    It's almost like no one watched the Amazing Spider-Man films. He did indeed design his webshooters but the silk was sourced from Oscorp. The cartridges were made by Oscorp from genetically altered spiders, one of which, bit Peter. This made a lot more sense in the real world than actually designing synthetic spider silk but I'm a comic book purist (sort of ) so I liked the fact that he did that in Civil War. :D

    Well the string has to stick to a concrete/brick wall. The string might survive, but how strong is the bond between the spider string and the concrete? Or even the concrete itself, since it's gonna have to withstand so many newtons of pull on such a tiny spot.

    +Daniel Athayde according to engineering toolbox the tensile strength varies from 300 to 700 psi. (doesn't specify over what surface area) So would need to know that and then what surface area spiderman's web covers correct?

  • @danielathayde

    @danielathayde

    8 жыл бұрын

    AlexanderTheGreat91 I guess so, It was all speculatinon, I sucked at high school physics. But the thing is, if there was a layer of paint on a building, it would most likely just peel off when spider man pulled it with his string.

  • @jankfoot88

    @jankfoot88

    +Daniel Athayde exactly. if he was able to wrap it around a metal pole, and the web stuck to itself, he would have no problem. But if he hit the (for example) the vinyl of a house he would rip it right off. If he hit glass that was secured into the side of a building, im not quite sure what would happen. The web would stick, but if the glass didnt break, i think it would rip it out of its frame. I think.

  • @kevinwilliams9564

    @kevinwilliams9564

    Actually that's the thing, it's not usually a tiny spot but a bunch of interconnected tiny spots, dispersing the tension among several areas. Concrete could easily withstand it, that's why Spider-Man can do this easily anywhere.

    Someone else already mentioned the fact that spider webs stretch so that would change the numbers which you didn't cover. But what I think should also be discussed is the "stickiness". Multiple times he's shown catching things incredibly heavy i.e. a bus, cable car, buildings to stop a train and strictly relying on the surface tention to have enough grip to stop them. The web doesn't wrap around the items like you would with a rope or grappling hook so how much stickiness and surface area would be required to support that much weight?

  • @Everest314
    @Everest3148 жыл бұрын

    Another problem: Not only the spider silk would have to hold the force you estimated, but also the "connection" between the silk and the building or whatever he shoots it onto. Not sure if spider silk is adhesive enough for that.

  • @Tbrekke

    I remember reading the 80's run of the spiderman comics (my aunt was part of the team translating it for norwegian), and the thing that impressed me the most about spiderman was exactly the fact that he friggin managed to not only recreate, but improve upon the design of spidersilk. So he had small rectangular packets about an inch in length, worn on his web shooter. Now, the amount of spidersilk he uses per outing is pretty big, so I can see why the Toby Mcguire films decided on "nah, he's just got semi-magical glands now" instead of building a web shooter. Looking forward to see you tackle this.

    the fact that Peter Invented his web Fluid (and web shooters really) is kinda a Big deal, it's the part of his character design that's a constant Physical manifestation of his Genius, I mean in Earth 616 he has an IQ of 250, Reed Richards (the guy who figures out new ways to hop dimensions in his spare time) once said that Peter is as Smart as he himself was at his age! Reed Never said anything of the sort to Tony Stark, in fact Tony gets confused when Reed, Hank Pym and Bruce Banner get together and start Talking science in earnest, Tony Just flat out can't keep up with these guys... Translation: Peter's smarter than Tony, he just doesn't the Experience, Cash or spare time to do what Tony does... Heck during the Civil War comics Peter Hacked Tony's Mainframe like it was nothing, while Tony had actively set up protections against him specifically! That said, Peter's web fluid once it's out of his wrists is actually pretty close to real Spider Silk in Tensile Strength, well the basic recipe is anyway, Peter's made a few Variants for special occasions or Villain countering over the years. Such as Webs that Burn, webs that Electrocute, Acid Resistant webs and a bunch of others I'm too lazy to enumerate... Anyway my point being that the Webshooters are FAR more Efficient than an underground Spider Silk Farm, and more versatile to boot... that and spiders don't tend to play nice with each other, they're kill/eat each other if they get too close to one an others territory. Someone In real life decided to make a dress (looks like a poncho really) made from spider silk... it took them about 3 YEARS to collect enough silk to make that one dress, and they were being as efficient as possible considering how much space "Spiders farms" take up in order to avoid the spiders eating each other... now if Peter could do like Ant-Man Does with ants but with spiders, and he had a few million of them constantly Spinning webs, or some genetically Engineered super spiders designed to Crap out Absurd amounts of Silk in a Specialized High tech lab, then sure the underground Silk farm would work... but he has neither, so he'll have to make due with his far more efficient fluid brewed with his home chemistry set!

