COVID Masks | Do Masks Help?

There is very little good quality evidence surrounding COVID masks. In this video, I review a large cluster randomized trial comparing no intervention against cloth masks and against surgical masks. It allows us to answer the question do masks help? Are people wearing the right COVID masks?

As a Microbiologist and Mechanic, here is my take on Masks. Would you like your brake lines in your car to be 10% or 15% effective? That would mean, your brakes are useless. Which means, you have no brakes The same logic applies to face masks. Cheap Face Masks are absolutely USELESS. 100% isolation would require a positive air body suit and even that is no guarantee. Pick one. 0% or 100%. There is no middle ground over the LONG TERM. And, wearing the same cheap mask day after day, does one thing, it insures upper respiratory infections from chronic exposure to a petri dish that is ABSOLUTELY detrimental to your health.

Oh man, you guys in the comments below are paranoid and approaching the lunatic fringe. Yes, the CCP is an evil authoritarian regime and potentially a future threat to humanity. But the USA is no choir boy. We're the No.1 state-sponsored terrorist organization in the world currently. That's how the rest of the world views us and for good reason, while we in a fish bowl, believes we're all for human rights, and the 'police' of the world. Who the f gave us that title and authority? In the USA, the only shit that matters is money. It gets you power. Every alphabet agency is influenced by the corruption of money. It's not a Red vs. Blue thing, not even a White vs. Black thing. And definitely not a Communism vs. Democracy thing. It has been and always will be, the Rich vs. the Poor. The 'haves' vs. the 'have-nots'. We are just as dirty as the CCP. You truly believe the CIA is a philanthropic organization? LOL! Another prime example is the Mossad of Israel. Everybody believes they are the high horse and justified and righteous. If anything the COVID pandemic has exposed, is how untrustworthy ALL government and politicians are in the USA and the West. The WHO motivated by CCP funding. Fauci deceiving the American public and trying to cover his tracks to the Wuhan Lab. The profit motives of pharmaceutical companies capitalizing on the crisis with the collusion of the Trump administration. The wealthy grabbing what they can to bail themselves and the banks out, while telling the American public to go f themselves, you're on your own and deserve to be. The elderly should go sacrifice themselves for the economy. Etc. etc. Wake up, we're expendable. More Americans died than all the wars combined since WW2. 4+ million died worldwide, and that is a low count due to lack of transparency from the CCP.

Don't see any of them sickly or any worse than they were before. They are all malnourished as you would imagine. They eat whatever they can find in the bins. Well while most homeless become addicted to drugs, I figure their immune systems have taken so much and been worked so much while not being bombarded with antibiotics thus giving their immune systems an upper hand at naturally killing off a disease/virus that might otherwise kill or cause someone to become severely ill due to living an overly sterile lifestyle. Because those people who always use antibiotics and vaccines never let their immune system work alone, so their body adapts to antibiotic assisted help (not saying you shouldn’t use any kind of antibiotics, just limit them). We know a lot about masks and what masks to use for very specific types of protection. Check out OSHA standards for working with chemicals in both ventilated situations and in confined spaces. The mandates are chemical specific and procedures are stringent. How do biologists protect themselves when working in a bio lab? Have you seen their suits and masks? With this man made pandemic the powers that be have chosen to throw all of that knowledge out in lieu of producing mass hysteria and fear. They've chosen the role of dictators and are experimenting with "how much will the general populous take before rule and authority looses it's grip on them." Australia is a great example. Why would they use particulates of .3 to .5 microns for testing the masks when the virus is .1 micron? Why not use .1 micron particulates? I'll tell you why, if they used .1 micro particulates they would go through those masks like water going through a spaghetti colander. Their study was flawed on purpose. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that an 8mm bolt won't fit into a 7mm hole.

All that protection is useless once the virus is released into the public. Unless you plan on wearing a hazmat suit and breathing oxygen from a tank, there is no point to wearing masks. The best thing to do is to build natural immunity. Masks need to be replaced every couple of hours because they become breeding grounds for all kinds of mold, fungus, bacteria, and viruses. But most people wear the same mask all day. Some wear the same mask for several days in a row. I think most people are dying because they develop some form of pneumonia from the mold on the masks.

