I actually looked it up after seeing similar videos. In Arkansas it is a $400 fine for Failure to Yield to an Emergency Vehicle that has flashing warning lights in red and/or blue and is sounding a siren. This is on top of any other fines or prison time for damage and injuries caused by reckless driving by drivers that think they are more important than a Rescue Truck trying to get to a scene to save lives.

that loud one that runs intermitentyl is what we refer to as a "federal" siren, I'm pretty sure because it's manufactured by the Federal Siren Company. Uses air pressure to spin a wheel of blades that creates the sound. I've never used one like they do in this vid, I prefer to give it one big run up when approaching an intersection. The increasing pitch is what catches peoples attention. But I'm in a very rural town, no freeways like these guys have got. Good job by all.

Zack, I truly hope you weren't told that precious bit of information by another firefighter. Any pressurized vehicle parts are subject to "exploding" and "launching" from the vehicle. I have witnessed it on more than one occasion while working at a fire academy where we typically burn at least 6-7 cars for each recruit class. There are also documented incidents and articles available to support this fact as well. Please do not relay that type of false information to our brother firefighters. It may end up getting someone hurt or killed, It might even be one of your best friends in the station that pays the price. Operating in front of any burning vehicle is a bad idea. As mentioned earlier, use your saws, hydraulics, or if you only have hand tools, pry the corner of the hood up along the fender. Any old school Porta Power duck bills laying around the station tool rooms? They work perfectly!

Exactly! Zack needs to do his research because cars, especially from the 1970's through the 1990's had the shock absorbing bumpers. There are plenty of videos out there showing what happens. There are many articles published when firefighters thought a tire exploded and found the bumper laying 25 feet down the road. There is a great video out there (I say great in terms of learning not because the firefighter got hurt) of a bumper taking down a firefighter who was standing in its path. So Zack, as was said before, if you don't know, don't say anything. It is not a myth it is real and that is why firefighters are taught how to approach a vehicle.

They should have a bunch of law enforcement vehicles follow "lights & sirens" vehicles so that they can cite drivers who don't pull over and stop for emergency vehicles. Any state could make a lot of money just from these infractions. Remember: fire/paramedic units could be going to help your family member.

That speed you are referring to is the speed of sound, I don't think he was traveling at or near 340 m/s. Also how would have driven on the left side when entering the highway? You can clearly see that there are 2 merge lanes, a concrete median, and then the highway he would have to cross over to travel on the left hand side. The driver had no other option but to drive up the right shoulder till he got closer to the accident. When off the highway he was driving int he left/median, looked fine.

You wonder WTF in wrong with some people.Back when I worked for the CDF our unit, on the way to a call with lights and siren came up behind a camper doing about 35 mph. We could not get around him and he would not speed up, move over or get out of the way. We had to crawl along for at least a mile until we could pass. There wasn't a chance he couldn't hear or see us. My stomach churns just to think of it. Inex-fucking-plicable.

they do explode if heated enough. Thats why you approach from an angle. Don tell me its false, I wish i still had the picture to prove it. Went to a car fire at a dwelling, it was well off, when we arrived got off and got the line charged and began to approach we heard an explosion, thinking it was just a tire we went about our job til some one came out from a neighbors house saying something came thru the wall. On investigation we found a bumber shock in thier living room and hole in bumber.