    Gabu - San that just makes his Invention of them even more impressive within that world! plus his Major is Biochemisty not Engineering L4v31d3m Personally I like to Describe Tony as a "Glorified Mechanic", not really a Scientist(at least compared to other Science Driven Heroes and Villains from Marvel)... But don't get me wrong he's a Super-genius of a mechanic, the stuff he builds is really advanced, but it's generally only enhanced versions of stuff that already exists in the real world: Armor, flight(Jet packs), Advanced Computers and H.U.D., ranged weapons(missiles, Lasers, tracers), Strength enhancing servos, his most impressive feat is his ARK Reactor which is pretty much just a suped up Battery and not a Reactor (since he's regularly seen needing to recharge it, if it were a Reactor it would CREATE power not just store it, though this varies by version). it's all impressive stuff, but compared to Inventing entirely new Technologies, Such as Pym Particles to shrink or portals to other dimensions or stronger than Spider silk Ultra-compact Webbing that can easily be shot 60 Feet away, Tony's inventions are kinda like a Fancy Modified Street racing car! It's a really impressive car, but it's not gonna compete with a Fighter Jet or a Teleporter anytime soon...

    There's actual science behind weaving spider silk for actual use. I had to do a research project in Biology in 10th grade. There's a company that is making spider slik applicable to be used. They take the genetic coding for spiders that allow them to produce silk and rewriting it into that of a cow so when a cow gets milked it's milk will also contain spider silk. They plan to make stuff like body armor seeing it's more lightweight than Kevlar and has the capability to have a higher resistance to stuff like bullets

(i do remember a comic where spider-man got his powers removed and he tried to swing, the comic described it as spider-man feeling like his arms where being pulled off, so i don´t know could a real human swing like spider-man or is that only possible in comics.)

    +Bhargav Sharma Well it could be that the shield actually has a threshold as to how hard it needed to be hit so the absorptive properties kick in. If it's hit with say, Thor's hammer, an RPG round, or a bullet, that would cause sufficient impact. Any impact lower than that then it acts like a spring. Another possible explanation would be that the edge of the shield is lined with another metal. If it were me, I'd line the edge with some sort of Titanium Alloy. Lightweight, springy as steel, very very durable too. Or maybe the orientation of impact on the shield matters? Maybe when the grain or molecular structure of Vibranium, aligned just right with the shape of the shield, an impact at the edge makes the shield springy instead of absorptive. However, springiness actually makes it less impactful towards the target. I can understand how normal humans can be knocked out by a metal object hitting them on the head regardless whether they're bouncy or not, but it did have quite an effect against the Hulk as well and the shield bounced well too. Maybe the shield can store energy (the granular structure tenses up and ready to "pop" when impacted the right way, say at the side of the structure?) and release it at the edge?

    More specifically. Depends on the weight of the Dragon and the size of it. Multi ton Dragons are likely impossible without wingspans measured in the double digits of meters. They also probably couldn't get off the ground without the necessary calorie intake, Which would be tens to hundreds of thousands of calories to sustain flights longer than a few minutes. Now if we're talking about a Dragon who is smaller, or their bones and flesh are made of lighter materials, then yes a dragon could fly reasonably with the wings they have, maybe. Depends. If they had the kinds of bones the Na'vi from Avatar had and their mass was suitably adjusted, then yeah, fantasy dragons should be able to fly, but only barely.

Almost had a stroke every time he says "parabolic". but even so, if the web is flexible (which he did not state at the begining of the video), I guess maybe it could end up parabolic, since the will be the greatest centrifugal (yes, centrifugal, talking on spidey's frame of reference here) force and thus more dislocation on the "spring" that the web would be... And he also says "arc" later on... consistency... -.-

    TheMadHatterThatMatters Those aren't spider-related or specific powers. Most super heroes have those abilities, as for being able to climb walls frankly any one can climb a wall provided it has something to grab onto. That said he isn't the only hero that can do that, not even in the marvel universe nightcrawler is usually shown being able to do it as well for example. The organic webbing is very specifically spider-related. It sort of makes sense.

