My friend and I had a couple of fish suppers today (22/11/23). The price came to the grand total of £19.40😱 Now for those of you who have no clue about how much we get ripped off these days, I’ll give you a little example. In 1979 the cost of those two fish suppers Ivy and Bert are having, just for lunch I hasten to add, would have cost £1.66. Now I know you’re saying to yourself, what about inflation? Well with inflation which has been pretty steady until a few years back should bring these two suppers to the grand total of £7.82, even with the highest inflation since WW2! 🤔 So why are our working class cheap fish suppers costing us 2.5 times more than they should be? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Makes me 🤢🤮

Had a few days off but as you may know "All good things come to those who wait" and April 79 is a month well worth waiting for. The only sad thing about this omnibus is the few minutes of silence in the last episode, sorry about that. On the bright side we have nine episodes of pure iconic Corrie stuffed to the brim with drama, where you may want to rip Ivy's head off, or Alf, on the rampage sticking it to anyone crossing his path. Comedy is provided with the brilliant egg scheme Stan and Eddie rope Hilda into and Fred's hairpiece which uncle Albert breaks the silence on and everything in-between. So get that kettle on and settle in and go back to a time that by today's standards is and was shear paradise...you know what I mean ❤️

That's brilliant, thank you. I've watched so much and I still can't believe how different and better it was from what it is today. It has the same name, and in some ways, that's about it. There are some good characters and it's more diverse, but too many of the storylines are chaotic, overblown or just ludicrous. Not enough attention is paid to the 'ordinary' stuff that holds it together, so it isn't held together properly.

1:22:17 Actor David Miller, who plays the jewellery shop assistant showing Gail and R. Brian engagement rings, also played the part of Annie Walker's nervous driving instructor Don Grady in August and December 1976. He later played a third, minor role on the show, that of talent agent Gus Ferris, in July and August 1988. Another case of 'actor re-cycling', by the Corrie casting directors! David Miller never rose above minor parts on the Street. But it's surprising how often an actor who ends up with a starring role in 'Coronation Street', turns out to have played one or more prior, bit-parts on the soap. In February 1978, actor Peter Dudley played the jeweller who sold Alf and Renee Roberts their engagement ring. It was one of several Corrie walk-on parts his loyal pal Pat Phoenix, aka Elsie Tanner, lobbied producers to give him. Peter was desperate to win a permanent role, and a year later he triumphantly returned in a blaze of publicity to play Bert Tilsley, who moved into Coronation Street with wife Ivy and son Brian in January 1979. Bert quickly became a hit with the viewers, and Peter was a popular member of the cast, winning many friends among his fellow actors. The character Bert Tilsley appeared on the show from January 1979 to July 1983. After a long absence from the Street due to a pending court case and serious health issues, Peter Dudley died of a heart attack aged 48, on 20th October 1983. Bert Tilsley's death was featured on screen on 16th January 1984. Lynne Perrie was a great friend of Peter Dudley. She gave some truly heart rending and authentic performances as Bert's grieving widow Ivy, calling on her genuine grief at Peter's recent, premature death.

We only tend to notice the actor recycling due to the speed at which we race through months and months worth or episodes! I feel bad for Peter Dudley. It could not have been easy for him to have the tabloid rags trying to ruin his career. I thought his character, Bert, had a lot of potential and was a great counterweight to Poison Ivy. Peter was not closeted among his friends and colleagues. And as you say, he was well liked. It was a time when newspapers were abandoning the 'open secrets' of famous people for the sake of sales.

Goes to show how continuous the writing has been, though - having a mother like Audrey would leave deep wounds on the soul which can only be ameliorated through radical self awareness...Gail never had that, and being a young mother on the Street left her no latitude for developing any. And so it goes...

When Brian and Gail are wed will the priest conducting the ceremony have the bravery to ask if it's a good idea if Bingo from the Banana Splits marries a hamster. Helen Worth was in her late 20s at this point and is playing a 20-year-old. Presumably the breathy way Gail talks, which a lass several years younger would think immature, is to accentuate the character's youth, however it just sounds silly. Meanwhile, the world's biggest control freak, Ivy the poison dwarf, seems to think Brian is 16.

