That makes sense in Central Texas where 80%+ of our framers are Spanish speakers.

Good idea but you need to be using a spreader beam to grab the trusses ends and centre along the ridge, that'll stop all your blocking from going loose and extending your set out, did you notice the trusses were walking away from their marks ? Either that or pull the trusses together with load straps or temp timber straps at the ends till you land them.

I love competent people. I love individuals who know how to work in a team. I love a working boss. You guys rock. No other way to say it better.

It's true. If the boss is working you'll all get work done faster. It's important for them not to get fatigued so they can be good leaders too though. There should be a good balance

Putting two blocks at the end of the truss was a smart idea. Good job Matt great video as always.

Most of my friends all built tree houses. Jimmy's dad thought out of the box. They built the tree house on the ground and with a long pole attached to a loader bucket they "crained" the tree house into the tree and nailed it in. Probably spent $500 on the whole thing. That was a ton of money in 1964. This reminds me of that only on an epic larger level with real classy engineering and skilled labor. This is very cool to watch. It is about time to make job sites safer and more efficient.

If ya have the room you can build a lot of that on the deck before the walls and store it in the back lot. Decks are good to do that way also and dormers. With a crane you sheet the roof on the deck! Once you realize how much you can do because of the fork lift you'll never "stick" frame again. I never did anyway. build the house the same way you build something in a metal shop.

Hi there. In 2007-2008 I built 36 houses in SoCal, assembling the entire roof structure on the ground (on jigs with saddles for each truss). We decked and everything (even installed a wiring harness in the attic space ready with drops). I owned an all terrain crane and we lifted the roofs up and set them right on. It was fun to see you working on the same. I have countless pics of our operation. If you're interested, I can get some to you. Nice work.

In the crane biz myself, my ranch two car garage roof was all built on the ground, including the tin roof, everything except the ridge cap.

Years ago their was a Company in Northern Virginia that was framing on site all the walls 2 nd floor decking & joist in components and a whole roof that was 32 x44 decked with facia . I never saw the inside of the roof it had to have some kind of spreader bar .

I used to layout the catwalks and lateral braseing when the trusses were banded together on ground. It was no thinking about it later and fast putting in the bracing .

I wish I can share a photo the carpenters here in Michigan have started to phase out the use of any tractor and buy older cranes that can move a load anywhere on the site from the driveway.

Its fun, flying roofs Do it all the time!

One time we set up a gable *29ft? That had a desk roof so it was two roofs took us about 2 hours with 3 guys.

We're moving toward a construction labor market more like Europe. Use equipment to replace labor whenever you can. You're looking at a long career ahead of you, buy all the equipment you can. I'd get a couple extendable booms that work of skids, rent the skid or use one on site. They're getting bigger and longer all the time. Move to the telehandler then a crane when you can. Cranes inspections run out and most companies sell boom trucks rather than get them recertified. I've seen 20 ton boom trucks sell for under $5000 at local commercial auction companies and Ritchie Brothers always has some for sale somewhere. Check your use and only have the company owners use the uncertified crane, driving or setting.

How rewarding it is when you try a technique and it works the first time. I imagine that it was not easy with the search for the point of balance of the load during the lifting or its weight. Anyway, well done guys.

That's how all trusses are done in Ottawa. Almost all of it is built on the ground and boomed up, it's safer and easier. They pay a very expensive crane service, minimum 500 for it to come out for 4 hours I think so usally they'll put up 2 whole roofs one after the other in the subdivions and then sheat them the next day. We also don't put that blocking at the end between the trusses. To keep em from moving or flexing you simply nail a 1x3 to the top at the ends and remove it before sheating.

When you hit a wall you can go left, right or turn around.It's nice use'n your own equipment to save the day (and coin).Looks like every-1 gets beverage at the end of this day.

Do y'all use tag lines when flying trusses in to keep the spinning down to a minimum? Keep up the awesome work, your videos are educational, informative and inspiring !!!

