Crankshaft Sensor and Trigger Wheel - Land Rover Discovery - Fault P0336 / S4-Ep50
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this episode, we repair a defect crankshaft position sensor and trigger wheel on a 2009 Land Rover Discovery 3 with a 2.7L TDV6 engine. The vehicle runs only in limp mode and throws a P0336-66 fault code.
Also check out his video with a similar repair.
• No Engine Start after ...
Technical data:
Trigger wheel and sensor install of 2.7L TDV6 and 3.0L SDV6 engine:
Offset of trigger wheel from dowel location to trigger wheel hole is 110.5° CW when viewed in driving direction from back side of engine.
Insertion dept of the trigger wheel is 3.66 mm +-0.4 mm with max axial TIR of 0.4 mm, measured from the shoulder of the crank to the trigger wheel.
The sensor gap is 0.4 mm to 1.5 mm max.
The trigger wheel delivers 60 - 2 tooth pattern. The missing theeth represent 12° of crankshaft rotation. The reference point is 21° BTDC.
See our Patreon Page for a screen shot of the correct shape of the trigger wheel signal.
Note that the crankshaft sensor uses a 5V supply and ground and provides a output signal connected to a 4.7 k Ohm pull up resistor inside the ECU. If measured in a test setup without the pull up resistor, the output voltage is less and looks wrong. Install a 4.7K Ohm resistor to see the correct output.
Connect the scope to the wiring harness above the LH ECR Valve to get the crankshaft sensor signal:
Ground = Brown with red tracer
Signal = White with red tracer
+5V = Yellow with red tracer
Note that some color combinations are present multiple times in the harness.
ECU will only trigger a fault once the engine starts. No-start no-fault. Engine must also read the cam shaft sensor and will take one crankshaft revolution to sync. If no cam shaft signal is present or faulty, engine will remain in limp mode with reduced power and fault will be logged by the ECU.
Part number of trigger wheel: LR005254 (Price at LR in 10-2023 was 156 Euro)
Part Number Bosch Sensor: BOSCH 0986280437

Tell me about it. That car would have been at the dealership for months with thousands of dollars wasted in diagnostic time.
Australian here. Just love the personality and no BS approach. I’ve been a mechanic by trade for nearly 10 years, not often I will click on a JLR video and enjoy it!
The 1500 RAM 3 liter ECO Diesel has the same problem and Fait has a recall on that issue. Instead of replacing the trigger wheel they reprogram the ECU to not need the trigger wheel and instead it only uses the camshaft sensors.
Ahh, my favourite Sunday morning viewing, thanks to you both.
Hope Land Rover and Brit Parts are watching, awesome. Power to the people👍🇬🇧🏴

god bless you guys- this diagnosis is insane given the level of electrical complexity.
That tip, about putting lube on the connector so it will slide into the connector, is an excellent one. I've used that same procedure for years. As an auto tech, I've worked with multiple dozens of mechanics and you're the only other person I've ever seen use this step. You guys do great work. Thanks for the videos. Thumbs up!
It's busted, OMG! What a debacle! Love it!
Well, if I ever have enough of my Toyota LC's (not likely at all 😂) and buy a disco(Also not likely at all, I used to own Land Rovers!) I'll come over from Australia and have it serviced and fixed by you two people. Bloody brilliant diagnoses and proper fix. Obviously, lots of knowledge garnered. Hope he has no more problems for a long time.(also Unlikely but there has to be hope😊.) Seriously though great job.
Just to correct Vera, you dont need all those specialist tools and lathes and milling machines, in Fabian's case he just needs you guys 😄👍great job and so good to see and hear Fabian's engine sounding so good too. Have a great Christmas guys🎄
If you drill some holes in your crankshaft reluctor wheel fitting tool you could use flywheel bolts with spacer or similar to pull the crank sensor reluctor into position. Holes would be slightly bigger of course to allow for adjustment. You know this job now and so do we thank you. Nice to know you have a talking workshop manual now😀. Great teamwork.
You might as well open a LR repair shop at this stage!

Excellent work - Christian and Vera .
Love the German accent, it adds a sense of precision engineering that would otherwise be unheard of in a Land Rover.
Another great video Christian. Pleasure to watch.
Knowledge is key and you have it in abundance. Great video yet again
I had a disco 3 from new and did 160000 miles on the clock. Appart from from the normal front suspension issues, ushes etc,I only had to change the battery and aldnater at 90000.perhaps I'm just lucky.

Another brilliant video great work guys
This happens on some BMW petrol engines too with manual gearboxes, caused by excessive endfloat on the crankshaft even with a genuine trigger wheels after designers decided only half a typical thrust bearing is required. This wore prematurely causing endfloat which allowed the trigger wheel to hit the rear cover at speed when changing gear, breaking off pieces like in this video - an expensive recall for BMW.
Thank you - I now know exactly why I chose a 50 year old Triumph Stag as my “fun” car
Great job never a doubt you got it in one ,just love watching you guys

Used to watch you channel from time to time simply because how you guys get stuck in and take on anything. In the last week I bought an L494 Autobiography so will be watching your channel even more now!
Merry Christmas Christian Vera & family. I watch this channel because it inspires me to keep hanging on to my D3. When it is running it is a great car, I have not found a better replacement that ticks all the boxes. This year I renewed my CPS when I changed my clutch. I would not have thought about doing it if it was not for your no nonsense practical approach to engineering. Best wishes from Soest DE
All i can say your knowledge and expertise and capabilities are " tops " . The intelligent approach to the repairs - " wow " . Yet again another job " done and dusted " . Yes having the lathe ( to make " special tools " ) , ext make it easier , but " tools " do not make a " good " mechanic / technician or repair . Every detail , cleanliness ect ect and SPECIFICATIONS - and attention to detail - even storing parts , nuts and bolts whilst " stripping " LEAVING NOTHING TO CHANCE . Above comments ARE NOT just for most recent vidio Fabian you are one lucky fellow

Another excellent video great fault finding and repair. It always intrigues me how you can have 2 identical cars and similar miles and condition and yet they somehow drive very differently I've driven quite a few v6 Rover 75s and its very strange how some seemingly feel like they have considerably more power than others

My old Freelander 1 was just in yesterday for a new starter motor. He also still gets special treatment from us. Unfortunately, the Freelander 2 is too small for my needs right now, and the insurance and tax is the same as for a Discovery here in Germany. That is also why we sold the Freelander, and nobody watched our Freelander content unfortunately. 👍🙋♀️
Superb video!
Fantastic!!
This channel is so much better than the Toyota Oil Changes channel.

Great video - I always look forward to seeing your updates each Sunday... they just get better and better. I have had Land Rovers for a long time now - currently a 'Princess' as a 'Queen' must be an Autobiography and being a cheap guy, I have a Vogue SE. However, my wife collects her new Discovery Sport tomorrow - another Land Rover in our household. I only hope we have some reliability as I cannot imagine my wife underneath a car!
