Coronavirus: The Queen gives special address during pandemic - BBC News
The Queen speaks of “a time of disruption in the life of our country” as she addresses the UK in a rare televised speech.
In a message recorded at Windsor Castle, she says it is an “increasingly challenging time” for the nation - bringing grief, financial hardships and “enormous changes”.

The Queen continues her message by thanking everyone “on the NHS front line” - as well as care workers and other key workers - “who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties outside the home in support of us all”.
“I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times,” she says.

amorettique, ...and it was some broadcast. She was fourteen. She read it, but she did so as if she was making a speech, not as if she was reading. It came from the heart. She was an amazingly competent person, even at that age. Her second major broadcast was for her 21st birthday, when she dedicated herself to serve her people all her days. And she has done so.

Having the symbol of the nation being a partisan political figure is harmful for national unity and leadership in times of crisis. As an American, I have to say that I feel way more comfort from the Queen's address than I have ever felt from Donald Trump. My hope is that this pandemic subsides sooner than later and that someone with infinitely more ability and good sense returns to the position of POTUS.

She keeps her opinions to herself. It's hard to hate somebody impartial to politics and religion. Even though she's the head of the Church of England. She is what's setting the UK and the Commonwealth apart from the rest of the world - a real wise leader, with an impeccable reputation and a desirable morality. I'm not one of her subjects but lived close to Windsor and enjoyed many of the venues launched under her patronage. I've grown very fond of her.

@Jay U I think that what Liz was trying to say was that at least there is someone in a position of status/importance in the UK system (even if "just" a constitutional monarch) who can speak in a manner that helps to bolster all the people in the UK. We have Trump... who can barely string together sentences/tweets and does nothing but lie week-in and week-out. We don't have anyone of comparable status to Queen Elizabeth who speaks in such a way to *all* the people of the countr(y/ies) in question.

HM The Queen is one of the most consistent and amazing people on our planet today. HM has represented the United Kingdom in a way that no one else could. Forget about the fact that she is the Queen, is one of the wealthiest people in our country and that she lives in palaces with servants and guards and has a good degree of power - this is what Queen Elizabeth was born into at birth through no intention or accident of her doing. Queen Elizabeth is remarkable - no words can describe her reign and I hope that we have many more years of her even though she is a remarkable 93 year old.

@@graceygrumble In terms of power, and I did say "degree of power", that's where you are unfortunately wrong. Officially, and legally, the Queen has the power to declare war and declare peace, although currently, our Prime Minister's can too. She is the commander-in-chief of the British military, meaning all soldiers swear an allegiance to serve in her name and for the country. She can also appoint and dismiss Prime Ministers and Ministers - the fact that the Queen has never done this even though we've had two incompetent PMs in the last thirty years - this is testimony to what a wonderful person she is. Having a President would be more costly, and involve a much higher chance and scale of corruption.

She can declare neither war nor peace; CoC is an honorary position; she can only appoint the leader of the political party who won an election, as prime minister. She has NO power. None... not a jot. But to say that she has 'no power' is technically wrong. She has more power and tons more respect than you give her credit for... PM and other politicians come and go but the Queen has survived nearly 70 years in her position.

She has been a 'constant' in a changing world; seen it all; heard it all and navigated it all, without putting a foot wrong.
