Could China and India go to War over Water?

Use code tldrnews at the link below to get an exclusive 60% off an annual Incogni plan: incogni.com/tldrnews
Due to an odd twist of politics, China controls most of the water in Asia as it originates in Tibet, meaning that China's downstream neighbours depend on the goodwill of CCP for a reliable freshwater supply. So, in this video, we take a look at how China controls Asia's water, why it's becoming an issue, and what might happen next.

Ok, so there are some factual inaccuracies. Hydrological survey of Brahmaputra showed that 80% of the water in the river comes from the catchment area in India and not Tibet. Similarly, Indus captures water later as it crosses into Pakistan

This can be confirmed on google maps as the Brahmaputra drainage basin mostly lies within India The region is also geographically one of the wettest places on earth, with a village called Mawsynram in that region receiving an average annual rainfall of 11,872 millimetres (467.4 in), making it one of the wettest places on Earth as mentioned on Wikipedia.

Fear of Brahmaputra water diversion might be a myth.. according to an article I read by United states institute of peace , % of water in Brahmaputra entering from China, might be as low as 7% . Such low % of water controlled by China , must be the reason Indian govt is not taking this too seriously

Whether it's water, food, energy or production there aren't many countries that do all of this themselves - China, I think, is something of an exception to this being an exporter of all but oil (and is producing a lot of it's own energy through renewable sources). It's certainly a tactic that means the rest of the world can't afford to stand up to you.

This was one major impetus driving conquest of the what is now known as the Tibet Autonomous Region. Many forget the fact these countries have been sparring on a REGULAR basis for nearly four years now in the Himalayas and nobody recalls the 1962 conflict between the two... Unlike many other comments, I don't care about mapping inaccuracies as they are obviously sourced materials and boundaries shift and that is how it goes. I think the major thing we fail to realize is a resource as precious as water makes gold look like dust... think about what an OASIS is. Water is CRITICAL and the PRC does have substantial control over multiple MACRO WATERSHEDS in the region and this is part of the conflict. Not all, of course. Good video

Rivers that originate in Tibet get most of their water along the way through tributaries. In other words, irrespective of the origin, the primary catchment areas of those rivers are NOT within Tibet. Moreover, those rivers flow DOWN from the Himalayas into the Indian subcontinent for a reason. CCP can't fight gravity either.

Classic case of the West, and especially America, (yes, including most policy makers) not understanding Geography for shit. If they could've forseen even a quarter of what China would eventually become- they would have taken Tibetan independence much, MUCH more seriously after it's annexation and subsequent years. Not saying the CIA should've done China dirty, but Nixon visiting China more or less killed any chance of that independence ever happening. There was a tiny spark of reignjtjng the issue in the 80s-early 2000s when "Free Tibet" exploded onto the public/celeb consciousness buuuut yeah. It really sucks because a low populated region (wish country) like Tibet would have made for the PERFECT caretaker for Asia's water supply. They'd never be able to use/withhold the water supply. It would have been great. Hell, even if China were able to annex the headwaters of their own two rivers and water supply- it still would've been phenomenal. But because it's now controlled by a super power...they can turn off the tap whenever they please. Not even for their own water, but for the most populated regions on earth.

China laid claims on these territories using two sources: Tang and Yuan. The Tang managed to conquer Central Asia and parts of modern Afghanistan and Kashmir for over a century (650s-760s). The Yuan meanwhile annexed Tibet and parts of modern Himalaya terrain to interior China for the first time. Given this aspect, it is worth worrying that China will justify their territorial claims of previous dynastic empires to achieve their aims over India.

India is a joke. 20 years ago China GDP per capita was about two times as big as India. Now it's more like 4 times higher. If China is "declining" then India is hopeless. And I'm not a fan of China policies myself. While China has developed somewhat, India is one of these forever "developing", "superpower next decade" countries.

@@Zeroksas As of 2024, India's Median age is only 28 years while China's Median age is about 38 years. An average Chinese is 10 years older than the average Indian. This explains why China's economy is way ahead of India. But it also explains why currently China is stagnating while India is the fastest growing major economy. "India is hopeless" Well i disagree India is one of the few major countries which has shown real growth in the 21st century. India was the 17th biggest economy in 1991 (End of Cold War) and next year it will be the 3rd biggest economy
