The practicalities of large scale war come down to logistics. The Star Destroyers could sit in orbit and strike factories, rail heads, sea ports and runways and they win. No matter the courage or POSSIBLE tactical advantage of Terran militaries, as soon as the Empire's ships hold the orbitals, there is no winning the war. :(

@@Explodingtntfan I genuinely don't think any Terran militaries have a developed capacity to take down large targets outside of very low Earth orbit. ICBMs don't actually have very powerful rockets, in space terms. And their targeting systems really aren't set up for orbital targets either (probably). To add to the problem, nukes aren't great as space weapons, they would have to detonate in contact with the hull to do real damage. Could Terrans develop that sort of anti-spaceship weaponry versus high-orbiting targets, absolutely. Could we do it while under observation of a hostile force, without that force destroying the necessarily-large rockets first, I don't really think so. :)

@@nathanramage1275 I am not an expert, by any means, but I don't think that the explosion from a nuke will be very effective in near vacuum, unless in pretty-much-direct contact. And I would assume that a space-faring warship is pretty well armored against small debris, even moving at orbital speeds. But, again, I think the real problem is primarily range. As I understand them, ICBMs really only have the power to loft their payloads into sub-orbital or very low earth orbit, as that is all they need to create the necessary range. Once there, the warheads are un powered and un guided, and simply wouldn't be in a high enough orbit to reach the Star Destroyers. *shrug* That's my guess, anyway.

ICBMs don't just launch their payload up, they travel sort-of horizontally, minimizing time in orbit as to avoid detection, while also heading directly to the target. If you pointed an ICBM straight up, you just saved a shit ton of fuel that you can now use to go straight up.

The biggest issue with the infantry section is that you’re forgetting the entire Imperial Army. The Stormtrooper Corp is technically a part of the Imperial Navy, but functions much like modern marines, being deployed planetside. The Imperial Army is, well, the army, and consists of different units and divisions, such as an Engineering Corps, Army Air Corps, Assault Armor Division, Artillery Corps, etc. The Army is better suited for ground operations than the Stormtrooper Corps, so I don’t know why they would be doing anything much more than policing and holding captured areas. Also it’s worth mentioning that earth can only make so much ammunition, and faced against a galactic force it will eventually run out of resources without outside help. If the empire wanted to take earth they would likely hit key targets from orbit, like radar stations, air defence grids, naval bases, etc. then jam all communications. Then they’d take over the Middle East which produces almost all the world’s oil, and would offer much less resistance than a large nation with a massive modern military like the US or China. Then it’s just a matter of whittling down the other countries with its galaxy amount of reserve troops. If the Rebel Alliance doesn’t come in to help earth, or at least take advantage of the Empire’s situation to hit key targets to take pressure off earth, then earth will either run out of resources and be taken over without a real military threat or be carpet bombed when the Empire decides we aren’t worth a years-long campaign.

Agreed. I think the Empire would just fly a small fleet, including a couple of Star Destroyers, into orbit then proceed to annihilate a major city in a couple of minutes. The they might take out a few pieces of key infrastructure (like our satellite networks -which would be easy pickings for TIE fighters), and give the people of Earth an ultimatum. My guess is that the reason that space battles happen at such close range in Star Wars is that countermeasures are employed that make fighting at close range necessary. All the Empire would need to do, to greatly diminish our war fighting capabilities, would be destroy all of the artificial satellites around the Earth. My guess is TIE pilots would make quick work of those.

Seeing a more cohesive, disciplined and tactical force, he might see the writing on the wall and realize that Earth would be a better ally to the Chiss than the Empire. I'm sure he'd be thrilled at what our engineers do with the tech salvaged off of all the Imperial junk that gets blasted out of the sky.

Trying to fight the Empire would be a nightmare. Their logistical advantage and ability to deploy for deep strike is absolutely overwhelming, and even the walkers, relatively crude as they are, are basically immune to any kind of rough terrain. Sure, a TIE is slow. But it can travel radical distances without requiring refuel, which means it can be in the air MUCH longer. That matters a LOT when you're dealing with air power working from "orbital air craft carriers." Additionally, the name of the game is *combined arms.* Dogfighting TIEs while they make your ground forces' lives miserable gets MUCH harder with a Star Destroyer pummelling everything in sight

Logistical advantage? They're literally fighting a war on another planet. Earth is the supply hub for humanity, whilst the Empire relies on vulnerable craft bringing in supplies. And the walkers are not "basically immune to rough terrain". Cliffside? Mud? Jungle? Can't do anything. And it's still a fuck-off massive target that is visible for miles and easily targetable. As for TIEs, we don't know how far they can go. In space, it's practically infinite. In atmosphere, they have to constantly use fuel, and that's never explored in the films. Regardless, modern jets can go for thousands of kilometers, and likely wouldn't be going across the planet, so it doesn't quite matter anyways. As for star destroyers pummelling everything in sight? That's just it. They can only shoot what they can see. Artillery reliant on the weather. Not much of a victory when you can't get any troops on the ground, is it? For a final note, who the fuck would be dogfighting TIEs? This isn't the 60s.