Also most people including some doctors and nurses DON’T use masks properly. People wearing masks : 1. Touch them regularly - note hands touch lots of things 2. When you take of your mask. Some people put them in their pockets, purses, some place them on tables etc. pockets, purses have many other items including phones that people use and place all over the place including using the phones in the bathroom. 3. It's funny, because other deep thinkers such as yourself use that fact as a reason that masks are worthless. The point is that people in close contact are protected because the virus does survive long enough to infect. But as usual, the one minor failure is reason to throw out the entire thing. People still die when wearing seat belts. Funny how, when they were first mandated, the auto industry claimed it would destroy the car companies. Still, it's a good idea to dispose of them properly, so I'll spray my masks before tossing them. Precisely! Can someone show me one empirical peer review study that examined how well these common masks worked at protecting the people from covid viral infection? Masks spread the disease and cut off viral fighting immunity! Truth must be sought - not from bureaucrats or corporate sponsors, but rather from the preponderance of the peer-review empirical evidence regarding mask wearing. Why not to wear a mask: 1) Smallest hole in the best filter, N95 is 0.3 microns; yet the virus is 0.15 microns 2) Mask causes people to touch face more, thereby increasing risk of exposure/infection 3) Mask turns off viral fighting immune machinery! Upon weighing the evidence, it is clear that masks do more harm than good. Reason: the bacteria collection the mask harbors shut off your viral fighting immunity [FACT: Th2 (humoral) immunity which is needed to fight bacteria produces IL4 & IL10 which shuts OFF Th1 (cellular) immunity which is needed to fight viruses!] They are used by surgeons because the temperature is controlled to minimize bacteria growth; and, the masks are replaced every few hours. The operating room air is highly filtered, they don’t move around much, they don’t touch them and they don’t stuff them in their pockets or handbags. Physicians are not permitted to touch the mask outside of the nose bridge and ear loops - If they touch the mask elsewhere, they are to discard that mask. The medical evidence caused cloth masks to be banned - Only specialized medical masks manufactured with antibacterials are permitted. Obviously, surgeons wearing masks don’t rush around wearing their masks while shopping - That would promote bacteria spread and growth. The bacteria in turn shuts off the immune systems viral fighting machinery. Per the preponderance of the empirical evidence none of the masks prevented viral infection, (and the boxes they come in say-so)! Cloth masks would require suffocating layers of additional cloth to prevent transmission of germs so their use was banned in the 1920s! Fiber masks - the ones available for sale to the public - are not nearly as protective as surgical masks. The box they come in clearly says they will not protect the wearer from viruses! Scientific meta-analysis shows that the N95 respirators and surgical masks show no benefit against the transmission of acute respiratory infections. Additionally, the empirical evidence has clearly illustrated that even the surgical masks do not prevent the transmission of viruses. [The best masks, N95 can only filter out down to 0.3 microns. However, the corona virus is 0.125 microns in size.] Refer to following empirical peer review citations: Konda A, Prakash A, Moss GA, Schmoldt M, Grant GD, Guha S. The authors concluded there have been farther transmissions of virus-laden fluid particles from masked individuals than from unmasked individuals, by means of leakage jets, including backward and downward jets that may present major hazards. A study published in 2015 in the British Medical Journal by C.MacIntyre, H.Seal et al, entitled, A cluster randomised trial of cloth masks compared with medical masks in healthcare workers found that penetration of cloth masks by particles was almost 97% while penetration of medical masks was 44%. The inhalation of synthetic fibers from the masks causes various bronchopulmonary diseases such as asthma, alveolitis, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, fibrosis, spontaneous pneumothorax and chronic pneumonia. [paper published by Boris Borovoy, Collen Huber and Q.Makeeta - see download] Today bacterial pneumonias are on the rise. Thousands of years ago, it was discovered that forcing people to wear masks covering much of their faces broke their will and made them subservient. Fauci, many at the WHO & CDC, the US Surgeon General, the Association Of American Physicians And Surgeons, and countless others said not to wear masks. CIA torture techniques include forcing people to remain isolated (as in lockdowns), to keep their distance from others (social distancing) and to wear masks. It is clear: masks are being used as a conditioning tool to make us more compliant. We are told that fines for not wearing masks are going up and the military will be brought in if the police cannot cope. The empirical studies are all provided in this following download. www.vernoncoleman.com/harmthangood.pdf Video: brandnewtube.com/watch/proof-that-face-masks-do-more-harm-than-good_5Ya8cJN5eCT3vqj.html Effectiveness of Adding a Mask Recommendation to Other Public Health Measures to Prevent SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Danish Mask Wearers. In the USA currently 13% of the population has been confirmed to have got it. Of course a lot more have had it than has been confirmed as in the beginning of the outbreak there was no test and even when the test was developed it was only used for serious cases. The CDC estimates the USA has had 120m cases already which is roughly 30% of the population. Only 41m cases are confirmed though. All that said, masks are not the answer. Cloth masks provide essentially no protection and surgical masks limited protection if used properly which most do not. But hey, at least we look like we are doing something.

