Could Sweden's controversial COVID-19 plan pay off?

As other countries around the world go into lockdown, Sweden is taking a radically different approach to the coronavirus outbreak.
The elderly and vulnerable have been advised to stay indoors, but there are still plenty of people on the streets and many businesses remain open.
Sweden is an outlier, determined that it has a smarter strategy for dealing with the virus - but as the pandemic worsens, is the nation blindly heading for a cliff edge?

Swedes usually live quite so isolated and lonely, that's why they don't do anything to lock down the country. But immigrants in Sweden are not like that, and this strategy therefore affects them the most, as we can see from the statistics. It's a shame.

wouldn't a lower density simply lead to a more gradual buildup infection rate though. People still mix and go to the same places, travel, etc. Figures already show Sweden has a much higher death rate. They have one of the lowest number of ICU beds per 1000 citizens in Europe. Seems like an obvious correlation.

Population density is the number of people divided by the area they occupy as a whole. Sweden's population density sits at around 22-25 however the capital city's (stockholm) density sits at 4,800 per square kilometer. Results vary but people in urban areas would be at higher risk of infection then those in the rural areas regardless of what the country's 'population density'

That's why countries like UK, Spain and Italy are deeply affected. We see very social countries with strong family bonds where we meet our elderly on a regular basis. Northern people are lone wolves so the virus spreads slower but that's not an excuse to under estimate the danger of this pandemic. Sweden will pay a steep price.

This is not true.. I live in Sweden and we dont live like normal at all. It’s only the smaller children’s schools and daycare that’s still open. No big gatherings, everybody with any symptoms stays home. Young healthy people with no symptoms try help the elderly with grocery shopping. 1,5 meters distance in the stores and restaurants that are open. Risk groups stay home and don’t meet rest of the family. No sports, no cinema, anything with an audience is held without any audience or is cancelled. Easter is celebrated at home, no traveling to family. On the bus we have to enter in the middle to protect the bus’s driver. There’s no fitting room in stores open. We all take responsibility to not hug, shake hands or risk the elderly or sick. Most people at working much less, everybody who can work from home do so. In my town, if anyone is infected on a school for example the school closes. We are ok to go outside and to grocery shopping with the experts advise. Most people stay at home as much as possible especially if there’s a family member who’s in a risk group. Stockholm is the worst. But the rest of the country doesn’t have that kind of spreading of the virus at all. Where I live there is about 300 people confirmed cases, and we’re 300 000 people living here. In Sweden lives about 9 million, we have about 10 000 infected, almost half of them in Stockholm. The streets, public transportation etc are very empty in comparison to normal. Our healthcare is not overwhelmed, but in Stockholm it’s worse of course. The government is paying big companies 90% for 40% work time. Daycare at still open for the important jobs as healthcare, grocery stores, transportation, police etc not to crumble. If daycare and primary school is getting closed the government will offer special daycare for those people with important jobs. But everything under the term of social distance if ANY symptoms. And social distance for everybody over a certain age or underlying deceases that can be dangerous. It’s not controlled by the law or police but everybody is expected to take responsibility together. The plan is to slow down the spreading as much as possible so the healthcare can cope, and to protect people in danger zone under this horrible time. SOO many people have lost there jobs and companies are destroyed for ever. Some have no way to pay the bills and buy food. The economic aspect is important to so people’s life’s don’t get destroyed when we can make a lot of restrictions and many things before we close everting and do everything to protect the ones most vulnerable and slow up the process so everyone in need can get healthcare when needed. What people are saying here is just not true.

As a Swede i support the strategy. From my perspective it seems like most people are taking responsibility and making sure to limit their social life as much as possible. During easter for example, the main destination for Stockholmers on vacation is the island of Gotland and this year the region lost 96% of visitors during this period. Swedes has a tradition of beeing organized and willing to listen to the authorities. I don't like to speculate to much about things I don't know a lot about but it seems like Sweden will take a harder hit regarding deaths in the beginning because of the less controlled spreading in society, but eventually we will hopefully benefit from keeping our economy running. Lockdown seems like a way to postpone the amount of cases and deaths and I'm not convinced it will make a difference when we summarize it all. An economic crisis creates backlash when it comes to unemployment and socio-economic overall standard which for example leads to increased suicide rates. Perspective is everything and I hope that we are the ones handling this the right way.

Currently Sweden has four times as many dead as Norway per-capita, and the rate is growing rapidly. While in Norway, which has closed schools, gyms, bars etc, the infection rate is going down. Of course, this might change in the long run, but I suspect the approach taken by Norway and much of Europe, is way better than what Sweden is doing.

  • @EC-dg6ti

@@EC-dg6ti I haven't been able to find numbers that verify your statement. In Norway we have 1646 people over 60 who are infected, vs 4674 under 60, and the average age of people who have died was 83 years old a few days ago. For Sweden I've only found numbers by age for people admitted to intensive care and they had 202 over 60 and 382 under 60. That's 1.9 times as many under 60 as over, while in Norway it's 2.84 times as many, but the numbers are not really comparable as it's comparing those admitted to intensive care vs those infected, and considering that the virus affects old people much worse, the average age of people admitted to hospital will be considerably higher. That said, Norway did close down nursing homes for visitors early, which may have prevented quite a few elderly from getting infected...though we still have had outbreaks and deaths because of Corona at nursing homes, so it wasn't 100% effective. My numbers are from these links: www.vg.no/spesial/2020/corona/ www.svt.se/datajournalistik/corona-i-intensivvarden/

But let's confine ourselves for one minute to the USA. The first big outbreak was in Seattle, but Seattle seems to be over the top of the curve. Why is that? Why doesn't Seattle have the huge numbers per capita that NYC has? What makes Seattle different? Why is it that here in the Netherlands 90% of the Corona victims on IC is obese? The old number was 80%, but after further investigation it turned out to be 90%. In Wuhan obesity wasn't a factor at all. Why do they see in Wales lots if youngsters on IC, whereas in the Netherlands, where we have had Corona much longer, there are virtually no youngsters on IC? Different countries see different things happening.

How macabre that Sweden's controversial approach is being met with the muted hope that it backfires, despite the inevitable death of innocents who simply did as their leaders advised. Even on the scale of entire nations, outlier and radical decisions that deviate from the status quo evoke a negative reaction from the herd. "Who are they to make such rash decisions? Do they think they're smarter than us? _Are_ they smarter than us? Am I making a big mistake?". Once this is all over and the dead have long since been buried, this situation in Sweden will offer a fascinating psychological study of the human condition.

Rather the opposite is shown in the statistics. ICU admission has been stable for 12 days now and on Friday there was no increase in the total amount of patients in the ICU of Stockholm. The amount of deaths has also not increased exponentially, there was a backlog of cases that were added on the same day making it look like a big increase. They have since then gone back and added them to the correct day which shows a much flatter curve.

The figures are misleading. Testing for the virus has been restricted to people with symptoms that had been to an affected area at the beginning of the outbreak (ie China, Italy) and people that required hospitalisation. A recent study in Sweden where they randomly tested people suggested 5-10% of the population has already had the virus. That’s 500 000- 1 million people. If that study is correct and some kind of immunity is achieved (as with all other corona viruses) then Sweden’s approach is absolutely working.