Stormtrooper armor is entirely invulnerable to even 50 cal weapons. You could have rifleman shooting at the stormtroopers and, unless they hit the joints, they're doing zero to that stormtrooper. The same applies to every level of the imperial military save maybe tie fighters. Imagine fighting an enemy where their soldiers can just leisurely walk towards your squad, tanking every bullet you put down range where a single blaster bolt kills you. Imagine fighting a walker that shrugs off every tank round, artillery shell, and missile thrown at it and just effortlessly one-shots your tanks with a single blaster cannon bolt. There's a reason you never see projectile weapons used in SW and it's because they're so out-dated that even the most advanced projectile weapon is nigh worthless against armored soldiers.

You're over rating earth soooo much I reckon this is what the empire would need to conquer earth 2 Star Destroyers, multiple TIE fighter and some ground troops to use for occupation when it is over. First, destroy every satellite on earth, that gets instantly rid of any non-cable communication methods we have as well as GPS and, since it's in space, we can't do crap about it. Then, start the bombardment. Even if an ICBM manages to get into orbit and hit a destroyer (which I don't think would do anything because shields are a thing and ICBMS aren't precise to the meter, much less without GPS or other navigation methods) but, even IF it worked, and a destroyer was taken down... Then just give the order, screw it, this planet is too backwards, glass it, the destroyer would retreat into a higher orbit from were no weapons could touch it and give an ultimatum, surrender or face total surface annihilation. Imperial Win. Even if they decided for some reason to use conventional methods like ground troops and aerial dogfight they would still hold the edge over us. They have likely an army of millions with thousands of air fighters. Now, admittedly TIE fighters would go down rather quickly (tho they probably have some sort of long range radar to detect stuff like missiles so it is kinda dubious if our famous missiles would be able to hit them at all) but as soon as the units with shields get in, we're screwed. For ground units they can just use Russian tactics and flood us with men, men with good armour, canonically good aim (remember what Obi Wan said about Stormtroopers being great marksman? It's just that heroes often have meters thick plot armour that deflects blaster fire) and they have bacta and other solutions (so downed soldiers could be brought right back into action in a matter of minutes or hours rather than weeks or months) Overall their tech skill is way too high for us to overcome, especially in stuff like prosthetics and other methods, if a soldier loses a leg here on earth, that's it, he's no longer able to fight but if a stormtrooper loses it he can get a robot one and be back to the battlefield in a day. About hacking... Maybe? Except that, what you all seem to miss, is that they don't use USB, or standard computing, they're from a galaxy far far away, why the heck do we think they're gonna use normal computers?! We'll need to first study their tech and coding If we want any hope at all to defeat their cyberdefense and that takes time. Time that we'll not be given, because the empire will crush us. (As an example, the rebels can hack into imperial systems quite easily... Because compared to them they at least are on the same tech field, we're trying to compare our computers to those of an empire which has figured out FTL flight, galaxy-wide colonisation, cloning, etc...) So I ask again, what hope do we have? If I had to say, this will be looking less like an actual war and more like War of the Worlds, our entire military struggling against a vastly superior enemy and failing at it for a while (tho in this case we may actually be able to down their walkers and TIE fighters given how badly they seem to be designed) Or maybe the 7 hour war from Half Life? Something like that probably.

One thing that I always come back to about being technologically advanced is that you might not be advanced in what matters. Look at TIE Strikers for example. It's just so odd. Here you have a plane with laser weapons, shielding, and ion engines. Yet it's still technologically inferior to something such as a MiG-21 or Dassualt AlphaJet. Even a B-57B. An A-10 Warthog, an outdated plane not even meant for air-to-air combat, would still smack it because the technology gap is surreal.

So I would wager that who is leading the charge. If we use the best Grand Admiral that the Galactic Empire has ever had, we wouldn't stand a chance. Grand Admiral Thwarn would use the Star Destroyers to target every single military installation and head of state building and just blow them all up in a quick orbital assault. Then he would send in his actual invasion force and subjugate the rest of the planet applying orbital assaults when needed. Also this isn't only done by him, in clone wars there were plenty of planetary invasions that followed this pattern. The reason why in the movies we don't see much of this is because in the movies the planets we see invaded do not have any discernible military strongholds.