Hey Matt, watching your video brought back memories for me. I'm 60 yrs old and i was pre fabbing like that 20 yrs ago. saved a lot of time. If building was getting vinyl I would put rough sawn trim on gables bumped out by a double row of strapping so vinyl would slid under rough sawn rake board. We developed so many ways to save time as well as make the job site a safer place

Matt, on a house like that the garage will likely have an epoxy floor with colored flakes and a clear coat. Or mine would if I could afford a house like that. So pins wouldn’t matter. But I get your point.

Out here concrete floors are very common, they grind it down a tad and clear it.

Matt, I like the pre-fabing the trusses on the ground. It's instant gratification when you set a bunch. Nice work. You mentioned having young kids on the crew speaking of the 30-something year old guy, you don't look any more than 25. You must be the baby on the crew.

Why are the trusses extensions crosses going away from supports instead of towards supports?

Your Camo Zip hoodie, what brand is that?

The only thing I'd do differently is drop a pair of 2x6 or 8 on the ground and set the ends of the trusses on them, rather than on the dirt. Ensures your trusses are sitting more or less in plane and gives a positive location for the blocking, flush with the bottom of each truss

I was on a job and the superintendent used red spray paint to mark puch out items on the nice polished garage floor the next day we had a new superintendent

If I miss mark with a sharpie I just put a squiggle thru the wrong line. Sometimes you can use a paper towel wet with rubbing alcohol to erase or render the bad line a lot fainter.

like the idea, work that boom lift as much as you can make it earn its keep, did this with doghouse and deck dormers on apartments, sticked ,sheeted, barged, facia,.. sure is easier, with apartments you always have a nice flat slab in front of you so you can lay it out with chalk lines and send it up all squared up and flat.. on your valley plywood cuts use the beam saw and cut stacks, everything is always the same, git er dunn... 8 @ 16' x 4' in about 2 hours a carp and 1 labor... we were insane back then, 70's, 80's 90', 8 1458ft 3bd 2 bath 3 story buildings two 5 man carp crew w/2 labs. 10-12 days pre punch list, a day on punch, DONE! about $28k every 2 weeks.. what were there 88 buildings and like a 8000sf cabana was it.. best job I was ever on cuz the money was so good, however the state takes 8% feds got like 30... still good money.. same general who built Gates home, Sue development... sure helps speed things up, you guys look like you have a nice system hope your making real money..

Yes it is hard to fined help that wants to learn a trade and work in the same person

That's cool but I'm not sure if it would really save any time compared to just setting the trusses with the sky track. Also, toe nailing into the ends of those blocks between the tails doesn't make sense to me when a full length sub fascia could be nailed on the ends of the tails. I really like the idea of putting the osb on the gables before they go up.

Jason, no sub-fascia on this build. Just finished edge with sheathing. Wasn't too worried about time-saving, more or less not wrestling trusses around, so we tried a new method of building on the ground. If it didn't save time, it definitely kept us safer.

I think you should pre-fab all of your trusses. You are more than capable and professional enough. Just my opinion.

Trusses companies have a 1 1/2" tolerance. So they won't do anything if it's off by that much, that isn't a company to even start business with.

Well done. Love how you just rolled with the changes and adapted to the situation. Pre fabing on the ground is a great time to teach someone who isn’t quit there yet in the air. I remember my first time flying trusses and trying to focus on the task at hand. A simple job of blocking got 20x harder lol Man hours to crane hours, what were the costs differences being able to pre fab and fly with the lift?

I’d like to think it was cheaper on the sections we flew in. Likely what I’ll do from here on out.

Someday it'll be a matter of a throne and an Amazon order to just set that roof on there. But until then you'll do.

Trussed Rooves need SIGNS in front for Fire Department not to cut open rooves,in the event of a fire, which may cause a collapse! [NOT EVERY building gets twin rafters cut by the carpenters]
