Could Ronin 4D be the LOW LIGHT CHAMPION against FX3?!

DJI Ronin 4D made history when it came up with the first Camera/Gimbal hybrid camera! BUT what about its image quality?? Is it as impressive as its gimbal innovation? In this episode I’ll unveil the Ronin 4D’s IMPRESSIVE low light performance, how it destroyed the FX3 at high ISOs, and how it challenged cinema beasts such as the RED V-Raptor.
SPECIAL THANKS to my fellow filmmaker Dushawn for helping with the camera comparisons. Please check his channel and share the love: / @justdushawn

    Great video man! I've also told DJI they need to ditch that whole gimbal setup and make just a cinema camera. They would attract so many buyers, the limitations of the gimbal + lenses makes it a deal breaker for many.

    Thanks man, much appreciated coming from you! Yeah it makes a lot more sense this way: start with a cinema camera first with all those fancy features from the handles and wireless. Then follow through with the Ronin 4D. I'm sure adoption rate would've been MUCH HIGHER. Thanks again for the support

  • @mondobytes

    @@TohPhimmasenh it can already hold pretty much any lens when locked, the problem is now I’m carrying extra weight for no reason which means I can’t even use a gimbal because it’s too heavy now. This is exactly what happened on a shoot about a month ago. We wanted to use the Ronin 4D but the Mercury Lenses from Atlas were a tad to heavy so instead we used a Komodo X with a DJI RS3 Pro and worked much better. The gimbal part although a good idea on paper in real world scenarios doesn’t really work for many situations because you’re forced to use DJI lenses or smaller lenses from other manufacturers. The limitation is a deal breaker for many and if they made it modular just like the Flex system I feel the Ronin 4D could really stand on its own.

    I’m pretty sure what’s happening with the second native ISO is that it’s actually switching up to the second circuit at around 4000 but they make 5000 the native ISO so that way there’s an even amount of stops of dynamic range between the shadows and highlights.

  • @cammackey

    I learned a lot from this! In my mind though, the FX3 should only be operated at 800 and 12,800 ISO. Hence why we have Cine EI. So weather being compared to linear or other dual ISO, its pointless to be compared outside of its "base" iso's. But with all that said, the 4D image quality is amazing. From my own tests, it edge out the FX3 from everything from resolution to noice to dynamic range. Its a super underrated CINEMA camera.

    I would say the ISO comparison here should be taken with a GIANT GRAIN OF SALT, given that even if the FX3 at ISO 12800 is a noise score of 65, as you say, practically and scientifically speaking no one increases their ISO to measure the points of noise. We increase the ISO to boost the signal in cases were we can't compensate with additional light. So the most relevant fact here is NOT the 1 point (your scale, not mine) of additional noise, it IS the additional stops of signal light increased by the FX3's additional ISO's that neither the 4D nor the V-Raptor have at all. (Meaning they can't compete at all.) The fact that at ISO 12800 the FX3 has increased my signal for a negligible amount of noise compared to these two camera's only solidifies that the FX3 is better than both these cameras in low light shooting scenarios. I've personally seen very usable footage come out of the FX3 at ISO's well above 12800, which you can't even run that comparison. Further and far less arguable is that because of the physics of the sensors themselves, there isn't currently any technology that allows a 6k and 8k sensor to outperform a 4k sensor in low light without the sensors themselves being much larger than than full frame or maybe even medium format. It just doesn't exist.

  • @THEDPJOURNEY

    @THEDPJOURNEY

    Thanks for the comment, I don't agree on "Should only be operated at 800 and 12800 ISO". You saw how each ISO has a different DR for example, native is not always the BEST in everything, it might have a DR distribution that's not good for your scene, or even a lowrered DR. Let's also agree that other than native, it's mainly a gain algorithm applied by the camera, all provided it's shot in RAW. Finally in many situations, you migh tend up being stuck in a situation where no light or aperture will help in shooting in native, so you'll be forced to shoot off native.

  • @originimages4662

    @originimages4662

    11 ай бұрын

    @@THEDPJOURNEY I agree that there are lighting situations in which light or aperture will not provide sufficient exposure, most lacking adequate light and not being able to add more. In that case, you want a camera with the highest usable ISO, which when given the options from the cameras that you compared will be the FX3 or the FX6. In that situation that camera has the most light gathering available with a more than usable image.

    The X6 is much better value for money. The only advantage I see in the times nine is the OLPF filter. It also lacks many of the codecs from the X6 and the Native ISO distribution is way worse than X6. I don’t recommend it, even if it’s the same price as the X6. I honestly didn’t see a point to make an episode about it because of this and a lot more smaller stuff.