To those who don't get this joke, let me explain it in an oversimplified way: The joke points out about how Earth/Terran Humans can adapt very fast compared to other species as well as non Earth Humans. The reason why Earthlings can adapt so fast is because of our habit on copy and pasting inventions really fast. Examples are... - Europeans making better versions of China's gunpowder inventions - Japan being able to copy the drill from European countries - The US allowing exiled German Scientists to work on Nuclear weapons during ww2 - The US copying the *Blitzkrieg* tactic from N@zi Germany Welp, hope this explanation is good Edit: and i had nothing better else to do other than write this unnecessary explanation.

With the Enigma, we developed the first computer. With nuclear bombs, we developed MAD. With long range missiles, we developed CWIGs and other active defense mechanisms. With heat seeking missiles, we developed flares. Every time a new technology comes out, we come up with something to defend ourselves or counterattack. Its not just the copying and adapting to the new technology, but adapting counters to that technology. Also with the OP, it also shows how much will our species has. We're fully aware that it will take decades to go arrive and there will be no help, but we are so confident in our ability to survive on an alien planet with no information of the surroundings and likely no survivable atmosphere, it's frankly scary to go up against people with that much confidence and will power. That's the manifest destiny of the stars. No matter the odds, we just keep marching forward until we have our freedom. We are not free, we are tyrannized by gravity, so we make a massive ship to overcome it. I grant you that Canon Star Wars is laughably stupid in how underdeveloped Imperial technology is. Take literally any ship from Legends though, and it's a whole other story. Do you know the primary reason ships fight so close in Star Wars? A lot of people like to say it's because turbolasers have very short range, but they forget a very crucial detail. The reason turbolasers cannot fire at great distances is never specified. They always say "we're out of range" or "we're out of effective range", not "our turbolasers won't effect them at this range" or something similar. So, if we want the actual reason turbolasers aren't useful at long range, we have to look at the Legends Canon reason why battles are so close. It's because the energy shields of capital ships produce a sensor fog that jams tracking, transmissions, and other ECM capabilities of enemy ships due to how the energy field is structured. Due to this, the long range targeting software that gunners use to target ships is unable to get a lock on enemy ships. So, to counteract the lack of sensor capability, ships have to fight in visual range in order to actually have something they can hit. They can't use their FTL sensors to hit things that aren't within visual range due to the jamming, so instead they're forced to use visual targeting which can only work up close. That's why turbolasers are ineffective at long range, because the automatic effect if how energy shields in Star Wars works prohibit any kind of electronic warfare and sensor targeting. Against anything we have, however, they have no such restrictions. So they're free to shoot at us from orbit or wherever.

Yeah exactly this everyone is saying "but muhh nukes" entirely forgetting that, even if we kill one ISD, the empire could just send another, then another, and so on. Not only that, but after the second one, theyd send an entire battlefleet because guess what, they wouldnt be so happy about it. It also doesnt factor in that we'd fuck ourselves over SO BAD. Depending on where the ISD is located, the radiation would slowly kill us, and thats still a massive hull thatll come crashing down on earth (but now also emitting radiation). "Yeah well we have guns so empire takes an L" If slugs were so good, why didnt the rebels use them? Simple, because Blasters are way better. Blaster bolts are cheaper, more accurate, and ammo is basically not a problem. Blasters are also a massive pain in the ass to deal with when it comes to healing. Healing is also another area where the Empire has the upper hand. Bacta is crazy effective, compared to what we are able to use. For us, a gun wound may take months to heal. Bacta does it in a fraction of the time. "Stormtroopers are inaccurate!!" People have tallied it up, and they are by far more accurate than our modern militaries when it comes to Shots per Casualty. They are literally highly trained Soldiers. Dont even get me started with Dark Troopers, which would probably be involved in small numbers aswell. "Well, the TIE is ineffective against our modern fighters" Yes and no. The main issue here is that tie fighters are so incredibly maneuverable its astonishing. They are also used in massive numbers constantly, so theres not just going to be one on one fights, but an entire squadron of TIEs all flying together, covering each other etc. Their pilots are literally the best the entire GALAXY has to offer. "We'll just use information warfare" This is a point i will agree, we'd probably have them beat. Although spies would be ineffective and we'd be entirely reliant on hacking them, and who knows how we will do that. We'd first need to capture a HoloNet capable device. We cant just use the good old Internet for that sadly. Then its a question of figuring out how their code works. All of that needs to be figured out first, but once that is done, then we'd probably beat them consistently. And then, there is the final trump card of the empire, something we will absolutely lose against. Nothing we can do about it. Palpatine, Vader, and then all the inquistors. Realistically, after we kill 2 or 3 ISDs, Palps would send Vader to take care of it. What does that entail? Well for one, we go from fighting run of the mill Imperial Army and Navy, to fighting against the ELITE forces of the empire. Better trained, better equipped, and just better in every way. Ex Clone troopers, who fought in a massive Conventional war, mixed with the best Stormtroopers out there, you then also have some of the best fighters out there, and even worse: An imperial battlefleet. Enough ships to simply bombard us, and just to make it entirely unfair, a SISD. These things are fucking cities wide. 16km is no joke, and they have the power to match that size. I havent even touched on Vader himself yet, who can move ENTIRE FUCKING BLACK HOLES. Vader was so powerful he could kill people without being in the same room as them. He was a Veteran of the clone wars, one of the best duelists the galaxy ever saw, is extremely powerful in the force etc etc.

