I’m happy the dog survived. The coyote could have easily killed it. I think it’s better to pick up a small pet when it’s in danger of being attacked if anything.

Little or big, its human nature. While dogs always risk their lives to save their human, Humans just sacrifice their dog to save themselves. Disgusting. No personal grudge against the little girl but she could have picked up the dog.

@@alphafitter4699lol I don’t think you understand coyotes. They are very skittish animals also very curious. The coyote was checking out the dog. I stand by what I said. Had she picked up the dog and stood her ground and yelled/clapped her hands. Nobody would have gotten hurt. We are talking about one coyote….I see them all the time and I live very close to where this happened. You need to know how to react to keep yourself and your pets safe. What she Did was the opposite of what you should do. If you want to protect your pet don’t drop the leash and run away. She put herself and the dog in even more danger by reacting how she did.

Coyotes will not attack anything bigger than a raccoon by itself. A pack may bring down a deer but not a single coyote. The girl was much bigger than the lone coyote would attempt to prey on. It was after the dog from the start. I agree with the OP of this thread.

So it is always possible to breed the most ferocious aspects of wolves into a dog breed. In my opinion, many of the terrier breeds seem to have some of the most fierce aspects of wolves in terms of their psychology. One of the reasons the wolverine is feared by most animals and people is their relentless ferocity and lack of fear. The coyote may have been surprised that this tiny prey like animal had the capacity to fight back.

What are you and 27 morons crying about? Kids walk dogs in residential neighborhoods all the time. 9,999,999 of them come home safe for every 1 girl thats attacked by a coyote like this. Things like this take 20-30 years to happen one time in a neighborhood, and you want every parent there to be paranoid, look for coyotes always. What else? Should you check the sky to make sure a plane isn't falling? Should you check the water quality to make sure it isn't poison every day? Should you make sure your city isn't about to fall into a giant sinkhole every day? You won't enjoy life very much thinking its not safe to let your daughter walk your dog. You live life according to the safest decisions possible. And letting a 12 year old girl walk a dog in an upscale neighborhood is an absolutely safe decision for 99% of the 1st world. This girl and her family got unlucky, it happens, you don't need to judge. Coyote attacks happen once in DECADES throughout the ENTIRE country. Its one of the rarest wild animal attacks in America. Stop being so paranoid.

We live in the country and have a coyote pack living on our property; in the winter, you can follow their tracks right to their den. We hear them at night and they occasionally help themselves to a duck, but in all the years we've lived here, we've never actually seen one. They're incredibly elusive - or should be. Our neighbour farms cattle and hunts them - if you think that's cruel, consider that the pack waits patiently while the cows give birth; they'll even pull a half-born calf out of a cow. Those are problem coyotes - and so is the one above, hunting a small dog and owner in broad daylight. It's really passing-the-buck for the city to say, "It's not our problem," and to make suggestions that you walk elsewhere and "take precautions." This is why people take steps on their own - increasingly, people are discovering that they can't count on government for much other than collecting their money and advising them on all the things they can't do.

We are seeing them more and more in the daytime as there is less places for them to hide as we keep destroying their habitat. Also I have no doubt the only reason this happened is bc the girl was walking a tiny dog that looked delicious to the coyote, and naturally it went for it as soon as she dropped that leash. I think by your comment its safe to say you have not. A coyote isnt very large and in no way would be able to drag this girls wailing body away into the forest alone, thats laughable, Maybe if they were in a group and very hungry, but they tend to hunt and travel alone, or in a pair. There is really no reason to act so terrified and upset and angry, they are coyotes not wolves or bears...I live very close to where this particular incident happened, Ive lived here for 25 years and the coyotes have been here the whole time and we occasionally come across each other on walking trails its really not a big deal. Let mother nature be, the government doesn't need to go messing with nature, what do you propose? Killing them off? Relocating them? these are both unrealistic and unethical. @@Kyle-sp6dd Google Taylor Mitchell killed by coyotes. 19 yo. Adult. A teenager in Nova Scotia was mauled and killed by coyotes in 2009 while hiking in Cape Breton Highlands National Park according to CNN. Chip Bird, the Parks Canada field unit superintendent for Cape Breton, said Taylor Mitchell, 19, was at the beginning of the Skyline Trail when the attack occurred. Hikers apparently saw the coyotes attacking Mitchell and immediately dialed 911. She was airlifted to a Halifax hospital, where she died almost 12 hours later, Bird said. So, I DO know this predator quite well and it is no laughing matter. There is so much misinformation out there now about coyotes yet their populations are exploding. Along with our own encroachment and development into their natural habitats, this causes a bad equation where the complacency or unawareness of the actual dangers that abound will and has ended in the death of a human. Now, with that said it is rare but it is very easily possible. When the populations increase and food runs out where they are normally unseen and live their secretive lives, attacks occur and they are no longer so secretive. This will continue and it will escalate from pets to humans. Without education, intervention, and the respect the coyotes deserve, the falsehoods and flat out denial of the present dangers they present, there will be a brother, sister, parent, aunt, uncle saying,,, why didn't anyone tell us how dangerous they were? I have seen the same size coyote pick up a 100 lb. White tail doe by the middle of her spine and slowly but steadily carry her through a cut cornfield 600 yds. to the fence line. The head and the hams were dragging, yet the coyote seemed very capable and familiar with the task. A 50 lb 10 year old girl unfortunately would be no comparison. Unfourtunatley the 19 yo. Taylor Mitchell, much larger and stronger, did not have a chance either. Also, they are pack animals and live in family groups. You are correct where they may normally hunt singularly or in pairs unlike wolves. This also is a misleading impression that they do not live in packs. When a pack is on the hunt and their cunningness comes into play, a child or even an adult human will not fair very well. Quit misleading people with misinformation and instead honor the mighty coyote with the respect it deserves. They are survivors and are very much a smart predator.

@@juliannaalfaro4543 >"How come coyote attack dogs? Dogs are not food" Coyotes eat plant and animal life (omnivores), but they prefer meat. Therefore, the coyote has been attacking live animals smaller (e.g., rabbits, squirrels) as a way of life, and if there are none smaller than the coyote, they will attack larger animals. Any time coyotes and humans live close to each other, coyotes have been killing cats and dogs if there is nothing else accessible. Do you think the Yorkie could outrun a rabbit? Rabbits can evade a coyote sometimes because they are very quick and know how to hide. The Yorkie is not skilled at avoiding being caught by a coyote, so it is an easy catch for the coyote. As humans build homes in the homeland of the coyote, the coyote is going to venture into the human living space. If they can find lots of scraps of food, it is no different than if the humans are feeding the coyotes. Therefore, they will return. When they stop a small animal with short legs that it knows it can easily catch, it is going to go for the fresh meat at some point.

Not so sure. There's a video of a pitbull who meets a coyote who doesn't back down.

In an area where coyotes are known to live the girl should have been taught how to react to a coyote, or better yet not walk the dog by herself. That dog is a prey animal in the coyote's eyes and that girl did the opposite of what she should have done.

Foolish girl could've held up the dog on her arms if she really cared about her dog. I've seen similar video and the woman held the dog on her arm to protect it from Coyote attack.
