Coros vs Garmin - Comparing Coros Vertix 2S to Garmin Fenix at Cocodona 250

Спорт

Coros or Garmin - what is the right sport watch for you? In today's video, I tested both watch - wearing both during Cocodona 250 miles and Bryce Canyon 100 miles.
More specifically, I tested the Coros Vertix 2S vs. Garmin Fenix 6X. And it's important to emphasize, it's an older garmin vs. the newest coros. So let's not extrapolate beyond the experiment itself - which was to understand what kind would an upgrade mean - what's the real difference?
Because of course the coros will overperform, but by how much?
The goal here is not to review all the specs of the watches - I'm not a tech guy. I'm a trail guy - I know trail, I know what I need to finish an ultra marathon, and I know what I want in a sport watch. So don't expect going into details about specs, or the tiny tiny insignificant benefit of the watch - I'll focus on what truly matters to someone who mostly just cares about being on trail. If you want the details and specs - best to just go on their respective websites.
For transparency, this isn’t sponsored (aka I’m not paid) BUT coros provided the watch. I think it's important to be upfront about these things so you can make decision with full clarity. And hopefully the comparison provide you unbiased info as to what you can expect from such upgrade.

    Yes! Definitely… what’s amazing with Coros is the autonomy while having a precise GPS and tactile screen… I may consider this brand when I wish to replace my Garmin. Would you be able to compare their respective apps? It’s quite important to me as well. I really like the Garmin dashboard (much better than my native Apple Watch Ultra 2 one, in my opinion). Curious about what Coros is proposing. If your partnership is still valid with Coros, I would definitely use your link 👍. A way to thank you for all your great advice and experience sharing 😊…

So switching was scary and I was worried it'd feel as awkward as me wearing my wife's clothing ... oh wait bad example... well anyhow, that it would just feel "wrong", But not really. The weirdest / funniest thing was that cocodona was I think only my second activity with the watch. So at the end, 4 days sleep deprived, I was like "huh...so...hmm... how do I 'stop'?"

    I still prefer my Enduro 2, but Coros are getting very close. I very much like what they are doing with mountaineering/multi pitch climbs - specific profiles designed for this and fine tuning the GNSS algorithm for these scenarios. As opposed to generic climb profile on Garmins. Of course in this comparison Vertix 2S wins as expected, 6 is watch with older technology, not as efficient, lacks multiband GNSS etc. Vertix 2S is a great alternative to 7X Pro or Enduro 2 and much cheaper as well.

  • @runningwithsimon

    Yeah exactly, very good points. The intent here was to compare an older watch (mimicking the situation 80% of us are in) and are thinking about upgrade. Is it worth it? What's the actual difference in practical terms. Enduro is for sure a beast. Never tried myself and not sure I can swing a $1000 retail price, but solid watch - if that matches ones needs, go for it!

    Hi Simon, thanks for this (and all the others) video, which helped me to run my first 100 miles yesterday! I ran the South Downs 100 (UK). I do have a Garmin 6, and I love the app; in general, I was delighted with the performance of the watch, but unfortunately, despite the watch at the start of the race was fully charged and gave me 30 hours of life, it ran out at 26hours and 35 minutes, luckily I was 4 miles from the end, so no big problem but it wasn't enjoyable to run the last bit without it. So I guess for people who run 100 miles slow, within 30 hours, then Coros should be the answer. It will be a plus if you will be able to test and compare other models

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    19 күн бұрын

    Congrats!! I'm actually thinking of doing South Downs some day - do you recommend? That's really unfortunate about the watch - I never had it die on me in a race (my Fenix 5 did die after 20hr), but it's been very close sometimes. There's a few tweaks you can do to have your garmin last a tiny bit longer which can help, and which I often did. I turned off Wifi/Bluetooth on it. If I was worried, sometimes I'd turn off heart rate monitor (I use it in training to adjust pace, but not so much in race...I KNOW if I'm going too fast - but it's not ideal). I deactivate any vibration notifications, try to not use the light, etc. It's all not great or ideal, but sometimes can give that little bit more juice. Anyhow, I guess the most important is that YOUR battery lasted longer than your watch, congrats!!! ps: oh and switching to "GPS only" mode instead of using GPS + GLONASS or GALILEO. Helps for sure and it's still plenty accurate enough for what we do. The ultratrac mode was very bad any time I tried and would not recommend.

