CP2816 "TRIAL RUN" - August 3-4th, 2023 - FULL Version
CP 2816 is Alive! and being tested for the proposed historic run from Calgary to Mexico City starting in April 2024.
This video is to reflect the Southern Alberta Prairies with its terrain and variable "climatic conditions" (Dust, Heat, Wind etc.), with a mix of distance shots and closeups. The aim is to also highlight the work of the entire "2816 Steam Crew", seen and not seen.
Due to short notice and a prior commitment, I was only able to chase CP2816 from Calgary to Okotoks on Day 1. Day two: I was able to chase 2816 from Nobleford to Blackie. This was a "Trial Run" for me with totally new camera and audio setup; so please forgive the "wind noise" and other related technical issues.

It brings me joy to see more steam returning! Proud of you Canada! Keeping our shared steam heritages alive!! :)

the rail road expanded the US west and tied canada together as a nation. there needs to be more of these babies out there showing our respective populations what brought our countries to where they are now. not enough people know the history and our countries are worse off for it.
The legend returns.

@thompsonriverrailfan I meant the youtuber, but I guess at the same time, I should also include the train. They are both legendary.
This footage, editing, the whole package: ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY! Thank you so much for putting in all this effort and time to produce something that means so much to so many!
I can't wait to catch this beauty when she comes down to Texas
Looking and sounding spectacular!
I've always loved the unique design of Canadian steam locomotives Glad another one back under steam!
Welcome back 2816!
This is simply amazing. The quality is great, the camera shots are also great.
She’s back!!!!!!😊

Spectacular footage!
Nice to see the Smoky Smith car. I have that car on my HO scale Layout! Pulled by a Rapido HO scale Royal Hudson. Great to see one running again.
This is such amazing filming from close up shot of sidings to best spots to video at!
Just ran across the video. Have seen 2816 and cars many times go by very near our place SE of Alderside. Always exciting. Saw the train as it went by our place the day it went south. Great technical video. I'm sure there was a drone shot in there which was fabulous. Thank you for the effort. !

Pleased to see steam not being forgotten in Canada. I just missed steam when I lived in Montreal in 1963/4. Just got back from a tour of steam railways in North Wales - that's the place to see a lot of wonderful steam railways in a smallish area. It rains a lot though.
Great video and thanks for uploading this video! 😊
Thanks, I’ve been waiting for this.
Beautiful locomotive! Excellent video! Thank you!
Talk about a spit shine! She’s a beauty!!
Congratulations to the whole team: and to my friend Jordy an engineer on the tour! Rodney Vancouver Island
Beautiful video! Thanks!
That’s beautiful.
Awesome catches great chase and nice video
We need 2860 now so we can double header.
Many thanks for posting a very fine video without any overhead wires for electricity collection
return of the king
What a beauty!
Excellent video, magnificent train!
Healthy sounding engine
1st time i ever seen a steamer with ditch lights 😅
Already have my designated spot to railfan. I believe it will come through Milwaukee.
The legendary empress is back. She's been steamed up by CPKC as they kept their promise. She's still a legendary steam locomotive. I can't wait for her Transnational tour. The yard is where they store their CP Holiday Train cars until it's time for them to be on the move.
Thank God CP 2816's back and E. Hunter Harrison is no longer in the picture.
Lookin' good.
Well done! Thank you. Is there videof lighting the fire for the firstime since the locomotive was retired? Sad to see "ditch lights" improperly added to the locomotive. Burning fuel oil? Natural gas? Sounds like a Chinese whistle sounded by and electric valve.
She still have her journal bearings or roller bearings? She journal box casting are still there I believe
Cool!
Well this channel is back up and running. 😂
I don't consider wind noise (in this case) a technical issue. It's part of the environment being filmed, we can't feel the wind; but if it's there and not overpowering it is fine IMHO. Great work!
@CP2816HD
11 ай бұрын
Sorry, I see you haven't had the "experience"... Wind Noise is a major "Technical" issue. Unprotected camera mics pick up even the slightest breeze and Southern Alberta is known for it's WIND!
Hope to see her States side soon.
Прекрасный поезд-ретро. ❤😊
Will it go to galt/Cambridge?
I love how the secondary whistle on 2816 sounds close to a diesel air horn! I wonder if that was intentional
@trainman2393
10 ай бұрын
It’s because the whistle is activated by pushbutton instead of the more traditional Whistle cord. There’s no variation in the pitch. Myself, I can’t stand push button activated Whistles, for exactly the same reason you like it, it sounds too much like an air horn
@trainman2393
10 ай бұрын
The deeper toned Whistle is a six Chime much like on the southern pacific, and is activated by a Whistle cord. So much better sounding when the engineer can vary the pitch by how the cord is manipulated.
What happened to 2816's auxiliary tender that they are borrowing 4449's instead?
@AidanDesaiRailProductions2003

