I grew up in S.Texas, in a town very close to where George was growing up. I knew him. I also used to hang out at some of the "honkey tonks" where he first started playing. Saw him on the side of the road one day (I was about 20/now 62), changing a flat tire. I stopped and helped him out. We talked for a while about hunting and horses. Cool guy. PURE country boy, like I was. This was before he got "well known". His band was playing, one night, at a place called "Kicker Palace" (Poteet, Tx), and he bought me a beer for helping him with the tire. Good memories!

Texas legend. George Strait was called at the last minute because a headliner was unable to make it to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was playing honkytonks back then. He road into the old Astrodome on horseback, dismounted onto the stage and became the king of country music.

My Dad left my mom notes every day! He would write on a paper plates, napkins, anything he could find until we bought him post-it notes lol! After the mirrors… refrigerator or where ever he would stick them would get overloaded she would take them down and put them in a box! He passed away 3 years ago and at his funeral she has put a photo album together of her “favorites” She takes a few out of this the box everyday and reads them! They were married 33 years so you can only imagine the number of notes she has. one of my last memories was him singing to her and slowing dancing with her in the kitchen! Something he did just about every night! He fought cancer for 15 years and would always say that in case he couldn’t dance with her tomorrow let’s dance one more time!

How it got his start? Years ago at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo, a famous band was suppose to play. But for some reason they couldn’t make it. Those in the organization were scrambling to find another band to play. Someone said they knew a band they thought would come and play. They gave George and his band an hour to get there! They did, and it’s been said the crowd went crazy! And from then on it was only upwards that their popularity went through the roof. Sorry I don’t know all the details, but that’s how I remember hearing it. Glad y’all liked him! Great reaction. 👍

George is that man that you described. He and his wife have been together for at least 50 years and there has never been any bad press about his personal life. George writes about things he knows including the rodeo life. George was a team roper in his 20's and actually has a team roping competition which he started with his brother that is held annually. You will not find a bad George Strait song. He has released over 44 albums, 11 of which are compilations. He has had 60 #1 hits in his 33-year career. He still performs even now. A lot today's country stars were both inspired by him as well as baffled because George just stands there, playing guitar while singing. He doesn't move around a whole lot and that hasn't changed throughout his entire career. He is a true iconic legend and deserves the title King of Country Music.