    @runningwithsimon

    22 күн бұрын

    Yeah, it'd be interesting to compare those and that's why I really wanted to emphasize it's an old vs. newer watch. But I'm sure some people would claim it's unfair too. Because, is it really fair to compare enduro 2 at a retail price of about $1000 when the vertix 2S at retail ~700? Wouldn't a Fenix 7X be more fair? But not the solar, otherwise retails is higher. It seems a fair comparison would need to be watch at the same retail price but that limits the choice.

    Great watch, can I ask, did you have the map screen on all the time though? My experience of the Vertix 1 is that the map screen reduces battery life and it would be good to know by how much. I tend to just leave it on maps the whole race, I don;t want to faff around changing screens to see if I'm going left or right at an upcoming junction. The Vertix 1 is a great watch too, I went on a running holiday in Chamonix for two weeks with it... and I didn't even take my charging cable! Thats the confidence you get from a Coros. Having said that I think you should probably compare it to the latest fenix to give Garmin a chance next time.

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    17 күн бұрын

    No I didn't have the map screen on at all time - just when checking if I'm still on track and or to figure out a junction. And you're right, my understanding is that it drains battery. Not sure how much however, but there's going to be processing power to generate and display a map. Same thing with garmin obviously. I also turn off the auto-black-light thing. It's practical, but I know it will drain battery so I'd rather just click it when I need it.

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    4 күн бұрын

    Yes, that's a good question! And yes, GPS only for both. I used them exactly how I would use them in 'real life'. I'd go dual-band only if I was mountaineering, or something where exact accuracy is critical. In this context, longer life was more important. Basically, the Garmin I left exactly how I've used it for the past ~20-25 100 milers, and I tried to match the setting for coros.

Saying that, I have pieces of pencil eraser as buttons held down with electrical tape that I change every 14 days or so, lol. One day I'll join this decade I guess. What GPS settings do you use?

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    19 күн бұрын

    Because this is a real race setting and not lab testing - I used them exactly how I would. So for both, it was "GPS only" - the ultratrac mode on garmin from my experience is not good enough. And using more system on either the garmin doesn't will eat more battery but the GPS only is good enough for trail navigation. I'd activate all systems only if I was mountaineering or something where precision mattered much more.

  • @runningwithsimon

    Will you send me one? The point was more to compare what one gets from upgrading to a newer watch. Not sure the enduro would necessarily be a fair comparison - is it fair to compare a watch that retails at $1000 vs. $700? Fenix 7X Pro might be more fair.

    ? Every single road and trail KZreadr channel that I've seen reviews on discloses how they got the product, either free for the purpose of review or bought out of pocket. Maybe there's one I missed? But of over a dozen, I can't think of a single one. The "how I got this" disclosure seems to be pretty standard practice- as it should be of course.

  • @runningwithsimon

    The ones i respect do - you are correct on that. And maybe my language was too harsh. But many will "disclose" but it's buried. Sure, you go in the notes and you'll find it somewhere mentioned. But not nearly as upfront. Insta360 is notorious for almost asking folks to not say it... And they'll review videos and such. Reality is that for some, their channel is their revenue, and that leads to shadier practices.

    Simon, absolutely love the channel but really disappointed with this video. I think your results would be very similar the opposite way had you used an old model/heavily used Coros and a brand new Garmin out of the box. Additionally, it seems really disingenuous to present this as an unbiased review considering you got it for free and getting kickbacks for purchases. I don't have any issues with you being supported by Coros, but this is absolutely not an unbiased or even fair (old vs new) comparison. You should change the title to "New Coros vs Old Warn Out Garmin" .

    Thanks for the feedback, and I'm sorry to disappoint you on this. I've tried to be clear that I received it for free - literally any review you'll see online is in the same situation. The difference is that I'd be surprised if I even end up making the equivalent of $1 per hour I've spent making this video - whereas bigger channel make probably in the $10k... As for old vs. new, again the point was more to see what you get with an upgrade - mimicking a situation most of us are in which is you already have a watch, what do you get if you buy a new one. I never said coros is better than garmin. I didn't even say a single bad thing about my fenix 6. AND I pointed out that cost will be different so that could be a reason to go for an older watch. But sorry to disappoint you, I'll try to do better

    A battery comparison of a watch that is several years old with a brand new watch can NEVER reflect reality. You yourself have commented that a LiIon battery is subject to natural ageing. I also miss a statement as to which GPS settings you used in each case.

    Thanks for the feedback. I also commented that this is more to reflect a situation which is actually a more common reality to most folks - you have an older watch, and want to upgrade. What do you get for your upgrade. Is the difference better? Anyhow - I can see how you are not happy with the review. I'm sorry for that and will strive to do better.
