COST OF LIVING in Russia or why russians never smile

Hi! I'm Alena and in this video I will tell you about salaries and rent in Russia. I opened one popular website with ads as if I was searching for a job or an apartment. This video was recorded in the middle of the night after I returned home from a really stressful day at work. Currency exchange rate might not be relevant anymore. How much am I making as a full time barista and is it enough to survive? Prices in Russia, self deprecation and lots of complaining about life. By the way, employers in such job offers usually say that salary is higher than it actually is. The saddest thing is that people don't believe that they deserve more.

@@swagsoccer690 I understand your point. However depending on one's proficiency in outdoor survival methods with sticks and stones, money is necessary to live. How well you live depends on how much money you have. I don't need a lot to be comfortable which means I am not rich--just comfy. Edit: Btw, I like rain.

I volunteered to teach English in Voronezh for 4 months back in 2015 and lived with one of the famililies that had kids in our program during the time. It was a very interesting and awesome experience, but did not quite realize how well-off and successful my host family actually was. I did notice dilapidated buildings and houses, some dire living conditions, the disparity is shocking. It's not ok for government to put and keep its people in this position; it should be a crime. Thank you for making videos, keep fighting to survive! I hope you can make your plan and begin the next great chapter of your life! By the way, I am a big fan of your sense of humor and wish you were my friend. Lol

@@petejames1326 You are not depressed. You are tripping that you live in the first world country. Sure it`s first in toppling down old folks on the streets and locking down people in their homes despite the first neighbor is miles away. You should move to some non 1st world country and have a life. You are conditioned to have more necessities that it`s really necessary. The problem is media promoted lifestyle and ads. Depression is gap between wants and possibilities. They created the whole imaginary world in your head, and you are desperately trying to make it real. You get triggered by others running like mad trying to do the same. I recommend countries of Eastern Europe and former Yugoslavia. Ukraine would have been fine too, since you`re not Russian or colored, but it does not exist anymore. P.S. You should teach this girl to love her country despite being depressed, like yourself. Best wishes.

I don't know how comparable the situation there is with where you live, but I remember how surprised I was to see how expensive real estate was compared to what people earn. This video gave me several thoughts and feelings. It can definitely be hard to smile when you are struggling to meet basic needs. At the same time, it can be worth remembering many people in the world who are not struggling, or even have abundance, are also not happy. Often, the things that can bring the most joy or meaning don't cost money, or not a lot. Family, friends, finding hobbies or activities that you love, perhaps simply appreciating the beauty in nature. Which is not to say to accept a tough situation, but try to find brightness even as you work toward a better one. If you have a passion for making videos, I think you've already found what could be a great answer to both the challenges above. I sincerely hope neither Google nor the Russian government restricts KZread in Russia, I think its vital to keep humanizing connections between peoples alive. Especially at a time like this.

I used to work with a Russian nurse in a hospital, and it drove her crazy that I was always cheerful. I think they are so somber, is because such bad things have happened in their country (like Stalin, the KGB, and the food shortages of the USSR) that they feel if they have a glimmer of hope, someone from the government will come by and squash it like a bug. Your hopes can’t be destroyed if you have no hope.

I know some russians too and i was born and raised in a socialist country too - east germany. And OUR history was not that different from that of Russia, they had a Tsar, we had an Emperor, they had Stalin, we had Hitler, they lost millions in both world wars, we lost millions in both world wars. But russians are still ten times more cynical then germans, don't ask me why. It's like they are all 100% nihilists. Thats why the sanctions won't work. They are already so used to poverty that these sanctions don't affect them much. It's nearly impossible to defeat such countries. That's why the west spend billions and 20 years on Afghanistan and the Taliban took over again within one day. They have literally nothing to lose.

We in Poland also never smile to strangers. I think that's just what all Slavs are like. We don't smile if there is no reason to smile. We just don't see the need to show our teeth to everyone in the street and we think it's stupid if others do it 😁 But we're nice people 🙂 We smile when we get to know someone better 😉 33 years ago I was in your age and earned 8 USD per month... But we were not unhappy even though we had no money. Now we have more money, but we have less time, less friends, life is different. Everyone is in a hurry, people are not so close to each other like then. This is the price .. Stay strong and try to focus on what you have and not what you don't have, so as not to go crazy. I hope someday better times will come for you 💗

Well said LaPanda. Life is the best teacher….let’s just do a quick recap…Lesson 1: The grass always seems greener on the other side…but as we know from life’s lessons it’s not. Let’s do the same “cost of living exercise” in another country….the result is pretty much the same…i’ve lived, worked, and studied on 5 continents in 11 countries (not counting countries that i went on vacation 😉) so i’m speaking from first hand experience…so listen to LaPanda’s words of wisdom and stop wasting your time and life…it’s not easy anywhere, especially these days….in Russia you at least have heat, fuel, and food (yes i know your prices increased) unlike many places that have empty shelves…that’s REAL POVERTY, when you have money but there’s nothing to buy…Russia is a 1000 times better now than it was during Soviet times or even during Yeltsin…you may not believe it but there are many people in the USA, Germany and other Western countries that are seriously interested in immigrating to Russia.

@@pedamucic I grew up in Poland in the 1980s when the shelves were empty so I know what that means. And these shelves were COMPLETELY empty, i.e. in the grocery store you could only buy vinegar ... and that was only 30 years ago. Then we were under Soviet rule and when we freed ourselves in 2-3 years, a lot has changed and many things have become easier, so I don't miss those times. But now it's not that simple - especially for people who don't earn much. I suppose our standard of living is similar to that in the cities of Russia, because I listen to Russian bloggers who have moved to Poland. Only better order is here and more independance. But whether we are happy depends only on us, not what we have. Will we be happy with the next pair of Prada shoes if we don't have friends or family? Will we be happy in a world where to meet someone you have to make an appointment a week ahead at the pub instead of just coming to their house like we used to be? Would it make us happier to go on an all-inclusive holiday and be bored by the pool while drinking a drink because that's how it should be? Or was it better to go camping with friends to the river bank and drink cheap wine, talk all night and laugh? As a Pole, I understand Russians. We have the same Slavic soul, mentality, dishes, faith and we believe in the tradition, the strength of the community and the conservative world order. And we smile when we want, not when it is appropriate. Poland is on the border between the cultures of the East and the West, so it is more orderly than Russia and people think more independently. Russians should too. But not everything that glitters in western world is cool.
