Could MOLDOVA and TRANSNISTRIA end up like Ukraine? - VisualPolitik EN

Moldova is tensely watching the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfold on high alert and with a lot of fear of becoming Vladimir Putin's next target. Moldova, one of the poorest countries on earth, has within its territory the Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic, better known as Transnistria. A self-proclaimed republic that is supported by Moscow.
In contrast, in 2020 a new pro-European government came to power in Moldova, which, as you can imagine, is not exactly to the Kremlin's liking. What role could Moldova and Transnistria play in the war in Ukraine? What exactly is the danger of Moldova becoming Putin's next target? How does the Kremlin hope to overthrow the current Moldovan government? In this video we tell you all the details.

*WRONG!* Putin and Lavrov are in Ukraine for two reasons (1.) de-nazification of Ukraine (2.) returning it to neutral status. They admitted that occupation is not their intent. They wanted to drive out the 3,500 US troops and offensive weapon. They offered Zelenskyy to return to neutral status but he refused and special operation was commenced. As far as Nazi, Azov; Ukrainian army, national guard, has been shelling and executing Ukrainian civilians for 8+ years after the 2014 illegal coup. Nazism is a problem for the whole world. I invite any uneducated biased sheep to call me a Russian troll or bot.

Absolutely. Fortunately/Unfortunately for those who took the effort to understand war, money & life from works like Sun Wu's Art of War, Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations & Carl Sagan's Future of Humanity, s/he/they will realise there exist many who will seek profits/opportunities from this crisis. This may explain why many elites/experts from states like US, China, EU, India, UK, Russia, AU, Brazil, etc. groups like IMF, WHO, UNP, RSF, ICC, WFP, TSB, POG, etc. & firms like Apple, Tencent, Samsung, Nestle, Loreal, Tata, Sony, Siemens, etc. are already making their moves in the cyber/shadow space.

btw, if somebody thought, that railway could supplement Moldova's access to the sea via Romania, or even use port of Constanta in Romania, think again. Moldovan railways are 1520 mm broad gauge, while Romania is 1435 mm standard gauge, meaning you either have to re-load the cargo, or break gauge. Neither of which makes much economic sense, given the short distance the trains would travel in Moldova. If there ever was a country, which would benefit from massive mixed gauge system, it's Moldova. being uniquely situated on the border of gauges, having a massive single partner to trade with one one gauge, and broader economic incentive to have the other.

That's the woooorst solution. First of all, joining Romania is not one step. It is abandoning sovereignty altogether (which can make the Transnistria situation even more confusing), then a long process of choosing the model of unification and then the implementation of the chosen model. To even start thinking about that you need an overwhelming public support, at least 75-80%. Unification idea in Moldova currently doesn't even have half of that support, not even a specific plan, just an idea. It is a lot of time and resources, which means that it can be spent on strengthening Moldova as a country and leaving her alone on who she should reunite with (there are options). Second. You can't just abandon Transnistria without solving the problem. If we do it, we have a potential Russian enclave on what it would become a Romanian border that is now even less eager to give up on the Russian influences (since what they were told this whole time became true and Moldova united with Romania). It is just not what anybody wants from Transnistria in the future. I hope so, at least😅

The breakaway region of South Ossetia in the Republic of Georgia is scheduled to hold a referendum on Russian Annexation in the middle of July. I'm surprised this isn't being talked about in the news more, since Georgians already feel that their government isn't supporting Ukraine enough and their government is too cosy with Russia thanks to it's current ruling party "Georgian Dream" owned by the country's only ruling oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili who made his fortune in Russia and still has close business ties and interests there....

I have heard that referendum mentioned in passing, so I assume there are journalists in the major media outlets who are keeping an eye on developments. For the nothing it's worth, it seems to me that if the people in the fake countries created by Putin want to join up with Russia and ship their young men off to Putin's meat-grinder in Ukraine, outsiders like me should respect that decision. It will probably work out for them just as well as it has for the conscripts from the Ukrainian phoney republics, and in the end, that might not be a bad thing (except for the families of the dead and all the guys who return home with permanent physical and mental damage, of course). I fully understand how Georgians would be irked by a referendum result that (supposedly) shows that there are enough idiots in South Ossetia for the vote to be in favour of annexation. But if the fools really want to join a federation that's an international pariah, dealing with numerous serious issues and heading towards even greater long-term economic problems, so be it. And, of course, anything that can be changed by one referendum can be changed again by another one.

One of Putin's strategic goals is to put Europe in an inferior defensive position, so as to make it less capable of opposing him in his future territorial ambitions. To achieve this he knows he has to weaken NATO and so he is now trying to flank NATO on the north and south, thus encircling the alliance on three sides. Having Finland and Sweden neutral would serve his desire in having control over NATO's northern flank. Controlling Ukraine and Moldova would secure NATO's southern flank for Putin. Russia is using the same false flag incidents in Ukraine, Moldova and Trasnistria as Hitler did in Czechoslovakia to justify his hostilities.

This is not a feasible solution, it would put Moldova in an impossible situation. They would either need to fight against Ukraine and defend their land or, attack their own people together with Ukraine. Even doing nothing is not an option as it would simply exacerbate the separatist movement. Transnistria and Moldova should reunite but it has to happen peacefully. It's the extensive Russian influence in Moldova's politics for the last 30 years, that created this situation with Transnistria, where concessions were repeatedly made by Moldova's authorities, allowing an even greater division. The war in Ukraine severely weakened the negotiation power of the so called Transnistrian officials (in reality, they are just mobsters backed by Russia). What I cannot understand is why the today's pro EU government does not seize the opportunity to weaken the Russian influence and bring the region closer to Chisinau.

