​@@GIGroundNPound I've been doing well in grad school, forced myself to not buy it until graduation because I would probably play it nonstop for a week. Please enjoy it for me in the mean time, friend.

I like how there's some semblance of legitimate love (of some cold, distant kind) the Vampire Counts still have for their nation and people. Regardless of how inhuman or how they express it when the people of their land are under true threat they will rise from their graves to defend them. Even in the End Times some of the Counts will side with the humans they sometimes protect to stem the unending flow of Chaos and even other Vampires.

Well, that may in part because they care for their cattle (I mean they need humans to live on), and because many followers of chaos hate the Vampires. Chaos is ever changing, and vampires change never. And they (especially the Lamiah for example) have their own long-time-plans of the world to come, and they are not in harmony with what chaos wish.

@@kglguy no, but Vlad is actually pretty damn heroic when there's someone else to fight, granted, the minute there's not an existential fight to the empire, he's the greatest threat to it, but, he really did stand up and save the empire a whole bunch

Whilst I despise the way End Times was done overall, that Vlad came in to help save the day, fighting back to back with Louen Leoncour against Festus and Kugath, and refused to move aside from protecting the Imperial Palace against the Glottkin despite being nearly alone. The Emperor even formally recognised him as the true Elector Count!

I always find it so funny how much an Irish dudes gothic book ended up defining popular culture and a real area of Europe. Ask most people about Transylvania and you are more likely for them to think it's a fantasy realm like Sylvania, and not an historical province of modern day Romania.

@@libertyprime6932 Even in Dracula if you read the book it’s made clear Dracula wasn’t always evil. He is a Vampire which is a corrupting influence. So by the time of the book he is pure evil, but they make it clear he fought courageously against the Ottomans. And was once a great man.

If anyone is interested more about Sylvania, i recommend the Vampire wars trilogy books. They focus on the vampire lords, first one on Vlad, second on Konrad and third on Mannfred.

Meh by book standards its pretty by the numbers, disappointing by black library standards as its an interest time period in an interesting part of the old world with interesting faction but the book itself if outdone in the telling by the faction summaries in the rulebooks which it was quite plainly based off. Mordheim gives a better look at the state of the empire at the time and the vampire counts themselves are done a disservice by the bland writing and appalling characterisation it also fails to live up to the many references as to the state of sylvania under vlad. One gets the feeling that the author did only minimal research into the lore and that the plot could easily be superimposed from or to any by the numbers fantasy setting.

Vlad the Chad vs the Virgen Mannlet

Another poetic couplet to describe Sylvania could be "That which is not dead can eternal lie/and over stranger eons, even death may die". No matter how many times they try to stomp out the undead and vampiric curse on that land... it always comes back.

There can be only one ruler of the undead. He does not serve.

Big Daddy Vlad will always be the Eternal Elector of Sylvania

There was one part left out of Vlads story. His wife, Isabella Von Carstein found that an immortal life without her husband was too much sorrow for her to bare and so she impaled herself on a wooden stake and withered away hoping to join her beloved husband in the afterlife. While Vlad and Isabella were evil beings, their love for each other was true.

i would give anything for a skyrim like game in this universe

Vlad: the best vampire count and vampiric ruler of sylvania. why the hell did they exclude him from age of sigmar.

Nagash only got him to resurrect and work for him in The End Times because he was separated from Isabella in the afterlife and was desperate to reunite with her. He successfully rescued her from Nurgle in a big dramatic self-sacrifice in the last battle, so really nowhere else to go with that plotline. They got a great subfaction in the Total War timeline though.

Dude became an Elector Count, was a Vampire so never would have gotten the throne, so waged a war to try to get it. Makes for a good story and it doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

@@widdershins5383 Nah. Skaven aren't terrifying in that way and the Empire wins battles against them sometimes. The Empire knows skaven, i.e. ratmen, exist. What it doesn't know is that these ratmen aren't just some weird variant of beastmen and that they actually have a vast under-Empire that spans the globe and touches every aspect of Imperial society. THAT is the secret the skaven work hard via bribes, assassinations, and etc. to protect.

