Couple Inherit Mansion Then Slapped With £6,000,000 To Pay In Tax | Country House Rescue | Abode

Ойын-сауық

Ted and Sarah inherit a beautiful home in Cornwall. Previously owned by a “reclusive widow” who banned even her relatives from visiting. However, they didn’t just inherit the house but £6,000,000 to pay in inheritance tax. With the estate already in an unkept state, the couple have the mammoth task of fixing up the estate so that they can raise money to pay taxes. This is why they’ve recruited the help of a business woman, Ruth Watson. Can the couple save the estate? Or will this inheritance be the worst thing to happen to them?

Tax man always has to be paid straight away as far as I know even if you have to borrow the money to pay..more expense with huge interest. It's as if governments want people to go under. When you think how huge these estates were and now some of them have mo land left. I know an estate in Ireland which belonged to a friends family. When her mother grew up here in 1800s there was 25000 acres..today all that's left is 1 quarter of the house ( the other 3/4 was knocked to avoid daylight tax which was calculated on the amount of windows in a house...and 175acres. Another estate beside me has gone from 2500acres to 150acres. Its owner a famous business man has added a lot to the house and bought 100s of acres around it as these farms come up for sale. We're going back to large estates but this time the landlords are Irish and give hardly any employment. The little employment there is is given to shipped in people from foreign lands and they're probably paid a pittance but the only few good paying jobs ate given to Irish but you could count them on 1 hand. At least with the big English landlords they employed so many. Even smaller estates could have at least 20 people employed and a lot also provided room and board. So they call it progress but I've actually got my doubts with so many looking for work and a roof over their heads.

So was doing as much on their own (vacuumig minutes before the press came) as possible and going to a local decorator instead of someone who was more widely experienced. I am so happy to learn that they have made a great success of it all.

It's fine that Ruth wants everything modern and beige contemporary, but not everyone likes that. The people who own this are your normal, run of the mill village people. They are not the super rich who come with all their attitudes and demands. The villagers were fantastic, and they will surely support the new owners as much as possible. Just word of mouth advertising can go a long way in getting the word out about this lovely place. In due time, it will all come together. The blond lady in the blue jacket has wonderful ideas, but all I see are dollar signs every time she has an idea. Top notch designers, paint specialists, etc. all cost a fortune. The work needed here is very substantial. Where is all that money coming from? They may not have it to spend. What a dilemma.

Oh that was such a display of not being able to handle criticism that is for your own good and emotional immaturity, No one loves criticism and also not everyone is an interior designer. That was disappointing to see but Im happy to hear that they've succeeded since then

Bless this family, they understood that they were out of their element and reached to Ruth for help. Hopefully they have learned how to style grand, it’s not an easy style in the modern age with most modern styles that are geared towards streamline and mostly neutral palettes. These things takes trial and error, so having those with experience really helps saves them a lot of errors when making decisions that could set them back. Glad the family pulled through and was easy to work with, understandable with the family past tension of why they hesitated taking on the project, but the building certainly called to them and they reconsidered together to try to make it work. So far, it seems it has thankfully for everyone.

I wonder why there isn't better estate planning to pay for the inheritance tax...usually people carry life insurance in order to cover that cost or use some other strategy.

I don't know why Ruth has to be so rude to people. To call the owners formerly "paupers", to make a snarky, condescending crack about " the little woman haberdasher from town", and to say that the outdoor seating arrangements look like it belongs at a youth hostel shows a lack of class on her part.

What a strangely austere facade. It's forbidding looking, and even stark. But the grounds are magical and if they can get the interior to be warm and comfortable, it's got a spectacular location and hopefully they've done well with it.

My issue with some of these shows is that these people call in Ruth to HELP them because they are unable to do it on their own, then do not listen to her or get upset with her. Why did they have her come? Free advertising to be filmed? I get very upset watching professional advise that WAS ASKED FOR being ignored. Ruth has more patience than me. I'd probably have a recorder that played "you asked for my help so listen to me!" And walk out. I guess that is why she is the host! Lol [I have tried to be sympathetic and look from their side but in the end, I always come back to: "why ask for help if you will not listen to it?" Obviously if you see them now, they did what she said and are very successful. How much time and money was wasted trying to do it their own way? ]
