I'm from France, and have a solid western classical musical background, but I just discovered Bulgarian musical genre. And I must admit it, its kind of a revelation. From my perspective, It sounds like it shares some features of Renaissance music from the 16th century, like Monteverdi, but with the addition of some oriental patterns, that would be totally forbidden in classical western music, and have not been introduced before the 19th century. So in a word, it sounds to me like extraterrestrial music from a different timeline :) I'm so glad to stumble upon this!

Thank you for your perspective on this. I don't have a classical background but I understand what you're saying, I felt those things you are able to describe. I only discovered this music an hour ago and I'm utterly stunned by it.

"I have no idea to this day what those two ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it." - The Shawshank Redemption

Yes, good quote. The lyrics bring a whole new world you need to know for years and years and have experienced in some way in order to get them most of the time. The original was about Italian ladies but it's the same for any culture.

@@huskytail Some music sound really beautiful but it could be a bunch of nonsense. If a piece of music you don't understand can bring joy for the rest of your life, then maybe it is better to be ignorant in this case?

My fav movie.Actually texts/words in bulgarian folklore are very simple but in the same time they have deep meaning and even translated they can't bring the same meaning that they contain.

This is very old song. They are singing about one young husband that was just arrived from a long long trip and is waiting for his wife to go out of the house and wait for him, but she did not and instead his mother went out and said “she couldn’t come and see you because she (give a birth meanwhile) and is sleeping with the baby” :)

It could be hymns about losses in war. It is kind of tragic and also brilliantly put compositions that shoot straight through your heart..Even the soul. I'm near tears during these listening jams.

The song often tears me up. Reminds me of entering my village in Bulgaria after having been away for a long time. To smell the fields and the wind of the motherland, that's what this piece feels like

Wonderful performance. The "Bulgaria" hall, built in 1937, where most of such folklore concerts are held, has long been too small to accommodate those who wish to attend them, especially foreigners who came specifically to Bulgaria to hear live some of the best folklore performers and choirs. Therefore, at a general level, a decision was made to build a new one with a much larger capacity. I hope that this will happen soon and that the first concert in it will be of the best Bulgarian artists from all musical genres, and they are by no means few....

" Last night Stoyan returned from long roads far away. He was on the gates knocking and shouting ''Hey, come out pretty Dobro!'' (his wifes name, from Dobra, Dobrina - female name that cames from the bulgarian word ''good'') ''Came out to open the gates, so i can free the buffalos from the cariage, to free them and then to unload the cariage''. Pretty Dobra didnt came out, but Stoyans mother spoke to him: Dobra put the baby to sleep, she soundly (sweetly) fall asleep next to it... Its a song from Thracian folklore district, Bulgaria, where Im from, my father name is also Stoyan and he is profetional truck driver so I love this song. My mother name is Katya, but still... :)
