Could there be a gold mine? The history behind a castle sitting in Death Valley National Park

Scotty’s Castle was built in the middle of the northern Mojave Desert in 1922. Hidden in the oasis of Grapevine Canyon, its walls hold many stories. Kelsey McFarland reports.

Visited Scotty's Castle twice in the early 60s and thought it was amazing! I've been all over the world and now reside in Vietnam, but I still love Scotty's Castle. If I ever return to the states I would love to visit it again! It's an awesome place in a beautiful area!.....SAM ADLER

I've been going to death valley and Scotty's castle since I was a little boy,.. .. I've always been in love with that whole valley,.. at age 13 I rode a mountain bike packed with camping equipment, and food and water from stovepipe Wells to Scotty's Castle, about forty miles,, in one day, and it was in very hot... Over 100° The next year we did it on a moped,. . . . . . which was so much nicer... .. I was lucky enough to happen to arrive there just after the big 2015 flood, enough to see the last leftovers of some puddles and drying up mud just beginning to crackle.... It was awesome to be there at that time but I wish I had been there during the huge storm that came through, it's been a lifelong dream to go there during hot desert storm,... Just a couple years later I was lucky enough to catch the most random thunder and lightning storm in death valley during 100-degree weather,, at night,..... ... and the roads suddenly became a giant hot tub, and I was walking down the street,,, in shorts and no shoes,,, splashing around in the dark having the time of my life, one of the best things I've ever experienced, hot rain, hot water, and peaceful beautiful lighting in the distance..and in Death Valley.......it was awesome.. ... That place feels Like home...

That sounds a bit dangerous. Flash floods can easily kill a person

I snuck in there in 2016 to see the damage myself. It took 8 years? EIGHT YEARS?! Pretty much sums up why our tax dollars don't go very far.

I ❤ Scotty's Castle!! The gold mine IS the castle or was Albert Johnson, who had the funds to build that complex. Sure would be awesome if the Park Service would finish the pool!👍😁💯💖

You've heard of the Sierra Madre Casino. We all have, the legend, the curses. Foolishness about it lying in the middle of the City of the Dead, buried beneath a blood-red cloud. A bright, shining monument luring treasure hunters to their doom. The world's most famous stars and entertainers were invited to its Grand Opening. An invitation was a sign of... exclusiveness. The opening was supposed to symbolize a road to a brighter future, not just for the world... ... but for all who came to its doors. A chance for anyone to begin again. Except - the Sierra Madre never opened. The war froze it in time, like a big flashbulb going off. The Grand Opening - one big ending of humanity. It's still out there, in the Wastes, preserved, just waiting for someone to crack it open. But getting to it. That's not the hard part. It's letting go. ”- Elijah

It's barely 100 years old. That's infantile history. Give me the Malta madness of geopolymer , hahaha😊