Some simple math: According to this data, IF, hypothetically, 100% of people in a country all wore SURGICAL-masks, all 100% properly(something impossible to achieve) this would only lower the total # of infections by 10-11%. And since the death rate from Covid is something like .2%(if I recall) you'd be looking about 10% of that, ~0.02% of the population saved. That's still a lot of people, but that's by a virtually impossible preventative measure(not the one actually imposed.) It's about five orders of magnitude less than what I think people expect. If you ask people on the street, they'll _probably_ say they think mask-wearing is saving the lives of 50-90% of the population, no joke. That has been the extent of media and govt. propaganda. In reality, if surgical masks are worn by 10% of the people, and 40% of them wear them properly, then we can estimate 4% of the people properly wearing surgical masks, right? Multiplying that 4% by .02%(death prevention from wearing surg-masks properly), we get *0.0008%* of the population's lives have been saved by the actual Mask Mandate policies, before taking other considerations into account, such as the those that follow: -This study did not test whether other respiratory or non-respiratory illnesses might have gone UP, due to mask usage, which could bring the net affect of even surgical mask wearing down to nil or, very plausibly, to a negative value. (There are reasons to expect that this might happen.) -This also doesn't tell us whether the rate of respiratory infections might have gone up *after* the end of the experiment, to levels *higher* than they would otherwise have been, due to a weakening of the immune system from having been isolated from minor airborne pathogens, which stimulate antibody production(that's how the immune system works.) This, too, could easily render the effect of even surgical mask wearing net negative. -And this does not even take into account that close to 100% of covid fatalities are among elderly people with co-morbidities, a small portion of the population that could be protected far more effectively and efficiently than by masking the entire population. -What I have outlined here above, simply explaining ONLY data presented here and by the CDC, is what _reasonable people_ have been saying the *whole time,* _for which_ they have been fired from their jobs, banned from social media, derided as dangerous 'conspiracy theorists' who are 'getting people killed,' and pronounced to be spreading 'lies and misinformation,' by mysterious, mostly unnamed and unaccountable 'fact checkers.' People assume that doing science just gives us more and more accurate understanding of the world. But the truth is, even correct science can lead to a worse understanding of a situation, because scientists don't ask ALL the questions. They just as one or two questions about something, and find the answers to those, ignoring all the possible counter-dynamics if the context. To have partial information can be a lot more dangerous and counter-productive than to have none at all.

It is disappointing that cloth masks show so little benefit, and as noted, even the cloth masks studied seem likely to be somewhat better than the bandanas and such some people are wearing. Still, there's a real limit to what one can conclude from this one, as-yet-unreviewed study. It's reasonable to say it's evidence masks may be less effective than had been hoped. it's far from proof masks are useless--and much less worse than useless.

CDC was clear from the start that cloth masks offer very little protection to the wearer so yes, the biased view of self-centeredness is correct that cloth mask offer little protection to the wearer just as the CDC originally stated. But for people who would like to reduce the amount of virus they spread to others cloth masks absolutely do help. There are photographic tests showing the vapor coming out of people when breathing or coughing is reduced as is the distance expelled outward. And cough masks do stop large droplets. Same idea as covering your mouth when you cough. That's not just being polite, that's reducing the amount of spit you're throwing into the faces of others. Ask your Grandma, she'll remember what being polite was.

@@MrWaterbugdesign there was a study done on cloth and paper vs N95, I can't remember the study name right now but the conclusion was that N95 offer excellent protection whereas the cloth and paper masks could put out _more_ of a viral load. While counterintuitive, the hypothesis was that viral load built up through regular breathing and then was expelled at once when the wearer coughed or expelled air in an exaggerated manner (eg. Shouting). This is because tiny particles of paper or fabric would release from the mask, whereas N95 are made to a much higher standard. The study was done by having participants speak, cough and shout into a sealed container with a sensor to detect particles. If I find the study I'll link it for you so that you can critique it, but if it's true that means a lot of people have been yelling at others based on some very questionable science.

@@markhuntermd how do masks turn off immunity?

