Covingtion Planter First Test Run

Спорт

Here I'm trying to figure things out with this planter. Testing it and watching the footage has shown me a lot. I tried setting the cutting/opening wheel depth, but the process of setting the press wheel on a board and adjusting the cutting wheel didn't seem to work for me. The last I left it the cutting wheel was raised as high as it could go. Even with that the level at which I put the planter down has the biggest effect on depth. The planter floats on the cultivator and if I am pushing the cultivator down it stops the float process and in turn pushes the planter deeper. There were a couple of times when the cultivator and shovel dug in and stopped the tractor because I had it too low. What I need to figure out is how to consistently set the depth with the three point hitch. That is still a work in process. Right now this Kubota does not have a system to allow for depth limiting that i am aware of.

Cool implement! Funny, I was teaching The Agricultural Revolution in World History and talking about Jethro Tull's seed drill! 😅

I bought one of these in 2013, it is amTP-46. I actually used the fertilizer feature for the first time last year and was very pleased with how it worked. I set up my presswheel/furrow disc on a 2x6 board and it plants about 1 1/2 in. deep. It definitely helps if you have an assistant to walk beside the planter until you get the depth correct using the 3 point hitch. I read on a forum where one guy replaced the 4 in. shovel with a 2 in. point and cut 1 in. off the bottom of the fertilizer drop tubes and this supposedly reduced or eliminated clogging the tubes with dirt if you stop the tractor without raising the planter first. I have been meaning to try this but have not yet. I use my planter to plant peas and sweet corn.

Awesome James! I've done three tests so far and I think I have the depth figured out. One thing I was doing was setting the three point too low and it was actually causing the cultivator to sit on top of the planter and pushing it down into dirt several inches. I now have it on a tractor where I can control the 3 point level and I have the planter floating as it is supposed to. I was going to plant this Saturday, but no rain is forecast for several days so I'm going to wait.

I bought a new one and used it to plant a variety of crops this year. I can’t wait to sell it and buy a John Deere planter. My Covington has worked me to death. It seems that the front plows are too long, therefore plow too deep without the rear cultivators touching the ground. I’ve had bushings, bolts, chain and everything else you can think of go wrong with this thing. When it’s working it does a great job. But make sure you have lots of tools with you when you go to the field.

Hmm, very interesting. Not sure if you've seen some of my videos with results, but yes I have a lot of gaps - more so than plants - and I can only assume that it was going too deep. I may have to try taking that front shovel off if indeed that is the problem. Thanks for the comment and your information.

@@cervus-venator I’ve planted about 8 acres with it this year. Planted 3 acres of pumpkins yesterday and the bushings and bolts that hold the planter assembly fell out. Haha. I was almost done planting so I quit for the day. Gotta order bushings and bolts to put the planter back on the cultivators. I’ve gotten great stands of corn, beans, peas. It always seems like the front plow is too deep and the cultivators too shallow and the rear presser wheel dragging when I lift up to turn around. I’ve tried everything. Thanks for the reply. Have a great day. 👍

All those years in school hating Math & look how much Math you use now lol. Takes a lot figuring gear/cog ratios , how much seed per acre etc. Not sure the difference but my birds & critters dont like wally world bulk black sunflower seed as good as co-op seed. Looks about the same but Im not the one chewing it. 😂 Enjoy the planting videos. While listening to God Made A Farmer - Paul Harvey. 👍🙏

Thanks Bill. Yeah I use a lot of math in a lot of things I do but no so much the Algebra. More so the general math and geometry. My friend said the same about his bird seed in that the birds seemed to like the name brand seed better than just the bulk seed.

I've never planted sunflowers before, but wanted to and knew I needed a planter. Although another youtuber does his sunflowers by broadcasting them. That is how I plan the millet is by broadcasting. This planter is a row planter so I'm actually getting into farming practices now.
