We have always co-existed with elephants and wildlife. Other people came and started killing our animals and called it trophy hunting and now they are back saying they are teaching us how to co-exist with the animals.

The problem though, Mr Ngwenya, is that "we" -- whoever that refers to -- did not document the co-existence you mention. So perhaps "we" should not take umbrage at a PhD student writing a thesis on these matters. She does not come across as someone with an attitude of superiority over the natives, so let "us" grant her leave to visit "our" backyard and write her PhD thesis on matters that "we" have been aware of since time began.

@@thembadube9589 Everything u just said is wrong..There are many locals with PHD's on areas surrounding and even expanding beyond her thesis..I believe what frustrates Marvellous Ngwenya is when people come to find systems that are the best in the world and somehow project a narrative that they are the saviors and even have the guts to try to take a lead role in what should be the coexistent relationship of the people with their animals..These are our animals our pride so stop trying to imply u know better or care more..Other than that it was beautiful to see my beautiful country in ur channel

😅I was initially confused by all the outrage in the comments, until the narrator said this woman would like to convince the inhabitants they can coexist with the elephants. What do you mean? How do you fly into a country that's extremely protective of its wildlife, that kills poachers on sight, with extensive laws on hunting, a country that elephants themselves flee too to seek haven, and try to convince the inhabitants to coexist with the elephants? What do you mean? I'm floored, seems the saviour complex not only still exists, but is completely detached from reality. You would think if she was such a great force of nature, she would be doing something about the wildfires and vanishing species of Australia.

So many parts of the world do co-exist but the worry is what will happen with the bulge in human population. Elephants require vast tracks of land to graze and humans are busy urbanizing. That is the dilemma.

@@BS-kl9yf At many places elephants continue to coexist around human population. I am from India and India has approximately 30,000 to 40,000 wild elephants who continue to roam vast tracts of forest despite being in one of the most densly populated country.

@@krishnkant9477 nobody said they don't. That's exactly what my statement implied. We are talking about the future. In the past, these elephants used to travel from Botswana to Angola. Ruma National Park used to be the same ecosystem with the Mara and now no elephants exist at Ruma. Mara river that supports the seventh wonder of the world was drying up due to human activity up stream until reforestration was done. In short, elephant conservation issue is not a local idea just because you are from india. IUCN has listed the Indian elephant in the redlist which means they ain't safe in India either. The African elephant is different and faces more challenges than the Asian species. Between 2019 and 2022, Kenya has lost over 5000 elephants due to prolonged drought. 10 years ago, this loss stood at 2000. Elephants are being restricted and not able to move where water and vegetation is. Would you prophesize what will happen 10 years later in such regions? That is why Botswana is being used as an example of proactive measures to sustain the future of elephants. The African elephant species is no longer thretened by poachers alone, they are dying much faster because they cannot find food and water. And where they can, there are complaints from surrounding population.

@@BS-kl9yf I agree with your concern. There are human elephant conflicts in India too but compared to African elephants, very few die due to conflicts and poaching. I have also read that African elephant population has decreased by more than half a million in past to decades while Indian elephants have gradually increased from 18,000 in 1990 (when poaching was high in India) to around 30,000 today.

Well, if you consider that 250K is todays total elephant population compared to a 250 million population just 125 years ago, someone needs to save the species from extinction.

AS YOU CROSS SOME ROADS YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL AS A WARTHOG.OR ELEPHANT, WELL ALMOST ANY KIND OF WILD, CAN ALL OF A SUDDEN CROSS THE ROAD. A FEW TIMES WE CAME ACCROSS EAGLES ON THER SIDE OF THE ROAD DOWN ONTO PRAY AND NOT ONE BUT TWENTY TO THIRTY OF THEM. WE ALMOST SAW ALL THE TYPES OF WILD EXEPT FOR LIONS AND TIGERS. Very true, Rowland. Botswana has done well in many other aspects too. Whenever I visit Botswana (which I do often) from my country, South Africa, just across the border, I admire what the people and government of your country have achieved. Low crime rate, politeness and welcoming people (who take no nonsense, I hasten to add), cleanliness, and a general environment of calmness. It is not by accident that Botswana has become a beacon of hope on a continent that is, sadly, not characterised by good governance and peace. My country could learn a great deal from Botswana; starting with a will by government to eradicate corruption.

Lovely story on the young man building a new hut. Government should limit or ban housing expansion into wild areas.

I've always believed that Botswana is the Eden of earth.

Well the Kalahari bush people are the most genetic diverse humans, meaning that we all descend from them.

Animals lived among humans for centuries before damn 'colonization' and 'modernization' ever came. It's not new. Tracing how locals did it will add great value to your study. Secondly, 'colonizers' and vistors introduced poaching to Africa for selfish gains. It wasn't an African idea.

Remind me again why the !Kung "bushmen" live in the harshest part of that region. Then bring me up to speed on what happened to the "Hottentots". Of course you are familiar with the centuries of inter-tribal slaughter that left vast areas of the Veldt littered with human remains for decades.. The inevitable clash between the southward-moving Kwa Zulu and motley bands of European adventurers, ALL looking for "Lebensraum", is not even well publicized. POLITICIZED? yes; but NOT well known outside "academic" and folk-history circles.

They add to the beauty of the nature. Human beings use their intelligence to destruct more than construct. Naiive little girl, should get a real job before she gets trampled. We don't need more photographs, that accomplishes nothing. And Botswana has not outlawed all hunting, at no time. They did put a hold on elephant hunting but learned that was not the answer. Hunting elephants is back on because farming and elephants don't coexist well. War in Angola ended 20 years ago. So this documentary is typical emotional pabalum. The bottom line, without the hunting revenue and associated employment, and the deterrent effect, wildlife and especially elephants are going the same way it has gone in most of the rest of Africa ... poached to the point of extinction.