  • @markhuntermd

    @markhuntermd

    2 жыл бұрын

@@wowsean - Here we go: Our immune system has three primary modes of operation.* 1) Bacteria Fighting Machinery - a system that primary fights bacteria; 2) Viral Fighting Machinery - a system that primary fights viruses (and cancers); 3) A system for fighting germs that never seem to go away. If you understand this fact, you clearly know more than most US physicians and their handlers. Here is the key, and to understand the key, is to understand the CAUSE and the CURE to many instances of ‘autoimmunity’: Only one of these systems can be operating at a time! For example, if your body contracts the common flu, your body fires up the “Viral Fighting Machinery”. This system has the means to look around for viruses, detect your cells that have been infected by viruses, and to kill them. Suppose your body is busy now fighting some common flu viruses. In many cases, (maybe most cases), human gums are infected by about half a dozen or more extremely dangerous bacteria. One of those bacteria’s is typically of the strep (streptococcus) lineage. Once your body starts fighting viruses, it is unable to fight bacteria very well. What happens next is that the strep germs are free to multiply and thus, you develop a case of Strep Throat! So, a viral infection will make you vulnerable to bacteria infection; and, vice versa. If you wear a mask over your face, and fail to change it really, really frequently, this mask will collect a great variety of very dangerous bacteria. And without the immune cells living in that mask, those bacteria will very quickly multiply. [Various bacteria in many (most) human gums include Streptococcus species; and, Prevotella spp in common gingivitis. Additionally, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis are frequently associated with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP). Parvimonas micra, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter rectus, and Eikenella corrodens are also associated with periodontal disease.] As those deadly groups of bacteria multiply there in the mask, your skin and lips have a system to detect those germs, (dendritic cells). This will initiate the Bacteria Fighting Machinery (Th-2). Once the Bacteria Fighting Machinery lights up, you are unable to deploy the Viral Fighting Machinery necessary to fight the covid virus! So, if covid comes around, you are totally unprotected! Ironically, Fauci coauthored a journal article with the Infectious Disease Journal elucidating how this caused most of the deaths in the 1918 Flu Epidemic. I suspect that is why Fauci was originally against mask wearing. Read it yourself: Role of Bacterial Pneumonia as a Cause of Death in Pandemic Influenza: Implications for Pandemic Influenza Preparedness; The Journal of Infectious Diseases, Volume 198, Issue 7, 1 October 2008, Pages 962-970, doi.org/10.1086/591708 Later studies clearly stated, “It is clear that masks 'merely' serve symbolic roles”. See: Universal Unmasking in Hospitals in the Covid-19 Era. N Engl J Med 2020; 382:e63 DOI: 10.1056/NEJMp2006 So, why can’t you have two immune systems running at the same time? I’m glad you asked that question - It means you are hard-core and gung-ho about knowledge! Let me lay this science on you - And I hope you can Dig It Man! Viral (cancer) machinery has a wild-assed scientific name: Th-1 immunity. Sometimes called T-helper cell one or ‘cellular immunity’. Because our masters don’t want science to be easy! Bacteria fighting machinery is called Th-2 or T-helper cell two or humoral immunity. There are two chemicals that your body makes to turn-on Th-2 (bacterial fighting) machinery: IL-4 and IL-10. IL stands for “interleukin”. Yup! “Interleukin” is yet another wild-assed and unnecessarily complicated term. Now here is the thing to know: IL-4 and IL-10 turn OFF Th-1 (viral fighting) machinery! That is a fact! On the other hand, IL-12 and Interferon-gamma are two chemicals your body makes to turn-on your Viral fighting (Th-1) immune machinery! And as you might have guessed, IL-12 and IFN-gamma turn-off Th-2 (bacteria fighting) machinery! [The Third arm of machinery is different. No time to talk about that right now.] So, there you have it: You can only have one of these machines on at a time: Either you are going to fight viruses, or you are going to fight bacteria. Not both. That is because one turns-off the other! In summary, the mask collects and multiplies bacteria from your mouth and gums. This causes Th-2 (bacteria) fighting machinery to fire up. And this Th-2 machinery blocks the operation of your viral fighting machinery (Th-1 or cellular immunity). So, for your own safety, take that damn mask off Yo! * NOTE: I am speaking really broadly here. In some cases, I am being overly-simplistic. For instance, Th-1 viral fighting machinery also will fight one set of bacteria called, ‘intra-cellular’ bacteria (eg, Bartonella). Those little guys live and hide inside your own cells. Because of this extraordinary phenomenon, your body needs to use Th-1 immunity to find and root it out. BTW: Imagine cases with multiple infections by various germs. For instance, in chronic Lyme disease, the patients develop infections by several bacteria (including Bartonella), protozoa and so on. These patients are really screwed because the immune system is not well developed to fight different types of germs. Same for people with cancer. You get a patient with cancer and suddenly he becomes more vulnerable to bacterial infections for the same reason: his cancer fighting immunity (Th-1) turns-off the bacterial fighting arm (Th-2) of immunity! The implications of these facts are enormous, lead to unresolved infections and autoimmunity, and much more. Sadly, the American’s are largely unaware of these facts elucidated way back in the 1980s by the Italians - Science which has grown wildly in scope and breadth over the years!

