Cracking Up a Customer

Ойын-сауық

The plaintiff says she hired the defendant to replace a slab of concrete by her garage, and it began cracking just a few months later. She’s sure he used a bad batch of concrete, and she’s suing for her money back. The defendant says he doesn’t make the concrete - he just installs it. He claims he offered to rip it up and reinstall it, but the plaintiff said he took too long.

he was going to and couldn't until he had an opening, but that wasn't a more dram, atic enough answer for them. remember, this is television, drama sells, he didn't deliver. If she has cancer then a concrete slab is the least of her worries. I care for my husband with cancer & there isn't one contractor screw up that would get me this upset. Rock salt cracked it, he didn't deliver on the drama, judge had to scream & yell to give good tv

I worked concrete 33 years. Looking at photos, I would bet I know what happened. First red flag is they took a week to remove the old concrete and they used sledge hammers. A skid loader with a breaker could do the job in a half hour. They poured in August. I doubt they were experienced masons by the way they demoed old slab. They did not add enough water on site, poured way too dry, and in order to finish they threw a lot of water on top of the concrete to work up slurry to make it look good. That creates two different pieces of concrete. The freeze thaw cycle through the winter will pop the top off the slab. Salt will damage concrete the first 6 months.

My husband and I learned the hard way what ice melting salt can do to concrete 😓. By time spring came our sidewalk and steps looked like someone attacked them with a sledgehammer. Concrete that has lasted for almost as long as we had been a live, in perfect condition completely ruined within a few months. That's when an older neighbor told us why we should not use salt, smh. We now only use salts that say it's safe for concrete and pets.

While this guy was in the wrong, not all contractors are in this kind of situation. My dad's a contractor and a good one. A year and a half ago, he got into a similar situation with a customer who has proven to be a complete NUTJOB!!! When she first complained, she called drunk so he didn't take her seriously at first. When she called again later, he agreed to fix the supposed problem and sent her all of the paperwork with regards to that. Having watched all of these court shows, I'm always telling him to make sure that's in order. She complained MONTHS LATER so he had to fit her into his schedule rather than just returning immediately. He had other jobs to take care of at that point, this wasn't something that happened 2 days after the job ended, it was more like 2 to 3 MONTHS later. The Friday before he was scheduled to return (and he has all of the emails and stuff to her to prove that he was returning and she knew about it), she suddenly files all sorts of complaints against him and no longer wants him to fix the supposed problem. She just kept escalating the issue. The only thing that came of the complaints was that he was told to modify his contracts a bit, get some extra signatures or something like that. Her demands kept getting more and more ridiculous and then suddenly, she contacts him and is like "will you come back and fix this now???" On the advice of his lawyer, he refused because after MONTHS of hell, he wanted nothing more to do with her and he didn't trust her not to suddenly change her mind again and try to have him arrested for trespassing or something like that when he showed up. She then had a lawyer send a demand letter directly to him (which violated her supposed to contact only his lawyer) for an absurd amount of money which he of course refused and pointed out the violation about. We haven't heard from her since. HOPEFULLY that was the end of it given how long it's been. The only thing that my dad can think is that some other contractor who wanted the job probably got into her head about this and made her think that he did something wrong. This is a customer that he had done NUMEROUS jobs for in the past, not a stranger. She had even recommended him to other people over the years. Its no wonder he went out of business.. his attitude sucks and he's not very professional. Although I guess he could have been going through something but thats still no reason to be unprofessional. Also no reason to leave the lady hanging. Even if he had to pay someone else to do it.

He deserved every bit of that tongue lashing. Not only does the show pay out the judgement owed to the plaintiff, they are also paid an appearance fee, along with their flight and hotel. So, in exchange for all of that, it was very satisfying to see him being called out for his appalling business practice, not to mention shoddy as hell concrete job.

So he closed his business down because there was not enough work, but he was so busy that he couldn't make it back to her house for six months. Another poster said the guy might have depression, which actually could be the case. In any event I'm glad plaintiff got her money back. She was the innocent victim here.

7:12 it seems they're upset he didn't give a more dramatic answer. There is no concrete that can handle rock salt. doesn't happen. Sounds like they wanted a dramatic scene, didn't get it and finished it themselves by having the judge scream & yell.

I can tell you that the defendant is lying through his teeth by just listening to the very first words he said, that he has a license or he had a license I don't think he ever had a license and I don't think he's a contractor I think he's a handyman

Unless the customer gave him the materials and said use this. He's the one who decided what materials to use. He is responsible. This is like a butcher selling bad meat and saying well, I just cut the meat, it's not my fault if it's bad.
