CR250 Motocross Bike Or Enduro? | New To Me Bike ✊

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Breaking in a new to me bike, should it be used for enduro or remain a motocross legend?
The Honda CR250R was a Honda racing dirt bike. The prototype was built in 1971, but it was not until late 1972 that production of the 1973 model "out of the box racers" began sale to the general public. The CR250 was produced for nearly 37 years, 2007 being the final year of production.
In 1997, Honda produced an industry first, an aluminum chassis for a motocross motorcycle. These 'first gen' frames were thick, rigid, and were a big change from the previous steel frames, where flexibility had been seen as a problem in the early years. The 1997-8 engines were equipped with a new stator, which supplied DC voltage for the new Keihin carburetor with an electronic 'Power Jet' system, in efforts to control lean mixture preignition. Included in the new electrics was a capacitor and a rectifier/regulator. The 1999 model was almost identical but the Power Jet had disappeared.
For 2000, the 'second gen' aluminum frame was less rigid, with thinner twin-spars, providing a rigidity decrease and better handling. The Keihin PWK carburetor replaced earlier PJ models. The CDI box limited RPMs to 8000. The 2001 model was nearly identical, with a change to a different CDI box, adding 500 RPM to the redline where two more horsepower lurked. The new Mikuni TMX carburetor proved to be temperamental to weather changes.
For 2002, Honda ended the outstanding interchangeability that had existed from 1992~2001, when a completely new engine arrived with a change from cylinder reed induction to an engine case reed induction system and an electronically controlled, cable operated RC valve in place of the centrifugally operated exhaust valve system used since 1992. A TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) was added to the carburetor, powered by a new stator. The ECM would now be able to retard ignition timing to preclude preignition, though there was no ping sensor anywhere.
The third & final generation of the CR250 aluminum chassis also made its appearance, which was thinner, with better flex properties. The same engine & chassis, with minor suspension & plastics changes, continued on until production of this 2-stroke stopped in 2007. Although the case reed engine has potentially the best design, it was never developed to its full potential by Honda, as the industry attention rapidly turned to four stroke engine development. Many owners of the final generation of the CR250 felt the need to turn to the aftermarket to bring that engine to its full potential. The 2001 models continue to be savored by lovers of the CR250, considered the best of the best ever produced.

Just picked up a 2000 and took a brief ride in the woods, what a workout in the tight gnarly stuff. Damn the bike is fast with stock sprockets in just 1st gear! 🎉

After using e start for 9-10 years a kickstarter feels awkward. Maybe I’m just old. Great video

I'm with you at 52 I love my e button but the penalty is all those extras add weight so picking up this bike if I fall is ridiculously light so that's a benefit also throwing it around feels like a trials bike! I will have another 300 down the road..

Great resto-job! Just bought a '19 300 XC, with "everything" I wanted on it. Question for you: 300 XC Motocross or Enduro?, my opinion is that the 300 is the sweet spot and can do it all, for this X-MX'r anyway, (now 64 yrs young).

That looks great in black, nice work! For similar riding would you recommend this bike for an adult 5-7 220lb rider getting more serious off of a worked YZ85? Im wondering how easy it is to control the power and weight on a full size. Thanks - your new sub

Thanks I appreciate that. I like the older Honda's based on reliability standpoint and they go like heck! The only downfall is no electric start.. they start easy anyway so no big deal. They can be fined tuned for any rider weight and go with a bigger flywheel weight like 12oz or more. Also add a kickstand and steel clutch plates for an even heavier flywheel! The more flywheel weight the easy to control off road!!

@@HeddleTown great to hear this i found the fww weight and slightly shorter gearing very helpful with trail riding the little YZ. Hope to move up to a 125 or 250 soon and enjoy the honda reliability as you mention. Though this yami has been fantastic not really skipped a beat in many years of casual fun except for a pesky kickstart gear problem, Never having had an electric start dirtbike before i know whenever my first one does come along i will have serious trouble going back 😂

Is it necessary to do a 1st gear swap on this bike, or does the heavier flywheel kind of take care of that?

I don't think it is the hydraulic clutch also really helps and I have a 50 tooth rear you could goto a 52 but you would loose speed in 5th!

I found a 2023 KLX230R guy wants $4150 for. He says he rode it twice in the yard and wants rid of it. I can totally afford it, but I am trying really hard to convince myself that I can't.

Recently bought a klx300 dual sport. I love the bike as a camp bike and for easy trail riding but a 2 smoker will blow the decals off of it. It all depends on what you want to use it for.
