in a Werehog level or when you're going through the fountain area in the Empire City hub or when there's too much vegetation in the Adabat Day Stage... but for the most part it feels smoother. A good lesson as to why developers usually pick a frame rate for the game to stay at and lock it in.

    Yeah, I can agree with that, Lewis. As an owner of the Xbox 360 version, the frame rate is smooth sailing for the bulk of the game, but sometimes has its slow moments. As much as that’s not a dealbreaker for me, the fact that I was originally oblivious to the PS3 version makes me all the more lucky to have gotten a more decent version of the game in terms of performance.

  • @OneTrueNobody

    @OneTrueNobody

    6 жыл бұрын

    The hardware was fine. The PS3 is in fact capable of quite a bit; it's the architecture that was the problem. It was a bit of a complication when it came to making a game for the Xbox 360 or PC first and then porting it to the PS3, so most games developed for the PlayStation 3 from the get-go prove better on a technical level than the games ported to the system after development. Problems arise when you consider that the Xbox 360 was "the" popular system for most of the PlayStation 3's lifespan, with the system only gaining in momentum later on that generation. Publishers were strongly inclined to prioritize the Xbox 360 versions, which meant they more or less hamstrung their ability to create good PS3 versions to go with them. Bethesda was a constant culprit of this, and obnoxiously tried to blame it on the hardware when the truth was they were just incompetent at working with it.

    Okay, as Fawful's Minion explained in his Top 10 Sonic Games video from a poll he did, since Sonic was still connected to the Emeralds when Eggman fired the cannon, some of Dark Gaia's energy traveled back up the beam and got absorbed into his body, pretty much giving him a Super Saiyan 4 form but since the energy works at night, that's why it happens. Also, it makes the werehog form connected to the entire plot of the game

    I'd say Unleashed is one hell of a rough diamond, kind of like the Stalker series (not quite the same way but you get the idea). Personally I love the game to death despite all of its many flaws, and I feel like it gets too much hate from people who haven't even played the game. And one more thing about the Wherehog; I like to look at it as a metaphor for Sonic's tarnished reputation with 06. When he turns into the Wherehog, Sonic is like a hideous beast, an abomination (for lack of a better word) of nature, where none of his friends recognize him, and everyone else is scared half to death when they see him for the first time. It's like Sonic hit rock-bottom like a drug addict and is struggling to better himself. Hell, the main theme "Endless Possibility" seems to allude to Sonic bouncung back from failure in its lyrics. I know half of you will mock me for looking that deeply into the themes of a Sonic game, so go ahead, I really don't care if you're not going to add to a discussion.

    Actually, the Wii/ps2 version might be worth some peoples time. The graphics are downscaled but the game runs much smoother I never once encountered a framerate dip even in Adabat. I honstly think that it looks better than the ps3/360 in some cases. On top of that, the gameplay is much more streamlined as in mission-based, you talk to the NPCs for about 5 minutes then go to the temple and complete the stages. The day stages are broken up into 2-3 acts which take 3-5 minutes while the Werehog is done the same way except that could take up to 10 minutes for a first playthrough. You also never have to hunt for medals or collectibles, they're automatically awarded to you based on rank, extras are hidden in option offshoots of the temples. Still, fuck Eggmanland though you have a regular day stage which emphasis not using the boost, but Sonic's top speed. Then after that, there's a time trial of 2:45, then a don't get hit. Finally 6 stages of Werehog

    Spoilers for the end of the game, but before you face Dark Gaia it is shown that the reason Sonic transformed into the werehog every night was because some of Dark Gaia's energy had seeped its way into his body at the beginning of the game. There! There's the reason why the werehog exists in the game! Also, you said Chip is crucial to the plot, but then go on to say that Chip could have been replaced by Tails and it would have been an improvement. Not necessarily, since Chip actually fights Dark Gaia in his own giant stone mecha in the final battle, while in turn, also tying in to the game's theme of light vs darkness and the balancing act of those two sides. I don't see Tails being able to accomplish either of those two things. Aside from that though, this was a well constructed review, so keep up the amazing work. I'm definitely subscribing. X3

