COTA Sausage Kerb incident

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Credit: Kasper
Running slightly wide and launching over the huge perpendicular sausage kerbs at COTA, launching me into the air and landing directly onto another one resulting in a broken back, fractured in two places.
Unfortunately this only captures the very last bit of the incident, missing the part that actually did the damage. But it's the only external footage that I've found.
Big thank you to the safety team for getting me out safely and well done to them for helping another driver the following day after the exact same incident on a kerb and exact same injury.
Regardless as to how a driver ends up reaching a sausage kerb, be it through a mistake, being forced wide, abusing track limits, unconsciousness or worse, being greeted with something that will more than likely break your back isn't the answer. Cars are not designed to be launched. Given how many incidents resulting from sausage kerbs since their introduction, it's time to take steps forward with circuit safety and remove them.

It never even crossed my mind that you could be injured this way. you would think safety officials would have taken this kind of thing into account… i look forward to seeing you come back stronger 💪

I think the cars are designed just fine to protect the more common injuries from more common crashes in normal conditions. These sausage kerbs feel like the danger, but this also could be just the unfortunate consequence of being in a race car with a very stiff suspension and stiff seating. Truly a freak incident imo cus most never really worry about a downward compression injury

Unfortunately the FIA only acts when people are killed, regardless of how many people break their spines. And for the record, at least 4 by sausage kerbs

@@BritAcrossThePond Yes, certainly, when you are too lazy to put someone there that actually looks if the track limit is not compromised. But I guess when you are a lazy ass you just put life endangering objects there.

@Jeffery - there is a long history of racing drivers who will shorten the track to gain advantage of rivals, regardless of whether it is safe to do so. Ideally, the management systems to prevent that sort of cheating are on the insides of corners, at the slowest point of the corner. However, there are some places where more is gained by maintaining a wider line at higher speed by deliberately running wide on corner exit, and so officials have put the devices out where they will become effective if all four wheels have exceeded the track limits, this means if a driver makes a mistake, or is pushed wide during feirce competition, they run afoul of the devices. And, its something that occurs at all levels of motorsport, such as for the aptly named Wall Of Champions at the Canadian F1 circuit

No idea how sausage curbs are still used I thought they banned them years ago before this accident for launching cars like the Singapore chicane

They ought to just put an anti tank mine in their place, since clearly they think killing drivers who have accidents is better than painting a white line and saying if you touch it you have to slow down