TIE Fighters are at an extreme disadvantage in comparison to our fighter jets. Their design might make them extremely fast in space combat, but it would make them very slow and cumbersome in atmosphere since the big wings and the ball cockpit are not a very streamlined design and would make wind resistance/drag a big problem. Plus, the design of the cockpit means that the pilot can only see what's directly in front of the fighter whereas modern fighter jets have cockpit designs that allows the pilot almost a fully clear field of vision.

My takeaway from this is that if the Empire wanted to just occupy us it would be difficult, if they eventually saw us as a threat then KABOOM! Also you're forgetting that AT-ATs are heavily reinforced tanks with extreme firepower. Also there are also not just Stormtroopers in the Imperial Navy, Death Troopers are just better Stormtroopers, and they would certainly be brought in mass if that would support the ground battle.

The biggest thing is that we would be very capable of absolutely incinerating multiple star destroyers with nukes, the empire would have to immediately target cities and stick too close for it to be possible or worth using nuclear weapons. That, or they would have to incinerate the hatches to every ICBM or other nuke before we could even react. The star destroyers are specifically designed from pure energy attacks, with few being able to halt direct impacts (such as Death Star being unscathed by direct impact with downed ship), making nukes probably be very effective

A bunch of disadvantages the Empire has come from the fear-philosophy. The Storm-Troopers are not designed to not be seen. They are supposed to be seen and feared. Another example of this looks-over-practicallity mentality is the Star Destroyer design were the put the bridge, one of the most vital stations, on top of everything else were it was visible to everyone and very attackable. Much of the Empire's design choices says: "You have to fear us. We don't have to fear you. We are right here and you can't do anything about it."

Also, the weapon placement on ISD's is atrocious. The wedge shape should allow the vessel to concentrate firepower forward as well as to either side, (which would be really useful when operating in a fleet with supporting vessels) but it can't because the primary turret placement only allows for broadsides. Fractalsponge's designs usually correct this problem, but canon Star Destroyer designs lack centerline turrets in superfiring positions. Star Destroyers are for show, not fighting.

12:11 the realities of space combat is that vast distances (like tens of thousands of miles) are traveled within seconds. The TIE also has the advantage of not having to factor in g forces in their maneuvering (due to inertial compensators). No doubt the short distances that the TIE fighter seem to engage at in Star Wars are due to advanced counter measures employed by all sides that would render long-distance or medium distance missiles or weapons tracking ineffective at significant range, forcing the kind of combat that is seen in the Star Wars canon. I think the newer canon (such as Andor, Rogue One, and The Mandalorian) does a better job of demonstrating how tremendous powerful and fast these starfighters and walkers are.

if they invade earth we probably shouldn't expect stormtroopers to wear traditional anti-blaster armor what i mean by that is that 99.99% of the galaxy uses similar weapons, so isn't it worth switching equipment to deal with rocks or slugthrowers from a backward planet, but against a planet with considerable military might that depends on primitive technology? they would probably field a specialized army with much better protective equipment than what we have

The Empire in star wars is still using bronze age combat doctrine. Which is understandable in consideration of the place heroes and field commanders (jedi and similar) had in their society. Here on earth we quickly learned that it doesn't matter how strong, how competent you are, you die if you get hit in the head by a rock. Fron then we built around that concept.

you could say a star destroyer's shields would withstand a nuke, but a nuke would still severely damage a star destroyer when the light energy alone would turn your hull into plasma that your shield was supposed to protect you from. not to mention conventional weaponry that involves mass moving at a high enough velocity could still penetrate your deflector shields.