    Great video. I honestly couldnt be happier with this camera. When you break down all the things about the camera besides the gimbal, it is hard to beat. Pulling focus from the handle, moving camera head with joystick, blackmagic style screen interface(touchscreen and user friendly), the image!, pull focus on manual lenses(w/focus motor for ronin 4d) and calibrate to autofocus, switch camera mounts to E,M,L,or DL mounts. When you think about price and how much you would have to buy to make any other camera do all of this its a no brainer. Aprehension of buying is typically because of price, you are not sure and it looks weird, Your secretly jealous, or you think it has limitations on lenses. Well im hear to say every time i use this camera and show other filmmakers they are like "wtf! This is ridiculous and amazing". It immediately has that magic feeling you felt when you were a kid playing video games.

    Realy great video! BTW the second ISO is not just about resetting the noise, it's about ressetting the distribution of dynamic range stops back to around base levels - as we boost ISO you gain stops in the highlights and loose them in the shadows. Having dual native ISOs restets the spread of highlight and shadow information to closer to 'native'. That's why the noise resets at 4000 but it's not the designated second native, it probably doesn't have as much range in the shadows to be comparative to 800.

    Thanks for the comment, with that said, did you notice how the DR reset is happening in 4000, not 5000. there's a weird change happening there. So it seems their 2nd native is 4000 not 5000. Also their 8K sensor's second native is 4000 as well... so yeah, something to think about

    As with most dual ISO cameras the noise resets earlier than the claimed 'base' iso. That's when the camera swaps to the new gain circuit, not when the cameras dynamic range is at it's 'baseline' for what the company considers best for stops distributed under or above middle grey. At ISo 4000 it will have more dynamic range in the shadows and not enough in the highlights to have the spread considered to be the new 'native' level. @@THEDPJOURNEY

    Had to revisit this video again because of HOW good it is... Also needed some more motivation to finally purchase the 4D haha... But honestly man... Incredible work! One question... I know you talked about this a bit but is it really fair to compare 4k to 6k when it comes to the noise levels? I also wonder how all the tests on the 4D would look like when you do not film in ProRes RAW, since I will not be filming in RAW for the most part. Thank you so much again for this video! Instant sub.

  • @THEDPJOURNEY

    @THEDPJOURNEY

    4 ай бұрын

    First of all, thank you so much for the kind words, and for revisiting the video. To answer your questions, yes it is technically unfair to compare 6K against 4K when it comes to noise, but the massive difference I saw between both goes way beyond what I was expecting. Imagine the 4D has a 4K sensor with the same exact performance as the 6k, the noise levels diff would be at most 3% difference, 6k being better of course , but here I saw maybe what could be considered as 20%+ reduction in quality, the FX3 went way beyond the unfair range that you can’t really consider it. Maybe the more fair comparison would be with the FX9, since it’s a 6k sensor. But I can assure you it’s not gonna be much better. As for not shooting in RAW, that would be even more unfair and hard to quantify, since both cameras have very different kinds of noise reduction algorithms, making the results very unpredictable when comparing different scenes in different lighting, so basically you’ll be comparing how good or bad the noise reduction is, not what the sensor really gives you to work with Hope that helps

    I was just replying to another comment saying the same thing about the IMX410 actually. There's a whole tech circus the camera brand need to work on around the sensor to pull the flavor they need from it, each camera can tweak it to its liking, push and pull to find what they want to offer to us.

In H.264 or HEVC sony does a really good job in getting rid of a lot of noise while still retaining a somewhat sharp image. Not a lot of people shoot only RAW video. It would be interesting if you populated the comparison charts with HEVC and AVC noise performance, so we could see more meaningful comparisons. As always top notch video!

    I think he mentioned that his intent was to analyze primarily the sensor itself and the best way to do that is to look at the RAW video output. I get your point in regards to real world use - but that said there are a lot of us who shoot primarily in RAW in fact I don’t think I have ever used the ProRes built into my REDs or when we rent Alexa’s for a job but that has a lot to do with the types of jobs you take on. Event shooters and short form content creators probably don’t care about RAW as much but folks doing commercials, narrative or the types of VFX jobs. Having more information about how the raw capabilities stand up is important. I for one was pretty impressed with the 4D in this video and might consider it over the Komodo-X I was planning on adding.

    great video, but fyi hasselblad was bought out by DJI !!, so at 11:27 thats why the skin tone of the 4D is outstanding, as Hasselblad uses Sony sensors, of course, but they tweak the colour science, why the shots look so vouge like!!

    4:25 was this done on in Cine EI in the FX3 AllI format because I don’t see any grain in this setting 🧐

    In order to match the exact settings of both cameras, I didn’t use cone EI. Keep in mind the EI mode is only an interface thing, it won’t give you any difference in results

    @@THEDPJOURNEY My pleasure. Your videos are fire. Just watched and learned a lot from your 3 ways to shoot with 1 light video. I'd love to see more artistic breakdowns for cinematic lighting on a budget. I'd also pay for that in a Patreon

    Really happy to hear that, I still have part two of that video actually in the works. Just got a find some time to finish it.
