So many factors come into play in squatting. Big air in the abdomen and chest, keep eyes up, engage the lats and pull the bar into your traps and don’t let it spin. You’ll know when it’s right because the stress will be on the legs and not on your back

As a professional classical musician there is so much I can relate to in this discussion. Here is obviously a true craftsman talking about, really, the core issues in any discipline about how to "better yourself". Teaching beginners and amateurs is probably the most difficult of all, because it requires you to have a profound understanding of both yourself and the other person in relation to what you are trying to acheive. Just lovely stuff!!

thanks for the vid. I was a life long diet and fitness enthusiast( lifting when young but never for power and/or size, just functional strength as basketball player then later competitive tennis. I was in great shape at 50 and figured I'd be able to "school" my kids on lifting ( one boy, one girl); but freakishly wound up 1/2 paralyzed; I lived when they said I'd die so not whining here, just saying thanks, cause I'm pointing my kids 17 & 24 to this for FORM, which I always was preaching to them as super-critical for lasting health and usable strength. So; thank you! all please remember even at our strongest and healthiest we humans are still vulnerable to the crazy things that can lay us low in this world = no one is ever "bullet proof." God bless!

Bone density, connective tissue, tearing fibers, balance etc...I have a hard time taking this kind of advice from Mike. Sure, he looks great, better than I'll ever look at this stage in my life. And he's got a lot of experience etc...This stuff just isn't entirely true. And it clouds the overall point. Regarding squats: he starts the video very bullish on this being the right way to squat. But, at 8:22, he gets into the most important part. Squatting this way makes it predominantly a HAMSTRING & GLUTE focused movement! Finally. That's what people don't understand. The fact that your knee is NOT traveling forward means that the primary muscles being activated are your glutes. Your quads have very little involvement. He then gets into the difference between high bar vs. low bar etc...so I go right back to the beginning. This is not the "right" way to squat. It is an alternative way to squat. It very much depends on your goals and what you're trying to emphasize and achieve.

Two common mistakes people do when they squat: - crush their knees inward and start to stress and trembling which put alot of tension on the knees -bent over too much which put alot of stress on the lower back, just keep the chest up and back straight and use your legs to come up and down, ur legs r stronger than ur back Go to see how to squat on the old labs when the master "tom platz " himself talk about his favorite exercise "squat"

it's not bad actually. Depends what do you want from your squad really. I do it like this: one day per weak- high bar squad for Quads, one day: low bar for hams and glutes, and one day for leg press, extensions and hipstrusts (or you can go for hamstring machine). If you have big quads - you should squad with lower bar more. If you have bad quads- squad with high bard more. Depends if all you want is to lift more weight or develop certain muscles.

at 9:30 that guy made a great question, that mike just did not have the ability to respond in a professional away, being extremely rude to the guy, answering the question to the crowd without looking to the guy once, or making him questions about it, like "do you have lower back pain, or inflammation etc" to then frame his response, instead just flipped around and went to his comfort zone, without answering actually nothing, completely shutting the guy up because he totally shut down communication between them because he did not answer looking to the guy . to the 9:30 guy, you avoid over stressing the lower back by maintaining a high level of mobility and range of motion on your lower back, using lower back stretching technics specially after training and throughout the week, and good back posture throughout the movement, using correct squatting shoes etc etc there is a lot to be said about it. I am not a O'hearn hater, he is usually right about everything he says and is an impressive guy, specially for his age, but to each is own, he is great to train guys like him, but beginners, older people or populations with special needs he is completely out of his depth.