Nothing happened to it. They just wanted two aux tenders for the tour
And they got an F unit for the electrics! Well done! (Can't stand when they use modern growlers for that role)

Is the proposed April 2024 run going to be with passenger coaches? If so, how does one purchase this trip?
@CP2816HD

As far as I know, the trip is strictly for CP and KCS executive to celebrate the merger.
So when 2816 eventually embarks on that historic trip from Calgary Alberta, Canada to Mexico City, Mexico and return in April of 2024, will you eventually chase it the whole way in both directions or just for a few certain segments?

Is it just me or when I put 2816’s bell sound at 1.75x or 2x speed, it sounds like she had a pneumatic bell.

The audio was a "salvage" job to remove the wind noise from the camera microphones, I'm not sure what remaining effect it had onthe audio, yet alone speeded up

Converted by the CPR to oil many, many decades ago.
20:38 HI CHRISTIAN!
Burning oil now
That's really beautiful. I hate the ugly diesel but I guess its the law now.
@trainman2393
10 ай бұрын
The diesel is there, because the steam engine cannot generate electricity for the train. It’s been a long time now since steam was piped to an entire passenger train to power everything. The Diesel is not providing any pulling power of all on a train like this.
When Will CPKC Steam Up 2860?
I guess they're only allowed to operate the 2816 at the maximum freight train speed (60mph in most of Canada) when on CPKC track. Correct?
Should edit out the scenes that are so distant

That's the difference between you and I (Ooops, you have no videos). What are you looking at? Video great but the audio lowest i've ever heard, to bad . The whistle is not what i remember (Solenoid controlled??!! ,no slowly opening and closing valve or does the engineer or fireman need training. This was a "test run" for me, my external wind protected audio microphone "failed" and I was reliant on the onboard unprotected camera microphones. You may have noticed the wind in the video. I attempted to clean some of that "noise" in post; but I am only a guppy in audio processing. Please take into account the recording device and weather conditions. After twelve years CP2816 was running again, I got some video... I was Happy! The trip was a "learning" experience... I have a bunch of work to do!

She has two whistles, one is off of a 2-10-4 Selkirk locomotive, operated by an air actuated valve and uses superheated steam, which is the one closest to the front of the boiler, and the other Is a six chime which is pullcord operated in front of the cab.
@rickpalmer9518

@@modemdog3649 All steam whistles should be operated by the cord operated valve which is how it gives steam engines character, someone should correct this fast, off- on steam whistles don't belong on this engine otherwise it sounds like crappy Chinese QJ whistle untiI Iowa Interstate 6988 was north Americanized. Before you give any "advice", I politely suggest that you know what you're talking about. What lens or lenses are you using and are you actually filming trains? I have never been fast enough to zoom out when the approaching train is close even in the old high end camcorder days, even if it had a "Fisheye" lens. Above all what's YOUR Field of View when an object the size of a train is 5m away from you; how much can you see? Take a lesson in reality before you give "advice".. Words of wisdom from an old guy!