    Please do a video on Spider-Man's web shooters, like you already mentioned. Calculate the force necessary to shoot the spider webs between buildings. Also calculate the adhesive strength necessary to hold the spider web to buildings. And address the localized adhesive properties of the spider web only at the ends, so Spider-Man can let go of it. And that the web doesn't lose stickiness at the end due to wind resistance and particles in the air that adhere to it as it is being shot at buildings. Fun video. Thanks!

    I think the reason for making synthetic webbing isn't that it's _better_ than real spider silk, per se, it's just that is the only way for P.P. (how often do you think he was called that in grade school?) to get the quantities he needs, and get it as small as he needs (compressed somehow in the cartridges). Another important question, though: given that there are two varieties of silk from any web-building spider (structural and sticky -- one makes the web, transmits vibrations, and allows spider movement, while the other actually catches prey) how sticky can it get, and how strong is the sticky part? We're assuming that random gargoyles and building bricks can withstand the forces involved in SpiderMan's swinging, but what about the point of contact for the strand?

    As for the photon discussion: there is a researcher who has found a way to slow down light through the manipulation of temperature: www.radiolab.org/people/r/?n=Lene+Vestergaard+Hau However, blaster bolts in Star Wars are supposed to be plasma, the 4th state of matter. That could be contained within a kind of magnetic field, since plasma is a mass of highly charged particles and responds to magnetism. Now, as for if the bolt would remain and not just dissipate as it hung there is science beyond my knowledge, but I think "because it's cool" was what the script writers were thinking :-)

  • @Leon3789

    +DragonofDarkness13 I honestly prefer the webshooters over organic because I feel the shooters bring something that is an important part to Peter that isn't shown much it seems, and that is how smart he is. Sure Organic webbing it cool, but a machine he built himself using fluids that he, again, made himself? It's actually a bit more interesting then just having webbing come out of his body. Add to the the shooters allow tension in not only giving him a limited amount but that they can break. They tried to do something like that is the Toby movies but it just came off... not gonna lie kind of stupid.

  • @DragonofDarkness13

    +Leon3789 I always felt like the Machine Web shooter was a plot convenient way of weakening Peter .. I mean how often does he use his webs infinitely , but then like a reverse miracle he runs out when the bad guy needs to flee. The Spider DNA fused with his but for some reasons Spinnerets wasn't part of the deal ? the Organic Shooters made him seem more like the mutation He was and less like a smart guy that has artificial powers. one thing to consider is that peter makes the webbing as a pressurized chemical that the bite "taught" him how to make (there are several cases in comics and show that the shooters are damaged and there was a explosion of webs) so its is "organic" he just lacks the biology to produce it internally

    Good luck to all you guys who want to harvest spider silk to become spider-man. Hope you know spiders don't like being near each other so you'll need a separate each spider if you want them to live and keep producing the silk you need.

    +King V-raptor You could always use Anelosimus Eximius, or one of the other 20 or so species of social spiders. That way, you could have upwards of 50'000 spiders all together without fear of them eating/killing each other.

    DraconasLyrr About those spider goats sure you get allot of silk but they take way too long turn into spider silk from web fluid(milk) to silk for you to use it in a fight. You would only be able to have pre-made ropes, nets and grabbling hooks and they actually are weaker than actual spider silk only 1/3 as powerful at best. If we try the quick dry silk it is only 1/10 at best and quickly loses its strength because it is not fully formed.

    There is actually some research being done on web shooters which contain a polymer suspended in fluid kind of like a can of silly string and when fired those polymers join together to form the long thin strands that we're all familiar with. So actual web shooters might not be that far off in the future.

    In the comics Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Spider-Man which is the origin of his wall climbing, superhuman reflexes and "spider sense". The only "power" he has due to gadgets is his spider webs.

    +Nerdist The analogy doesn't have to be direct in order to be similar or related. Your point in the end of the video was "there is nothing about Spider man that is spider related" But, Joan Walker, and a point I made in a different comment, show how the power's Spider man have are 'inspired' by spider abilities. Proving your initial point wrong.

    Fantasy Connect I don't understand what your comment has to do with my point? Can you explain? Because my point is Spider man's powers are in fact related to, through similarity, a Spider's abilities. The spider sense power's canon origins (Web of Life) have nothing to do with the point that the character's powers are based off real spider abilities
