Could This Improve My Performance?... // A Bike Fit like a Pro-Cyclist!

For the Past 6 years I've been riding countless different bikes all over the world and all I usually do is guess my saddle height and ride. The last (and ONLY) bike fit I ever did was on my Canyon Aeroad, SIX YEARS AGO! Never any issues, never any discomfort. (nothing worth mentioning) So, no big deal right? Why change anything, I don't need a bike fit.... BUT, what if it could improve my performance on the bike? With Haute Route Alps as my main goal I wanted to optimize my position, test different Crank length and also test my new Assioma DUO-Shi pedals against my original Assioma DUO powermeter. Would there be any difference from the change in Q-factor? Will shorter cranks actually make a difference to my position? In this bike at Bioracer motion fit I got the answers!

    If you have the SRM Carbon cranks from Look the trilobe can be adjusted from 170-175 in 2.5mm increments and then you can go to as many bike fits as you like without having to buy new cranks

    I did not have to change the cranks, I suggested it myself in this case. You can always go with what you have, but some riders fit is so bad that they are getting injuries in a later stage. (A 2,5mm crank length difference probably won’t cause this!) So a bike fit could prevent more problems in the future and than it’s worth it! If you are like me, the performance is worth it. If you are comfortable on your bike and ride it for 6 hour rides without issues, you probably don’t NEED a fit. But it can probably not hurt to do one. (Like me!)

    Great video! I'm doing a lot of the same with me new Shimano equipped Aeroad. I've switched crank arms from 172.5 to 165 (I'm 183cm) and as a result moved the saddel back 'cause I can't get a longer stem, and am enjoying it. Unfortunately my other bike is SRAM AXS Red so I can't change the crank arms like I did but, that's hardly a "problem"

Also cleat and insole has massive role to play. Plus everyone is different and if applying computer tech. It is worth noting that it is only as good as the person applying/interpreting the info. @@jasperverkuijl So looking forward to you HR Alpes video. I was always OTB so I'm excited to see what was happening with all the fast riders at the "pointy end of the spear" where you were riding/filming! Overall, it was such a stellar event with so many great people there... I was destroyed at the end (of course, chapeau to the TDF riders who make Col du Télégraphe to Col du Galibier look so easy on TV) and I'm so glad we got that opportunity to chat about bikes, flying, life in Europe and get that short recon ride in before the crowds descended on Megève. Good video jasper; you made me think about crank lengths aswell now; but as a tall guy it’s not a common option to go for a smaller length. All bikes with larger frames have 175 standard. But i could see what it did to your position (less hip movement). My bike fit is 3 years ago, so maybe in a year or two another one.

  • @jasperverkuijl

    @jasperverkuijl

    The industry is messed up on this part. 10k bikes are sold with only 1 option, which would be wrong for a lot of people. Many many people are riding with the standard cranks which are often too long. Id recommend to buy shorter cranks separate and just mount them. The extra little money (compared to a complete bike) is worth it in the long run

  • @Stevenafoe

    @Stevenafoe

    4 ай бұрын

    @@jasperverkuijl indeed; they shouldn’t sell bikes without a bike fit anyway; have the fit done, then get right saddle / cranks etc. The industry going to internet only is not good (but if the would only send out frames, give the opportunity to choose accessories at /after the bike fit, that would be a good option). Your bike fit guy is right, people only see usage for a bike fit when they have problems or injuries. I feel great atm on the bike, but that would mean there’s no room for improvement (like you showed). But, being close to 1.90m 175 might be right for me (my wife wouldn’t be happy if i snatch her shorter crank, lol).

    I'm normally racing my rusty omafiets and I'm not sure how they would react if I bring it in 😂 But what I was missing is the handlebar height. I normally ride verly low, which might be less efficient but saves a lot on aero (thus dropping carbon roadies on said omafiets) and I would have thought that that would have been a bigger part of a bikefit. But a very interesting process!

  • @jasperverkuijl

    @jasperverkuijl

    4 ай бұрын

    Yeah for me the height was good so no change. Yoo low is actually not aero. Your arms should be horizontal when you’re on the hoods and go very low with upper body, that is the most aero position legally possible. (Not in the drops) If you put your bars too low, your fore arms will still be angled down and have more resistance than when they are horizontal

    The fit focused a lot on stability, and with the motion capturing we could see the changes take effect. How does riding on the road compare? I'm thinking the bike is able to move side to side while pedaling and that may cancel out some of the instabilities - or make them worse. Did you talk about that?

  • @jasperverkuijl

    @jasperverkuijl

    4 ай бұрын

    Yeah I asked if it’s possible to do a motion capture like this on a loose rollers trainer for example, but than it’s impossible to differentiate between natural movement of bike bike saying left right and movement of body parts due to certain fit. Some factors need to be fixated to get a result. Joanie transfers to road? I performed great in haute Route. But I can’t say I notice a world of difference as I’m an easy adapter and ride so many different bikes all the time. (Hence I never had any problems prior yhe fit) It’s hard to say how much “energy I would save” because it’s impossible to measure.

    Goeie vraag. Mtb is lastig omdat die Q-factor sowieso erg breder is dan racefiets door de breedte van het bottom bracket. Maar verder zijn de afmetingen als stack en reach vanaf trap as te meten en dus over te nemen op een andere fiets. Ik heb een rapport gekregen waar deze afmetingen instaan om het bij een andere fiets in te stellen. Het beste is echter om elke fiets apart “in te meten” mbv een bike fit aangezien de afmetingen kunnen wisselen per fiets en toch dezelfde waarden in stability ed kunnen geven. @@jasperverkuijl it is cheaper, but more time consuming. And I had to buy a lot of stems between 35 and 100 mm. 😵

    Bike fits are completely overrated. The only exception is aero position on the TT bike.

    Mmmm, tell that to the people having injuries due to a wrong bike size or 175mm cranks on a small bike…. I honestly think there is a good reason for a fit!

    I see a lot of people in the comments saying, that because of this video they want to do a bike fit, some even at bioracer. While there is nothing wrong with it, I think people should check their would-be bike fitters for their qualification. Sven Van Den Hout (from bioracer) for example is an ex pro bike racer with an education in civil engineering (so like buildings and streets and so on), which does not really inspire trust for me. I would certainly not like to have a medical examination by someone who went to the doctor a lot because of sickness, and a pro racer does not necessarily know a lot about pressure on contact points and the interplay of limbs in motion. I'm not saying, that Sven does a bad job (because I certainly know nothing about bike fitting), or that he might not picked up a few things, but the video shows him like "red is bad, let's just change something the software says".

    Yet the world tour pros come to him to get a bike fitting. So I’m reassured he’ll probably know what he’s doing.

    Looks a bit like bs, I think you must be aware of your confort and your body on the bike

    Ok, so everyone with an injury because of a wrong bikefit should blame his own awareness and should be able to come up with a solution without a bikefit?🤷🏼‍♂️ Marginal gains are made at a high level. You need certain tools to get to the best results. Imo a bikefit like this is a tool