I don't know if anyone else pointed this out but there's a basic error wrt statistical significance at around 6:33. As there are two treatments in this study, to achieve a 1 in 20 level of significance of any treatment in this compound study, the p-value threshold needs to be about 0.025 for one of the treatments rather than 0.05. To see this, suppose there are 100 treatments rather than 2. Purely by chance it is very likely that at least one of the 100 would achieve a p-value of less than 0.05. For two treatments, the proper threshold is 1-sqrt(0.95) or about 0.02532.

Go see the patient when you left the room you'd wash your hands and thrown the mask away. And use a new mask every time you when into the room. People wear these masks put them in their pocket or car and just reuse them. At this point they are just bacteria traps. You really are better off not even wearing one if you just use the same one over and over.

The filtration rate of the mask is largely irrelevant. Even with a surgical mask, some air escapes around the mask. There's not enough air escaping around the mask to let people breathe properly, but that escaping air is going to send unfiltered air into the atmosphere. Before my health failed (in 2015 and 2016), I had to be fit-tested regularly to wear a respirator. The test involved wearing specially-fitted respirators that would allow a technician to compare the particle density inside the mask at the filter inlet versus the particle density in the ambient air. We knew that the filters worked. The point of testing was to certify that we knew which size mask to wear for our faces. The testing was to detect leakage around the mask. If they would do that kind of testing using surgical or cloth masks, I'm sure that they would see that neither kind of mask has much real effect on preventing viruses from reaching or escaping the wearer.

While this study is important, the biggest concern I have with it with respect to other studies which have said various forms of masking do work (provided some minimal standard is applied) is that the studies I remember skimming through measured instances of the disease of Covid-19, not strictly instances of *infection*, that is to say, *not all cases of infection result in quantifiable cases of Covid-19*. The masks may not have lowered the viral count such that the virus was not passed, but the viral loads may have been lowered enough such that severe disease instances were lowered.

At 40% adoption there's still a lot of covid infected droplets floating around to be breathed in, even by people wearing masks. What we can't know from this study is if there's a percentage of mask adoption that changes the infection rate non-linearly. The video conclusion seems rather biased, in my view.

There was 34.7% decrease in people 60+ and 23% in 50-60 range. - Typically, people who need the protection. There was no statistically significant decrease in under 50. I only skimmed this paper and I am not sure whether they address an age/compliance correlation or not.

Since we already know, or would expect, that low filtration masks provide limited benefit, I would have liked to see a 4th group using N95 or KN95 rated masks. This is where we would likely see a more pronounced difference. That is my opinion, but I would really like to see some scientific testing and results.

If wishes were fishes. It's extremely difficult to get good data on a large sample size. Even here less than half of the people counted actually participated. With a logarithmic function behind the spread that almost makes the data unusable on its own. I do agree, though. I also think one massive benefit of N95/KN95/K94 is that for the people who wear them, you rarely see them wearing them like a chin strap or constantly pulling them down every time they want to talk. Like Dr. Fauci watching Trump public safety briefing, it's hard not to touch your face every time you see a nincompoop doing what they do. How many people have been infected by facepalming? The world may never know.

@@NeilMortimer I got a real chuckle out of your facepalming comment. Back when masks were mandatory it really annoyed me to see guys wearing their mask like it was beard protector. Or, teh people who had to remove the mask to talk. OMG, people can hear you just fine with the mask on.

You will get no effective filtering protection from paper, cloth or medical masks, they are either for filtering particles like dust and droplets or for collecting spit. They simply were never designed to filter out something as small as a virus. A virus is invisble to the naked eye, the air around you is host to all kinds of microbes you breath in and out all the time. To filter out a virus is to filter out air itself. Think.

@@BryanTorok Most people that would wear them on there chin did so in defiance of the mandates. The masks make it hard to breath so people didn't want to wear them. Mandate says you have to wear them so they put it on there chin. Mandate should have said properly or not at all. However some were just that stupid.

@@darnoc0010I think the people I was referring to fell somewhere between lazy and stupid. From March through July of 2020, I was recovering from shoulder surgery and in physical therapy 2 to 3 times per week at the local hospital. I wore a made-in -USA N95 mask while vigorously exercising for 50 minutes. Those are tougher to breathe in (and a lot more effective) than the cloth or paper masks most people wore. Later I got some Chinese KN95 masks that have similar filtration, but are even harder to breathe through. So, I understand not liking the masks.

Thank you for this. The idea that somehow they (government) believed that 100% compliance with any mask is so crazy. Believing that everyone would properly use a mask each and every time is just nonsense.
