Corrosion Inspection on Noisy Steel

Ғылым және технология

What started as a probability of detection video (POD) ended up as a video about a weird, noisy sample piece I got. But heck, noise still abounds and we gotta know how to do something with it.

The Ghost shirt you wore really helped me absorb the subject material Paul!! Folks in the trades have GREAT taste in music. Seriously, thank for the clear comparison of transducer size vs. probability of detection. As a soon to be UT2, this is a valuable lesson!

I wanted to lower the table and show Papa Emeritus' full headshot, but the lights on my table move with it. Oh well, if you know Ghost, you know what he looks like. Awesome band live too!

Fine job sir. Breaking down the sensitivity aspect between these transducers as it relates to corrosion and similar style indications is well done.

I remember we faced a lot of noise while mapping the corrosion on tanks using Silverwing's Scorpion 2. If I am not mistaken, the Excel macro report generator they provided had a high/low filter that kept everything tidy. It was ages ago, so I am a bit fuzzy on the details, it might not be related to the video. Paul, you are the gift that keeps giving, as always, thank you for the valuable insights.

You could use low frequency eddy current, but it's more of a screening tool.

In this case we asume HIC defect?

Definitely not. If HIC is suspected for the service of the equipment, then an appropriate inspection technique should be applied. In this case, it's just noisy hot rolled steel.

I would assume that almost all of the plate defects should show up at approximately half the nominal thickness.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If you see the macro image, they could be anywhere. For laminations, yes... they're usually "big sheet" reflectors about half way thru