    Let me try to explain the Werehog in a simple way. When dark gaia was Unleashed via use of the Chaos Emeralds which are part of the process to defeat Dark Gaia, a side effect happened (not exactly sure on the reason or why yet but it could be in relation to Sonic and the Chaos Emeralds since he uses them and the power was drained from the Emeralds and Sonic uses the power of Dark Gaia in his Werehog form). Since Dark Gaia is most fond of the Darkness and the Night, which is when his shattered pieces known as the Dark Gaia Minions and two of the night bosses (Dark Gaia Phoinex doesn't count since it was possessed by Dark Gaia's influence. This also explains why some people in the towns act differently and you have to defeat the Dark Gaia Minions controlling them) started to cause madness around the shattered world. Dark Gaia split up because of the early awakening and Chip forgot who he was. Then at the end of the game, Dark Gaia had a physical form now due to the Dark Gaia Furnace Eggman had to fuse all the power from the Minions that he gathered and it revived Dark Gaia to his more neutral phase. However, there was still a bit of Dark Gaia energy left which was in Sonic. When Dark Gaia did an evil glare to Sonic, it lured out all the Dark Gaia Energy Sonic had back to Dark Gaia and gave him that last bit of power he needed. It would only be a matter of time before he would grow stronger and become Perfect Dark Gaia who can spread tye influence at will without actually splitting apart and would consume the planet in an eternal night so all living things will eternally be controlled by Dark Gaia since he can't really control them in the day, but is still noticable. But with the Chaos Emeralds in each of the seven temples, Chip, or Light Gaia, will take on his true form and will always take out Dark Gaia and return him to his slumber at the planet's core and same goes for Light Gaia and will awaken again in the next Eon.

    This is honestly my second favorite 3D Sonic game (number 1 being Sonic Generations.).Even though Eggmanland is a massive pain in the ass, I enjoyed pretty much every level beside that one. I love the world building. I like the bond that Sonic and Chip have and how Sonic puts on Chip's ring as a memory of him. I love the music and art style of the game. I enjoy the werehog even if it doesn't make sense. I just wish that these few things happened: 1. Not having to collect Sun and Moon levels. 2. Eggmanland. Just fuck that stage entirely. 3. There were more unlockables like maybe Super Sonic or alternate playable characters for the daytime stages. 4. The framerate was at a solid 30 instead of trying very hard to reach 60 (or port it to be at 60 fps on PS4, Xbox One and PC).

    Sonic Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game by far; it's almost intoxicating to play, if you're on XBox at least. Most people don't want to give it a chance simply BECAUSE of the weirdness that is the concept of the Werehog. The levels are a fun change of pace, and it's refreshing to see something new in the Sonic series, which is exactly what this game brought to the table. Most of those complaints that you brought up are completely valid; The homing attack feels clunky at times, and Sonic has a tendency to launch himself into the distance if they're not timed properly. The Werehog, although fun to play in battle sequences, can feel stiff and awkward to control during the platforming segments. And Eggmanland... don't even get me started. Eggmanland is the single most frustrating video game level I've ever played in my entire 25 years alive. I'm surprised you didn't touch on the final boss, which I find to be the cheapest, and most difficult to fight in any Sonic game I've played. I still haven't beaten it, and I played through that game two whole years ago! That being said, this game has so much good going for it, and I'm glad you were able to point out most of it as well. The music in my opinion, is the best in the series, by far. Every single track in this game is a treat to just sit down and listen to. I found myself idling in the cities more often than not, to be honest. And during the daytime stages, the speed at which Sonic moves is borderline exhilarating; you won't find a Sonic game in which you can run faster than in this game. I find the problem with this game, and WHY it has fans so split, is because 1. they tried something new and a lot of Sonic fans refuse to give new concepts a chance, in favor of holding onto the past, and 2. The Wii and PS3 versions were such incredible hot piles of steaming garbage that it tore apart the reputation of the game as a whole. And hey; if you're reading this comment still and you haven't played this game, I'd wholeheartedly suggest you give the XBox 360 version a try.

