Coronavirus: Is mass testing the answer? - BBC Newsnight

Some say that if we're going to live with #Covid19 but reduce the chances of continued lockdowns, mass testing is critical. But how straightforward is it? Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
Increased coronavirus testing in areas of the UK with higher numbers of cases has led to shortages elsewhere.
But public health experts say this strategy could mean that big rises in numbers in other places are missed.
Testing people and then tracing the contacts of those who are infected - is considered vital to stop coronavirus from spreading.
Deb Cohen reports and in the studio Kirsty Wark is joined by by former Health Secretary Stephen Dorrell.

Population Estimate 2018-06-30 ; Welwyn Garden City: Hertfordshire: 45,660: (48 000 2020) = 48,000 to be tested every week if 4 tested every hour for one test line = 9,600 tested every day for a 5 day week for one test line, but one test line at 4 tests per hour for a 5 day week and an 8 hour day = 160 tests per line per week. So to carry out 48,000 tests for Welwyn Garden City each week, you would need 300 test lines. Put another way to test the whole population of the UK would need 470,000 test lines. You would need to contact everyone to allocate a time and date and advise everyone where their nearest test site is. Allowing for the fact that many will not be able to attend their allotted time, may be late arriving or may not turn up, it would probably be necessary to add a few extra test lines to each location. This idea would probably need 6,000,000 staff to send out invitations, adjust altered preferred dates and times, organise transport for disabled and mentally handicapped citizens, manage arrivals at test centres, take tests, evaluate tests, add test results to a database, contact those that test positive and check that those who have subsequently to quarantine to make sure they stay at home for the required time. To carry out 70 million tests a week, the cost would almost certainly cost far more than the estimated £100 Billion.

The thing I don't understand is that a test is only valid at that moment, even if you test negative, you could then walk into a supermarket 10 minutes later and catch the virus. So how does testing help?

Yes, yes it definitely is. Or at least it's part of it. Combine mass testing with contact tracing, enhanced cleaning and disinfection, social distancing, face coverings, cough etiquette and hand washing, and COVID-19 can be suppressed.

But strangely even if targeted testing, we find that often 1 person is +ve but the rest of those in their bubble never get symptoms or test +ve.

I really, really wish I could ask whoever was responsible for designing infographics in this video: did you seriously just google "frequency" and use whatever was the first image that came up?? What are these bloody waves supposed to represent?? This is BBC Newsnight and here we are, looking at what appears to be electromagnetic waves, shrinking and expanding, happily blinking red and green here and there, for 10 minutes. The sheer idiocy of the choice of graphic design for this video is just astounding. And the irony is, at 2:42, you have an expert speaking, and the bloody paintings she has in the background are a clearer representation of what the problem of false positives is! Well done BBC, you've been defeated by a random piece of pop art.

The graphics are not intrusive, and accurately give an impression of the way the prevalence of virus infections generally can rise and fall over time as various factors affect their transmission and infection rates. I'm not sure why you're giving such priority to mere screen decorations - I think there are far more important things to be concerned with.