I would like to point out that it was the Ostagoths that originally inhabited the lands of Sylvania and that they were allies of Sigmar and the last Tribe to join the empire during the unification period of the empire. They fell victim to green skin attacks and during the events of the night of the living dead (the events in which Nagash came to seize his crown of power) the lands were all but desecrated by the undead and most of the inhabitants slaughtered. Most of the Ostagoths who were slaughtered were risen into undeath and the few who remained became corrupted by the touch of Nagash's influence. The vampires that remained in the empire after Nagash's third and final defeat (until the end times anyways) were forced into hiding and found sanctuary in Sylvania. Specifically, the Strigoi and the descendants of Khaled Al Muntasir's Lahmian bloodline found haven in Deadwood. Following the black death, peasant revolts and the ever present sects of Necromancers and hedge-witches.. The land became steeped in death magic. Over time, this attracted Vlad Von Carstein and his blood-line who then infiltrated and corrupted the Noble houses of Sylvania. Namely, Vlad married the count's daughter Isabella and this solidified his claim over the land. The fact that the Ostagoths and their descendants (Also known as Grave-Guards and barrow wights) were ever-so present in their barrows made taking the lands very easy.

His reign was a golden age for Sylvania, where they became the most prosperous (though never the most populous) imperial province and Vlad himself was equal parts just as he was harsh, a benevolent autocrat if you will and the Sylvanians being a insular, collectivist and down right reactionary people harsh suited them just fine and the fact that it fell on more than just the peasant class was just the icing on the cake. This was also during one of the more tumultuous periods of imperial history. Vlads successors royally screwed the pooch however.

To this day I still wonder what would have happen or Vlad became the emperor? I mean I don’t think the citizen would have been the happiest same for the other elector count, but an empire where necromancy is legal might have had bigger chance at fighting chaos. But overhaul i m afraid this would have bring more ennemis than allies especially when it come to dwarfs and elves.

I was just reading Vampire Slayer last night. Definitely the best characters in the whole Warhammer Fantasy setting.

This will be a regular clip to watch annually around Halloween.

Whenever I play as Empire, my first big goal was to reclaim Sylvania back to the Empire.

For some time I've had this idea for a Warhammer Fantasy fan fic about a Chaos Robin Hood character who terrorizes the countryside of Brettonia. The basic character sketch is that he began life as the scion of a minor noble family who had well-intended visions of social reform, lifting up and ameliorating the backward conditions of the peasants. This, of course, flew in the face of the kingdom's prevailing cultural norms and his family is murdered and his fortunes and lands confiscated. The young man somehow escapes, fleeing for his life, broken and disillusioned. In his wanderings, he falls into the ministrations of a Tzeentchian Chaos sorcerer, named Ashurim Witchclaw, and goes forth leading a peasant warband on a campaign of plunder and revenge on the nobility. I never did anything with it, but that's the premise.

There was a Robin Hood character in the 5th edition Bretonnian army book, named Bertrand the Brigand. He led a group called the Bowmen of Bergerac (or something to that effect. It's been a while since I looked into it) and preyed upon corrupt nobles. It should be noted the 5th edition Bretonnia was waaay less grimdark than the subsequent 6th edition version, so he was dropped.

I recommend reading the Vampire Wars trilogy. Grim dark is putting it lightly.

Ok, I get that to a European, the first association Sylvania brings to mind is probably Transylvania. But to an American, the first association is Pennsylvania, and the idea of that being scary is very funny.

Sylavanians are a tough lot and always have been even if the time after vlad was particularly bad. They are also highly insular to the point where many speak the ancient language of their ancestors and not a lick of anything else, don't have mass communications (or indeed any) so don't much know about how different things are a village over let alone outside the province, they are also so welcoming of outsiders and openminded that they'd give the Dunmer of morrowind a run for their money. Their international reputation is that of of extremely foul tempered potential mutants who are just dandy with fighting side by side with the zombies of recently massacred civilians and ghouls who made a meal of them and kowtow to bloodsucking fiends who want to eat your children. In short there are groups of greenskins (hobgoblins mostly) who have a better reputation (and thus reception) than sylvannians do.

Also they are dirt poor and don't have pack animals nor anyone to sell them to in the first place.

Perhaps my favorite region in WHFB, Sylvanja has forever been a blight on the Empire.

Same, they are the thing which really defines the Von Carstein bloodline. Guess we are stuck with the Botet mod as things stand.
