Coronavirus: Could the UK adopt a German-style jobs scheme? - BBC Newsnight

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is set to make an announcement about what happens after the furlough scheme expires at the end of October. Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
The move comes after mounting pressure on the government.
BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg says Mr Sunak has been considering different forms of wage subsidy and will announce more financial help.
He is understood to be looking at options including a salary top-up scheme, similar to those already operating in France and Germany.
The Treasury has also announced there would be no Budget this autumn.
Newsnight Political Editor Nick Watt reports.

UBI will be a basic right in 20 years, more and more jobs are being taken by AI and we have no industry or production. You can visit a food bank and live in a cardboard box. Thousands of small businesses folding at the moment. My home town has been devastated by the first lockdown. No safety net for the self employed, you can claim universal credit they tell us... Most will get the shock of their lives when they try and claim universal credit and find out they will be expected to eat fresh air because it will actually cover little more than your bills if you are lucky and already live a frugal lifestyle.. For many the reality is that the comfortable life we knew before is gone. This is the new normal they where telling us about.

Don't believe the lies from the media and politicians!! Let's stand up, fight back, and get our normal lives back. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aq2XuqWSeabFj9o.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKCtj5eLqNa5cpM.html This is NOT about a virus (that we know is hogwash). This is about an AGENDA. Why do people still believe this c-virus nonsense? This is NOT how humans are supposed to live. Just use basic logic and common sense. This is a well-orchestrated implausible virus scare (with a cleverly designed, fancy/scary name) that is part of a worldwide pharmaceutical industry, Bill Gates (the biggest funder and controller of the WHO and CDC), and media agenda to scare the entire world into believing the only solution is mandatory vaccinations. No medical or science degree is needed to know this. Almost EVERY "test" will be "positive" for common colds or normal flus because it is part of the planned agenda. Nobody has died or is infected (cases) from any coronavirus, and do not allow them to keep you muzzled (masks) like zombies and caged (locked up in your house) for their agenda. The daily, fake, scare-tactic hospital images and words (outbreak, surge, spike, wave, etc), reports, theories (e.g. asymptomatic), and death statistics of unknown/nameless people or people who were already dying from serious previous conditions are part of the brainwashing. Do not just blindly believe and comply to all of this nonsense. This lie has gone on too long and they won't even say when it will/might end.. So the idiocy continues all over the world with no end in sight! ************* *The goal is to create a false or unreal FEAR everywhere in the world. Constantly showing and seeing people in masks without ever saying when the nonsense will end creates constant fear. The daily non-factual news reports create more false and unreal FEAR. The constant fear leads people to accept anything that will alleviate the omnipresent fear.. The (fake) vaccinations for the (fake) virus is the savior in the minds of people all over the world. And B. Gates and his WHO will go down as the saviors of the world. This guy has been pushing with his vaccination ideas for Africa and the world for years now. Now, he's going full scale to implement his plans. This quest for legacy and power needs to be stopped.

You only have to speak to those who have lost loved ones to know besides the nurses and hospital staff dealing with all this. Additionally we know more than we did since March but it was stated time and again by families that they were unable to stay by the side of the family member. However heartbreaking it was at the time, it still is for those that have lost family recently too. Things may be less difficult in some ways or may not have changed st all, this is reality and not a plague as you stated, it is however a pandemic, which I do believe is worldwide rather than country wide. Millions of cases hundreds of thousands of deaths, so far. Government advisers said 20,000 would be a good result, well its 40,000+ and still rising. Condolences to all that have lost someone, speedy recovery to those hospitalised right now.

The rise in cases is no longer leading to a rise in deaths, the figure palateaued just before August and has only risen by about 500 since then. There shouldn't be any need for further lockdowns other than for those that have the virus and others in their household. The numbers are the same for every country that's had it, once the death rate plateaus it barely rises at all, even after a second wave of infection.

  • @hopepeace4956

👍👍 This can be verified using official ONS data. According to NHS, the number of people officially reporting covid symptoms are DECREASING, AND HAVE BEEN DECREASING (on average) FOR THE LAST 5 DAYS. ALL proves that the "number of cases" is the most Bollox stat anyone should use. The most relevant are deaths, then serious hospital cases, then hospital admissions, then hospital/NHS calls. "Cases" mean diddly squat. Which is why the corrupt governments are using cases. They just test more people wherever and whenever they want the numbers to go up. Cases should *only* matter when mentioned as a percentage of number of people tested. Eg 100 people tested, 3 tested "positive".

It will probably work for a while for single ppl with no kids. But doing this long term for families and ppl on very low income is going to be a big problem. Maybe if the scheme ran along side benefits it would be ok. But for single ppl and those not entitled this is going to be hard. The power above the government definitely has another agenda going on in the background, these next few years are gonna be tough and we will see a lot change for the worst unfortunately.

If at the moment you have a job, a home food and money in your pocket, then you are very well off. Be grateful for that, there sre hundreds who are close to losing their jobs, homes and entire standard of living and are facing universal credit procedures after years in their jobs. Stop moaning, pick yourself up, dust your self down, keep your head up and fight together to get through this. Without each other. We have NOTHING!! STy safe people.

See Thatcher's 1980s. Manufacture and heavy industry closed down and a service economy put in its place with the 3 million unemployed left to try to find employment they were not skilled for. Nothing really done to help people reskill. Pandemic hitting a service economy now; mass unemployment to come and no real plan to combat this other than prop up business owners that already have alot. Now they know people can work from home and computers can do alot of the work people once did. What they are looking at are short term fixes.... What are the long term fixes?

@@guff9567 We should take lessons from other countries’s success - watch our border and carry out multiple tests on anyone entering the country under a strict 14-day-quarantine. Hundreds of thousands of people will not get COVID-19 if we’ll follow this aggressive response, even without a lock-down or social distancing. If we DO realise who’s infected, we’re MORE likely to slow down the virus. Look at those most densely populated places in the world, they DIDN’T have a lockdown but they’d managed to slow the virus because of strict and aggressive measures and people there been wearing face coverings.

And we'll legislate to create jobs. And no doubt we can legislate to make the deficit go away, inflation to stay away, prosperity to sweep over the land, death in general to end, crime to stop and everyone will live happily ever after.
