Crafting Narratives for Video Games, Film, and Television - Neil Druckmann and Dan Trachtenberg

Ойындар

Join Director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Black Mirror “Playtest”) in a conversation with Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us, Uncharted 4) as they discuss the creative process in crafting character-driven experiences for video games, and how it compares to the process in film and television.
Neil and Dan also share their impressions of how video games and film look to each other for inspiration in order to push their respective storytelling boundaries.

    This was a wonderful conversation between two men I could listen to all day. One thing I've been curious about with Uncharted 4's epilogue was whether they were conscious of the parallels or at least similarities between waking up and playing as Cassie and the beginning of The Last of Us when we wake up and first start playing as Sarah. I mean, they had to have been, right? I, for one, had an eerie sense of dread when I walked around as Cassie, like Nate was going to run in and say, "It's the Coopers. Somethin' ain't right with 'em."

    This is a year late, but I definitely think they knew. You gain control of Cassie with the exact same starting animation as you do with Sarah. Gave me an eerie feeling, too.

    Everyone is so quick to label him "SJW", because of Ellie and Lev. Here's a fun fact, these people EXIST in the world. Why not add different people for different stories? That's the whole point of creating art in any media. The second any of you see an LGBT character, it's dismissed as SJW, PC culture bullshit. Lev is complex, he's arrogant but vulnerable, and his loyalty is his strength and his weakness. But it's just PC bullshit.. so we just shouldn't have to see these characters in anything.. EVER? It's really not that serious. How about criticise Jesse's uselessness in the plot, or how Isaac was built up for nothing? You know, actual issues in the story?

  • @megaplatypus

    @megaplatypus

    It's because the inclusions are insincere. None of the relationships in TLOU2 matter. You can strip out most of the characters, all the 'woke' and straight stuff, and even the infected from the game, and nothing would change. Even at the end, Abby is still the SAME character as she was in the beginning, as she's made no decisions of her own, not even giving us an explanation on why she went back for Lev or Yara except that she had sex - homewrecker abusive sex mind you - with Owen. Like, she got some dick and grew a conscience? Even up to that point, she was angry that Owen didn't want to come back with her to Isaac to commit genocide. Lev even had to stop her from killing Dina, just like Owen had to stop her and her friends from killing Ellie. Even in the end, Abby's searching for the Fireflies, just a third version of the same terrorist groups she's been a part of her whole life - she hasn't changed. And Ellie - she doesn't grow either. There's no coming of age, no more wonder, no hope. Old Ellie is gone. After all the hell she went through in TLOU1, it's only because of Joel she gets PTSD? I mean honestly, there isn't a single part of this story that isn't contrived and puerile. It's 'current' social issues are the least of its problems. But hey at least Neil got to let us know how nostalgia cool he is with the gen x references, Seattle shout out and secret weed den, man. He's not cool with sexualizing women, but I guess it doesn't count if they're in dirty clothes. His is the only recent major studio game with tits and a sex scene, and he couldn't help but throw in Ellie's sideboob and underwear either. So unnecessary. He's catching this shit because he's a hypocrite and fake as hell. Both TLOU1 and Left Behind had LGBTQ and were well received.

    Jesse isn’t useless in the plot. He serves as Ellie’s conscience on the third day when he insists they need to give up and go back for Dina’s sake, but Ellie can’t leave yet because “I can’t leave without Tommy”. She was desperate to get to Abby before they had to go home and Jesse saw straight though her bullshit (“I really hope you make it”). In the end, in her desperation to get closure she fails to keep another hostage situation under control (she could have injured Owen before he thought to charge at her, she could have hung back and attempted to corner them one on one) and kills more of Abby’s friends. And who gets hit by Abby’s retribution? Jesse, who just wanted to do right by his friends. Also, he’s a really funny character, how can him “useless”?? I thought Isaac was a great character, but he’s not important to this story. If they do a TLOU3 I hope we will see the consequences of Yara killing him and leaving a potential power vacuum behind.

  • @megaplatypus

    @megaplatypus

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@meh23p @meh I love Jesse. But he isn't given any depth. His being a 'conscience' for Ellie is not necessary, as she is well aware that Dina needs care. Jesse is also the one who makes the final call when he says, 'Screw it. Let's get Tommy,' which undermines his needing to be a conscience for Ellie. He can be written out of this scene as the outcome is still the same with or without him. It is also not necessary for him to remind the player, as anyone invested already knows the difficult situation Ellie is in. You might see this in a game made for kids, but here it's just handholding. It couldn't be that Ellie found Mel with child, and been faced with the task of having to take care of said child after she had killed her mother, but instead they gave us a contrived story about two couples - parents to be - set up merely to be emotional foils for the two lead characters. While the former would've delivered longstanding consequences and some complexity to Ellie's, Dina's, and Abby's futures, they were instead surrounded by friends who were literally written-in to die. They're shallow, because this is how the director behind TLOU2 sees people in the real world.

    The problem is how forced and artificial it feels. The Last of Us 2’s story feels like a poorly made Netflix Original compared to the Last of Us 1. In the first games the characters and dialogue felt real and grounded. In the sequel it just felt off, and characters didn’t behave or act the way they did in the first game, and it’s not “character development”. It’s them making dumb choices for the sake of subverting expectations and moving the mediocre story along.