    I’ve played and beaten both the ps2 and ps3 versions of Unleashed, multiple times. And I absolutely LOVE Chip. He is probably my favorite video game character of all time. Cmon. He is literally such a funny and nice character. He is so innocent and is in love with food! He loves people of all kind, and is always so eager to see new things! Before he remembers he’s Light Gaia, he was basically like a child experiencing the world for the first time due to his amnesia. His childlike innocence is probably what made him such a lovable character to me personally. I can tell you that the first time I beat Unleashed when Sonic was thrown to the surface by Chip and once again landed face first in the outskirts of Apotos, only this time during the day, and when he saw Chip, only for Chip to fade away and leave his amulet for Sonic to collect, I seriously bawled my eyes out because I had grown so attached to Chip being there with me throughout the entire game. It was almost like Rose telling Jack to come back, lol. I don’t understand why you hate Chip so much, I’m pretty sure a lot of unleashed fans might agree with me. Or who knows, maybe it’s an unpopular opinion? 🤷‍♂️

So my favorite games always were the Adventure ones because there was a big story that tied the levels together (althought it wasn't very good, I didn't understand English at that time so I just figured out what was happening on my own) and chao to get replayability.

    I get that it's your opinion, but I personally feel it's kinda unfair to criticize the game for having actual difficulty near the end of it. You say that Eggmanland and the ending alone makes it "not worth finishing" but in my opinion it makes the ending a lot more satisfying and exciting. Nowadays Sonic games' endings are so predictable, so easy, and unsatisfying. This is the only Sonic game I ever played that made my heart beat and made you work for the ending. I get what you mean by Chip and the Werehog being unnecessary, but I mean you can't knock the game for trying to do something different. If they weren't here, I would even argue the game wouldn't be the same. And lastly, I'm sorry, but, what glitches? I've played this game for years and it's without a doubt the most polished Sonic game since SA2. Sometimes I will agree the game can screw you over (the tower in Rooftop Run Night, the roller coaster section in Eggmanland) but other than that, what can you really say about the game being unfair? I'll give you the point about how you get nothing for 100%ing it. That's probably why I haven't done so yet, because I wasn't sure if you even get anything, but now I know. Pretty disappointing. Sonic Unleashed is not the best Sonic game, but it sure as hell is my favorite. Does that make me biased?... well, yes. But still, I thought some of your points were questionable. I miss when Sonic games actually had difficulty and surprises. Unleashed has that, and more.

    Chicken Little was a GOOD Movie Maybe it's due to the fact that going fast in the day sections feels like a punishment as there are tons of times where obstacles you never see coming on the first playthrough can easily screw you over, and it can clash with the concept of the day stages. It makes you want to go slow, when the entire game (for daytime stages) was all about going fast. It feels awkward, not to mention the stage is long. So getting a game over means you have to do everything from the beginning. To some, that could be the line that may be crossed. Also, maybe it's just me, but I never found any Sonic game I've played yet to be "hard".

    Daniel Martin To me, the day stages are pretty annoying to play the first time around, and I just go through them slowly for the reasons you mentioned, *BUT,* once I am familiar with the layouts and the alternate paths, they become super exhilarating to zoom through, faster and more spectacularly each time.

    I am facepalming so fucking hard at your whole comment. Gens for the Xbox 360: Story: Nobody cares about the fucking story in a Sonic game except Sonic-Nerds and the whole fucking point of the story was to be an anniversary to Sonic so of Crisis City is there and of course Sonic is fighting Shadow in the same setting as their original fight. And it isn't like the story in Unleashed was any better (if the world broke apart, why isn't everybody dead? How did Sonic not die from the fall? I'm using your same logic for these points btw) Writing: Nobody cares about the story in a Sonic game except Sonic-Nerds. The story isn't a focus nor does it take up much time so why does it matter? Voice Acting: I guess so. Graphics: Necessary graphical changes were made so the game ran at a steady frame-rate. Gameplay: Better in every single way imaginable and that's a fact. The levels had MANY paths and mistakes made didn't kill you (unlike Unleashed) but they gave you a shorter path, lowering your time. The game is made for speed running levels and I shouldn't have to explain why that's good for a Sonic game. Longevity: There are many challenges and the excellent levels are infinitely re-playable for their multiple different paths and for your personal attempts to get a better time. And OF FUCKING COURSE Unleashed is longer because the Werehog's slow and tedious gameplay. Cutscenes: Nobody cares about the story in a Sonic game except Sonic-Nerds. The story isn't a focus nor does it take up much time so why does it matter? Level Themes: Excellent remixes for the levels. And of course it is unoriginal. You're just one of two things. 1. Simply blinded by nostalgia for your favorite game. 2. Just a dumbass who has no grasp of what makes a game good.
