If your filter is a micro membrane filter (like a Sawyer but others are similar) and it freezes, it is no longer safe to use it because it isn’t preventing bacteria from passing through. If the temps are going below zero, it’s best to keep your filter inside your coat to keep it from freezing.

Thanks for the heads up! And for anyone else who might have been in the same situation, turns out you can test the integrity of the filter using this method: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4J4lZWCiMm_qqg.html

That is right. There are water molecules that stay within the fibers that when it freezes it expands break the microfibers. Some people keep them within themselves so that their body warms it up prevents it from freezing

It is snowing on this calm Saturday morning in northern Germany where I live near the Baltic Sea, and it is the perfect setting for watching your winter hike. Loving nature and being outdoors myself, I am so happy to have found your channel a few weeks ago, and I have already enjoyed watching many of your adventures, and I am thrilled that there still are so many more for me to discover, and I hope there will be many new ones for many more years!! Your videos are a unique composition of superb filming, beautiful nature, meaningful narration, excellent editing and amazing self composed music. Your authenticity, camaraderie, respect for nature as well as your reflections on life and your appreciation of the whole experience are so beautiful and make watching your videos so enjoyable. Robby, Andrew, Bryan and Thomas…thank you so much!! Love, Corinna 💚 P.S.: I hope we won’t lose you to the movie industry…great acting guys!! 😃

Baking bread on a stick is a campfire classic in Denmark. The secret is making it very thin on the stick, bake it over embers and looooooots of patience. We usually just make a standard, plain wheat, dough for rolls and eat with ketchup and maybe a hotdog, but now I wanna experiment.

I found your videos a few weeks ago, when I was looking for a video of hiking in National Parks. My Granddaughter was hiking/camping at that time in a series of the National Parks. I completely love your videos. Not just watching your hiking adventures, but your respect of Nature, respect of each other, your knowledge of nature/plants/trees/flowers.... Also, the soothing music being played in the background. I have always loved Nature and hiking. Just never have gone on hikes as long as yours! But, I swear, if I weren't almost 72 years old, I would be out there hiking long hikes like you! :) Thank you for letting me live vicariously at this time in my life, which accompany me with my own wonderful Nature memories. ( I still do go on hikes, but again, shorter ones now!) Oh, and I also like your discussions of food you are cooking too !! :) PS. OMG---and that Video where you were doing an enactment of similar things in Star Treck???!!! HAHAHA!! I thought your program was finished for the evening and I was walking around here, when I heard some odd conversation coming from my TV. I THOUGHT the show had segued into a new KZread show. Nope. It was you guys --and TOTALLY cracked me up!! HAHAHA )

I subscribed to your KZread channel just this weekend and i love your content a lot. I have 2 children ( sons) . I would love to see them explore the outdoor. Your videos inspire me to encourage my children to do things with nature. I have 14 years old and i let him watch your videos. He likes Nature too. We are from Jersey City, NJ. We sometimes go to upstate NY to see nature. Last March we went to LA to visit Yosemite but unfortunately it was closed 😊and i think its still close until now because of blizzard. We will try again in 2 years but definitely do it in the summer. Anyways, you are an inspiration to me. Thanks for your content. I hope some day my kids will find a group of friends like you who would explore nature to get high than to do drugs. ❤ More power and please keep inspiring people, especially thevyoung ones.

For the winter, I'll put on the appropriate layers and give myself 20 minutes outdoors. It's also a good reminder that some discomfort keeps us from taking our favorite things for granted.

Good job managing a tough fire Andrew and guys. I kept thinking to myself that there should be larger wood pieces tucked against the fire to dry out. Then there they were. Shred up some birch bark next time. It's tough to do when wet, like anything else, but it does still burn well for tinder even if it's wet. Birch wood chunks too.

Usually we would bring ready made plain dough, make the dough strip quite thin before you wrap it around a stick and then bake it slowly over the fire. Super yummy with some Nutella or hot dogs that you also roast on a stick over the fire 😋

Although it might sound daunting and take some experience, camping in the winter can give you a new-found appreciation of the season we often denigrate as being drab and lifeless. Perfectly said, Robby.

Love watching your crew enjoy your meals! It's definitely always my favorite part of any trip. I make trail congee regularly, but dehydrate my own rice bc Instant Rice has a less starchy grain. For those of us gram weenies, pork floss has high cal/oz with a ton of protein. Another winter favorite is trail hot pot, since freeze dried fish cake, tofu, etc., are really easy to find in asian groceries.

Rice is added to lots of dishes in southern Louisiana, it's rice growing country. My WASP father has rice with almost every meal.

The deer will dig up the leaves under an oak tree looking for acorns. The turkeys will come along and scratch for bugs in those areas. Great video guys!

About half way through, loving it so far! I'm surprised you guys don't hike with microspikes, in the winter here in the Whites they are basically permanently attached to my boots.

I'm not surprised at the size of the turkey beds. We had two in the woods behind our place two years ago, and about 20 this year. The flocks grow quickly! And to think they were extinct where I am in the 1970's, when the government re-introduced them in the wild.

An easy way to keep your hoses from freezing is to just blow back into them to clear the water.
