Thank you so much for the detailed, interesting and convincing comparison of the two pianos. As a great musician and touring artist, you brought to our attention some crucial features of these instruments. Your rating helped me a lot in my choice. P.S. If you have time, please, tell a little more about how the iPad improves the capabilities of the BX15S. Thank you very much again!

Kris- I’ve been following your travel keyboard series for a few years now. I started with your recommendation for the Japanese Roll up piano, and have had it for a year now. However, I’ve really been needing a physical keyboard since then. But one design flaw that always held me back from getting any of these folding keyboards was that “banana/telephone” keeper pin, which I really just did not want to put my money towards for $200, even if it was not a huge issue. The idea alone just annoyed me. So, I’m glad I was able to catch this latest review of yours. I snatched the new Cossain/BX15S right away (for about the same price I would have paid for the older model anyway). I only hope they make one in pearl white, but this will do for now. Maybe I’ll do a paint job on mine. I have trips coming up to hawaii, Las Vegas, Philippines, and Israel, in the next year and I plan on bringing both my roll up piano and this folding one incase something happens to one. I cannot be without my piano, and really need the practice. Plus I love my instruments lol. Many thanks! Always love your videos and your playing! Geoff.

Thank you, this is a very useful video. I actually bought a Cossain before viewing your video and I agree that the sound is really decent for the price. I used it to drive my Arturia samples on a laptop and it works well with a very slight latency. The sustain pedal works on the native sound but not when I drive the Arturia samples, no idea why. I also don’t know what the pedal 2 is at the back with a midi jack. Finally it seems that using it with an iPad makes a lot of sense. You are using igrand? Any recommendations for best iPad apps? Again lots of thanks. And I do recommend the Cossain.

Well, after trying to solve problems I have decided to return this keyboard. I think for what Kris is using it for is good for his situation. The problems I could not seem to fix for me were these. There is no way I found to totally eliminate the on board keyboard sound when tryin to also get an app piano running at the same time. The best I could do was to set the volume on piano very low to 2 or 3 and then run the app piano volume as high as I could without distortion. But it was faintly still present, and the higher I turned the volume up on the piano the more it mixed in the built in sound, somewhat ruining the nice app piano sound. Another issue I had was problem connecting to iPhone / iPad Bluetooth midi or usb midi. Sometimes it would work, other times it took forever to connect. I also found latency a big issue, especially when trying to play midi drums using the keyboard as a controller to play the drums… lots of double beats with only one press of a key. I also own the other bx20 keyboard and absolutely no latency with apps or any issues connecting with usb midi or Bluetooth midi. The bx20 is more difficult to play as a piano, but I find it much more solid in all the other operations I need. I was hoping to use the bx15s as a piano app controller with a more playable keyboard. But for now I find the bx20 I have does all I need… great for running apps and just practicing fingerings and learning piano note passages. I think this is a good practice piano on its own, or even some as Chris making it work for performing. I just miss a great piano sound from an app. It also could be a good beginning learning keyboard. I think it works on its own best…..I had problems doing much more with it. I hope they keep working on improving it. It really is a great idea, and I make great portable use of my bx20. Mine I think was purchased under the magic on name…..I’ve had it a few years, and no problems. I truly hope my issues were my own and the bx15s works for others as they wish.

Hi Kris - i was just looking at this beast a few days ago and guess what? You popped up when i searched for bx15s today. I even chatted with Bora to get more info. My main concern was bluetooth connectivity and the number of tones of only 32. Is the midi usb cable provided? i am contemplating between this baby and the BS20 which also reviewed. thanks for the great review. cheers.

Very cool video man! Can I ask a question? Do you know any digital piano out there with narrower keys? Like 6 or 5.5 inch octave span instead of the standard 6.5? I saw you playing the Korg Microkeys that would be great for me if they keys weren't so abnormally short in length. Do you know anything else that exists out there?

Well, I spent most of day figuring things out. I have had some success. As far as I can tell there is no way to turn off the sounds that come with the keyboard, therefore, it will always be present. I have found the work around is to run the actual keyboard volume very low(1-3) and then play with the gain in the app your trying to use. I have found igrand you can make it so you really can’t here the built in keyboard sound. It will work well this way with most synth apps, organs, other instrument apps. Does not work great with all piano apps. A lot depends on how much control of volume and velocity gives you. I still found with igrand if I Did not set the midi channel to ch16 in app I heard artifacts. Once I did that it’s fine. Have no idea on that. If you input midi drums from a keyboard, I had no luck with any app with this. No way to mask the built in bx sound on percussive sounds that I have found, and albeit it does not get recorded(the bx sound) the midi doesn’t work well lots of double hits from just hitting a key once.too me one would do better entering that from pads or the iPad etc itself. Again, why it has trouble with this I don’t know….possibly the way they have the velocity set on the bx keys. I bought this keyboard as I have the one before it. It works great, but I just found it unplayable as a piano. I thought the keys were full size but they aren’t and on that model I found the spring action impossible to play anything unless you just hit it hard all the time. But I had no midi issues when I just did not monitor through that keyboard. That keyboard would work for just pad and synth sounds and it did do drums like one would be expect. I find this bx15s a huge improvement in the keyboard action and feel….. at least at this price point and the portability. Like all Keyboards it does take time to get use to it. Then again that’s a personal thing if one likes or not. I’ll be the first to admit there certainly are better…….. but I doubt in a folding piano at this price at this time . I dont think with its quirks it is by any means a pro keyboard, and I don’t think that is their market. I think for me it’s possibly a good practice very portable piano. I have not played one, but the next cheapest at present I think would be the Korg Liano at around 329 I think.. 13 lbs. but it does not fold in half. But, I know you can disable the sounds within the Liano if you just ant app sounds so they both don’t play at same time. Anyway, since I pretty much figured it out, I will play with it a few more days to see if I decide to keep or not. My current controller I use is a very old fatal studio 88. Heavy as hell, but it’s what I have. I like it’s feel, but it does not have much velocity control for dynamics. I think this bx, actually has better ability for soft and loud attack. Playing. The studio 88 is most likely one of fatal early entrees way back into the market. I can’t actually believe it still works 😊. Anyway, I just thought I’d write things I dealt with and came across in case it helps others. Also I’m no pro player, I’ve just taught myself some classical and ragtime tunes. It’s a whim to me but I enjoy it. My music career was a guitarist singer songwriter for about 10 years, and I still love dabbling with it all😊….all said, I really wonder why some pro manufactures don’t make folding pianos. Perhaps because of the moving folding parts( at least at this price), may not survive the pro touring etc. It certainly makes the ,ost sense to me in the easiest way to carry 88 keys.

I see on Amazon that they are showing an upgraded version for 2024. The model says Cossain BX16S 15. It appears that this is the same as the BX15S but I am not absolutely sure. Would you know if the BX16S 15 is an upgraded version? Also with the speakers on the model you showcased it seems that they would suffice for busking which is why I am interested in the keyboard.
