I actually just did the second round of testing. I must say that some of the parts of the exam are extremely tough, you literally need to be superhuman to be able to ace all the tests, especially the radar simulation which also involves doing calculations at the same time in the matter of seconds. I think everyone should just apply and see how far they can progress. I have done lots of tests and this one was by far the hardest bunch of tests I have ever experienced.

When you make a mistake at work, you will kill 1 man. When the flight controller makes a mistake, sometimes even more than 200 people disappear! You can sometimes relax in an armchair at work. If the light comes on at night, you get up and there's no problem. When the flight controller falls asleep in a chair, it is not the light bulb that lights up, but the plane. Take care of your business. We all appreciate you as well as your job especially in this day and age. Stay healthy and good luck to you! ;-)

If you are in the US I'd recommend getting your SEI (special experience identifier) through the military. I became dual qualified Tower and Rapcon by enlisting in the Air Force and getting picked up for the 1C1XX (ATC) billet. You can go to the recruiter and you don't have to commit to anything until you are signing the enlistment contract knowing exactly what job you are getting in the military. You can talk to an Air Force recruiter and tell them you only want ATC and wait until that billet opens and you get picked up. I did a 6 year contract which ends in May and I plan to apply for the next FAA prior experience bid (I don't have to pass any tests other than the occupational personality assessment and medical because I already have multiple SEI) but you can also get a 4 year contract now. If you decide to apply for the off the street bid it's a bit tougher and more competitive but regardless I hope you are able to pursue ATC because it is such a rewarding profession.

    1. Not all planes are controlled by ATC, some fly in uncontrolled airspace. 2. You are not born an ATC, you train to do it, potentially 18mths in total before you get your initial rating. 3. You don't need to be super-educated, I know people with an aviation degree who failed, others with no degree passed. 4. If considering this as a career, research Airservices Australia and its culture. Staff are poorly managed with low morale.