They recycled the wig storyline in the ‘90s with Reg, which had some funny scenes like Curly dislodging it with the hand dryer in the gents and winding Reg up by nearly giving the game away to Maureen - I’ve got a tummy ache, and you know what’s good for a tummy ache? Syrup of f-w-f-w-figs! 😂. Then Reg hid it behind the pull down mirror in the car, then it landed in Maureen’s lap next time causing the car to leave the road down an embankment then Curly chased after her with it, like a dead rat or something lol 😂. Close, but I think Fred’s story here is funniest 😂

Ogdens should have kept quails instead, they lay everyday, eggs are pretty and very nutritious. Birds are pretty, look like a cross between a hawk and a kiwi bird (well the golden giant variety of quails). Even in that teensy backyard they would thrive as they can build a decent sized hutch there, they only require, sand, little bits of hay, high protein and calcium pellets and some fine ground oyster shells and ofc water. Also, they are very hardy birds and can tolerate the midlands winter temperature. You can sell the eggs at a very good price to pretentious people like Annie Walker (and many people like her exist 🤣).

I got right into these, I'm dying to see the rest of '79 appear in my feed! I guess with the 10 week, Summer strike taking Corrie off air, '79 was a short year for The Street. How many more months are there after these April episodes, before the plug was pulled, did it come off air in August? As I recall, when the show returned in October it hit the ground running with some big storylines, chief among them the wedding of Gail to R. Brian, and the first introduction of Vera's feckless husband Jack (at the wedding). Prior to this, his significant other was the Rovers dartboard! Off air, Pat Phoenix took an extended break to have a facelift (the real reason she couldn't attend Gail's wedding, not illness as was claimed in the script). I always chuckle when she makes her return, stepping out of a taxi wearing enormous sunglasses - in the middle of winter! The facelift was actually a very good one. As she described her heartbreak at fleeing Torquay after splitting with cab driver boyfriend Ron, she didn't look down in the dumps at all but fabulously rested and 10 years younger! I recall you said in another post 1979 featured the last ever scenes between Annie and Billy Walker. I feel quite emotional just typing that!

2:17:02 Poor old Alf, even Mother Teresa would have lost patience with Renee's mithering by now and gobbed her one! This storyline about Alf's post head-injury, and resulting, Jeykll and Hyde personality change is hilarious. Alf's always been one for a quiet life, especially where women are concerned. It's so funny and out of character seeing him lose his rag with Renee and Annie Walker! I felt so sorry for Annie here! 2:40:53

@@gilliangrant8764 Awww, I love little Annie! She can be a crashing snob I know, and her terrible airs and graces would drive a nun to drink. But when the chips are down she loves her friends (and Rovers staff), is fiercely loyal, and has a heart of gold. Who could forget Annie's many kindnesses, like the time Hilda tearfully confided in her that Stan had left her. Annie took Hilda into the Rovers back room, gave her a cuppa and a shoulder to cry on, then kept Hilda's confidence after their private chat AND gave her a bottle of brandy for her nerves. That's a real friend!

Christopher Quinten got a lot of stick for his acting. But honestly, I can't see what the problem was. Ok, the very early scenes were a little wooden, but he's really not that bad at all, and certainly up to the standards of today's soap trash.

I think Len was originally cast as an Albert Finney-type figure, but when he turned into an uncouth, beer-bellied ale-swilling bully, they still tried to portray him as an earthy charismatic sex symbol.

To think you get horrible people in real life like Annie Walker, So Renee has to buy just say a pack of six cans sell one to her and no one wants the rest, I worked in supermarkets for thirty years and you get outrageous customers asking for the even more outrageous things knowing they don't sell it to be a pain, But Doris Speed plays her so well to make you feel like drop kicking her lol

Is it my imagination, or after a character has a big storyline, do they then disappear for a while? Seems to happen all the time? Does the actor then have a holiday, or is it to give other storylines featuring other characters a turn?

No it's not your imagination that always happens. That's why it's great when Gail's storyline is finished because then you know she'll piss off for a while. Either they are not seen for a few episodes or they spend time drinking or eating.
