As far as I know, how accurate you are at cutting the line has no effect on how much meat and fur you get. What you will get after a while of harvesting is a perk that increases the amount you get. There's a whole bunch of perks in the progression tab in the book. As for the skulls, they can be made into trophies to hang on your wall.
ALWAYS empty your pack before going out to collect stuff.

Not going to lie, the building is a bit tedious, sticks, stones, reeds, logs, repeat.

absolutely agree... but if you always start with an empty pack, you make fewer trips back and forth to get what you need. You might end up with a LARGE overstock of some items, but that just means it's less that you'll need to collect next round.
Not sure if you know, but you can use a bowl to get water out of the bucket.

Yeah, I carry bowls of soup all the time.
Not really down on the quest as i love mine but i think sometimes a game is either too much for the quest or too much for the devs!
