AMEN!! Loved him in "Kill the umpire" and in the TV show "The life of Riley". Very good at picking roles that he was made for. I have never seen a bad movie with William Bendix in it. One of the best!

Love this movie. Interesting re the sheriff telling the insurance agent he smoked too much. Dennis died from lung cancer at the age of 60. He was in fact a heavy smoker as were many actors of this era. Anyway, this is my third time watching.

Love a good ending, and it wasn't forced. Well written. Well acted. Good thinker film.

When you say “how great America” was back in the day but it wasn’t so great for all segments 😢 nonetheless I try to ignore that and just enjoy the movie. I’ve loved these since early 60s 😊

Always liked Dennis OKeefe. He could do drama and comedy as well. He was very handsome too.

This is a nice unexpected combination of mystery, comedy and romance. The small town boy makes good and returns to a small town hook was a plus.

Thanks for this. First I'd seen or known of it, although I'm a longtime fan of Bendix and O'Keefe.

Don’t listen to the negatives. This is a great movie

1:11 the way the bus driver grins throughout relaying the news of the suicide ... times were different back then.

Great pipe smoking movie! Sharing with the YTPC!! (KZread pipe community) Great pipe spotting movie!! Identifing brands and shapes!! Men in suits and ties and hats! No bums!! No dirty tee shirts, sweat pants worn by big boompa straoompas!!

Okay, this is a good movie! This one has a great story line, film quality is top notch, it's one of those plot thickens kind of movies, good directing, great acting. A true Gem. A must watch.

Film and sound quality are great. Well written fine film. Enjoying it very much.

Good movie. Reminds me of a case where a whole town took care of a bully and protected the killer.

Dennis O’Keefe and William Bendix in a Noir? Count me in!

There was a big fat bully in a little town in Missouri many years ago. He was shot down by several, maybe most of the menfolk of the town. To my recollection no one was ever charged for the murder.

That is, it could eliminate a particular weapon, but not establish definitely that is was the one that fired the round. Also if there was a headstamp, while not conclusive, if identical, would be incriminating.

pretty good film for 75 years old.. especially liked her reflection while replacing the Luger.

I JUST LOVE THE DEEP DIRTY SECRETS OF A FAMILY LIFE! MOST OF US HAVE LARGE FAMILIES. MOTHER, FATHER, SON , DAUGHTER OR TWO DAUGHTERS OR TWO SONS. AND ONE OF THEIR CHILDREN IS ONE WHO IS SO CLOSE TO THE FATHER! AND BY BEING CLOSE HE OR SHE CAN"T LET FATHER GO TO JAIL! NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES OR DID!

Frank was singer Russell Arms, who was one of the singers on the 1950s TV Show, "Your Hit Parade".

Pretty good.

20,000$ in 1949 is the equivalent of 250,000$ in today's value.

A funeral on 25 12 maketh no bells light up trees but a walk in guest keeps suddenly forgetting because that phillip aint his father

(1) The sheriff reminds me a lot of the actor who was in "The Life of Riley". (2) The insurance guy is terribly addicted to smoking, which is life-threatening, but he treats it like a subject for joking about.

Hilda, recognize that voice from Billy Wilder films.

So to recap a man was murdered and they all had a merry christmas, very very bizarre ending I'm not sure if I like it but it was somewhat entertaining.

I’m 20 minutes in and the sheriff and that whole town could have tried just a little bit not to come off as if they were guilty 😂

Imagine, if this really good picture had been colorized.I hate what they are now doing to these really great old movies, with their exaggerated colors.

Smoking was heavily part making of movies. actors from that Era and passing away to soon. sad they didn't know about the effects of to much Smoking .and used of safe way of non cancer cigarettes . And still have that great mystery movies look

Dick Van Dyke smoked for many years and he's 99 George Burns too

The insurance inspector bears a striking resemblance to Dana Andrews.

The continuity was off in this movie oddly but the story was a good one on a bit of vigilante justice when nothing else worked as is often the case when one or more malevolent weilds unjust power over the rights & peaceful lives of others. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this. There is an actual case file of a town where this exact kind of thing happened where a man had terrorized everyone in the town for his entire adult life & yet never paid any significant price for any of his crimes against anyone. Went on year after year until finally he was ended by an unknown person. As much as investigtors grilled the townsfolk they couldn't find a single witness or sufficient evidence to single any one person or persons out to charge for the demise. To this day it remains justifiably unsolved & that evil remains in the ground where he should have been long beforehand.

Not "A Christmas Carol" This Smallville's Ebenezer Scrooge doesn't get the chance to redeem himself for Christmas in this thoroughly cynical version. "Hark The Herald Angels" indeed! - -

So, the end justifies the means. The beloved doctor, the murderer, kills someone just because he's a nasty person. And is revered as a saint.

That tree was a disaster. The set designers threw that one together.

As everybody said, it was a damn good movie but, Dennis O'KEIF? Of Thirtynine Steps, Sherrif of Fractured Jaw, etc? Sorry guys I still can't place him 🙏