Many Romanians speak enthusiastically and impatiently about unifying with Moldova. History points to common ancestry, language and traditions between Romania and most of Moldova's current territory, however, I believe the best time to even start considering this is once Moldova joins EU, or at least NATO. When the Soviet Union fell apart, Russia made sure to give Moldova a multiethnic territory, just like they had done in pretty much all other republics. This is to ensure they have a reason to invade in the future if they believe these republics turn their backs towards the state capitalist regime (see Ukraine), claiming this would be traitorous to the Russian speakers on the given territory. In Moldova's case, we see Transnistria or Gagauzia. Having said this, any attempt to unify at the moment (assuming ethnic Romanians in Moldova are on board) would be detrimental to both nations. It would give Russia an even bigger reason to invade Moldova, claiming "Neo-Nazism" and it would place a heavy burden on Romania, who struggles to provide services on their territory as is. Some activists in Romania even go as far as to say that this unification idea was started by Russian propaganda, in order to cause instability in the region. This is coming from a Romanian

PS: are you really saying that Transnistria doesn't really belong in Moldova anyway and should be part of Russia or Ukraine? I remember the opposite. Look at the map of USSR in 1930 and Imperial Russia in 1910. Tsarist Russia was bigger than the USSR. The commies actually hacked off parts of Imperial Russia, and CREATED ethnically based republics and autonomous regions. Back in the day, they were big on self determination for minorities. They will create separate republics, where minorities could run their own local affairs. Still communist, still part of the union, but more self determination than under the Tsar.

Between the 1st and 7th centuries AD, the south was intermittently under the Roman, then Byzantine Empires. Due to its strategic location on a route between Asia and Europe, Moldova was repeatedly invaded by, among others, the Goths, Huns, Avars, Magyars, Pechenegs, Cumans, and the Mongols. @@HUMAN-Abis well, this is basically the result of what has been going on for the last 30 years. First, it was pushed on us that we are not worthy of respect, small, primitive and insignificant. It even shows in how many Moldovans see themselves and let others treat them in day to day life in Moldova and abroad. Even I personally had to fight these things inside and then when I thought about it and realised what they are, it explained a lot about the my communities (like when they talked crap about the way they speak or didn't do anything when being mistreated, like they deserved it). Second, I started my education in Moldova and then moved to Ukraine to finish school. Most of history lessons I did there. And one of the biggest differences that I've noticed is how they teach children about their country and how they work with patriotic upbringing. There is no deliberate brainwashing or Soviet-style worshiping of any warriors or leaders (personally I didn't have that). However, the education is built in such a way that the younger people at least understand that they have something to lose and their ancestors lost it a couple of times in the past. And it's not about the economic reasons, it's just yours and you won't give it to anyone. It could have happened in Moldova too, it's not like our history is completely different to Ukraine, however it was either a deliberate sabotage from all the past governments or they just didn't give a fuck. Third, patriotism. Like, it exists in Moldova but it is waaay more complicated. In some areas and communities it's almost a dirty word. In Ukraine it's more straightforward. Being a patriot there is actually trendy. Yeah, just like with every other word, many people have their own definitions. However, most of those definitions still have something in common. In 2014 official Ukrainian army wasn't ready to stop the Russian-backed rebels from basically taking over the whole country, if they pleased. It was a piece of crap, tbh, very similar to Moldova's army nowadays. Most of the work on the East was done by the volunteers. It got so weird that the Ukrainian army in some regions started being very picky with volunteers. And, yeah, one more important thing. Ukrainians never debated whether their country should exist in the first place. Some regions have had some support towards joining one country or the other, but it was never about the whole country (+those people were never allowed into mainstream or given a huge platform). And Ukraine was a part of several countries, some of them even Slavic. Should I explain why the situation different from Moldova? The supporters of joining Romania, Russia or even reviving the USSR are probably about 50-60 % combined. If you don't think that something should exist in the first place, why fighting for it or growing an army that would be able to protect it? I'm in Moldova now and I don't necessarily agree with what Cristian said, it's not like nobody is willing to defend Moldova, however it's not a mainstream thing either. Some people are being brainwashed into giving up like "we are a peaceful country so we don't fight, and if there is anybody who is willing to fight, they are traitors that are inviting the war to our country". Some people, as those usually do, excessively rely on possible foreign support. The Russia-loving camp is irrelevant in this case since Russia is an aggressor and not protecting anyone in this war, even itself. There are other people. Like those that are willing to sit on their ass and wait for Romania or NATO/EU in general to deal with the threat. It actually can apply to both unionists and those who don't want to unite with Romania. It was a long read, sorry, but even that probably doesn't explain the whole situation. If Ştefan cel Mare suddenly got being alive again now, he would beat the crap out of most of our politicians on all sides for using his image to interpret him the way they pleased and then win elections. The spirit is still there, but it will be a challenge for it to rise. P.s.: I see comments like Cristian's so often. Again, there are people who are upset by it or who are willing to fight but they feel they are alone. Again "small and insignificant"...

Also, as far as I can see, the name "VisualPolitik" without any addon brings up the German channel for me, while I have to look for "VisualPolitik ES" and "VisualPolitik EN" to find the Spanish and the English channel, even though my KZread is set up with English as the language and the USA as country. It has nothing to do with independent journalism which is profit-based and not politically constrained. So yes, Western propaganda exists but it’s nothing at all like the stranglehold that the government has on information in a state like Russia where any “non official” story is brutally silenced/censored/disappeared.
