People wonder why I say the 90’s were the best decade for animated shows, and Hey Arnold is the #1 reason why. A lot of people try to argue that cartoons are just made for kids but this isn’t true at all. Hey Arnold is not just for kids, it’s actually a show for all ages. Not only is it funny and heartwarming for a broader audience but it has deep life lessons that adults can learn from the show as well. Arnold isn’t just a role model to children, he’s a role model to everyone.

Helga on the couch was a tear jerker of an episode but It really opened our eyes to seeking help if we think we are experiencing mental health issues. I Would say that it was legendary for breaking the stigma of mental health and therapy decades before that issue came to the forefront of our discourse.

As a therapist myself, I love the episode Helga on the Couch. I appreciate your insight into it! I always thought that it would be fun to do an in depth dive into the mental health and motivations of characters. Helga has always been the first character that I would want to tackle!

Dude that would be dope as fuck! My friends host a podcast, Whiskeylodeon, where they deep dive into Nick Toons and have a signature cocktail for each episode. They had a psychiatrist on their show and broke down the Helga in the couch episode. I thought it was so fascinating. I’ve wanted to do something like that as well with a Psychiatrist, however my friends did it and I didn’t want to “copy and paste” them 😂 I would love to see your character analysis if you ever get the time/chance to do that. I think it would be extremely cool. Thanks for the comment Jordan, I like talking about my mental health as much as possible. Sadly it took me almost losing myself and losing a couple of friends to open up and give therapy an actual shot. Anytime I can talk about it (I do it in the Tony Sampson, he played Eddy from Ed, Edd n Eddy) we talked about suicide, our struggles and depression as a whole. Thank you for doing what you do man, sorry for the long message!

@@WhatsInMyHeadPodcast No need for the apology at all! I love hearing about people's journeys and their experiences with mental health. It is paramount that people share their experiences so that we can continue to shine light on these very real issues. Each person who is vulnerable enough to share gets us one step closer to ending the stigma associated with opening up a conversation or seeking treatment. I admire when people are brave enough to share their very personal experiences. Thank you for doing that! I am certainly no psychiatrist, but I've always found it very interesting to hear the insight of others when conceptualizing and studying a case. It is really cool that each person who studies the case might hone in on completely different aspects of a person's life and may utilize a completely different set of theories and skills in their treatment. It's incredible that there are so many paths to recovery and healing. I've always found Helga to be a very complex, raw, and realistic character. She is written in a way that is so incredibly in depth when compared to most shows. The issues that are presented to her reflect real-life issues that so many people struggle with. (Abandonment/Attachment issues, trauma, defense mechanisms, compartmentalizing, alcoholism, neglect, bullying, self-esteem, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, and the list goes on!) It's so cool that Hey Arnold! is written in a way that allows the audience to really understand and empathize with her. A conceptualization of her case would be very difficult to organize, but it would be cool to see how she parallels very real types of behaviors in similar styles of cases. It would also be interesting to consider which types of theory a person may turn toward if they were ever to receive her specific case. I feel that the biggest hurdle in creating something like that would be organizing the information in a way that would be digestible, and by deciding which information is the most interesting for people! In the future, if I have the ability to do something like that and have a good idea, she would be the first character on my mind to study. Thank you for your reply and for your continued insight of characters, shows, and ideas that mean so much to so many. These types of conversations get us closer each day to living in a world where no one needs to live in fear of getting the help that they need to improve their lives.

Hey Arnold was the very first Nicktoon that I started watching Nickelodeon back in the fall of 1997, and the same year that I started watching Cartoon Network with Dexter's Laboratory as a kid back then. I hope someday that Hey Arnold will make a return on Nickelodeon to air brand new episodes.

The 90's were really a much better time for kids. Hey Arnold was able to deal with:Alcoholic and neglecting/abusive parents, bullying, death, violence and assault, addiction etc.. Nowadays kids are sheltered from any heavy topic

I don’t think they are sheltered from every big topic these days, but I’m ok for agree to disagreeing. But here is why I think that. There are quite a bit of kids shows that tackle such issues. And let’s not forget where Arnold was the show that would tackle the hard button issues and talk to us, not at us, it wasn’t the norm. There are plenty of shows from the 90s that wouldn’t go anywhere near a “hot button topic”. There were gems in the 90s like Arnold and today you can see some of that in shows like Bluey.

It was more so the people around the situation. Some folks were very kind and checked in on me when I wasn’t doing well. Some folks wanted nothing to do with it. I’ve seen the same kind of treatment out in the civilian world as well. It’s gotten a lot better with both sides of the coin when it comes to mental health. Got a long way to go still
