Cornell bed bug expert urges creation of task force

Cornell University entomologist Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann, an internationally known bed bug expert, has spent the past decade helping families and municipalities combat the rise of this suddenly resurgent parasite. As a member of New York City's specially created Bed Bug Advisory Board, she helped craft the Spring 2010 report that calls for a coordinated education and control campaign, and urges the creation of a "Bed Bug Task Force" to oversee the effort.

The bugs are being shipped in on items from other countries. Clothing, rugs, yarns, textiles. I’ve seen bugs on clothes at Walmart. One was a pair of socks. I took them off the hook, stretched them to see their give, I rolled the cuff down and saw something dark. I pulled it down farther and there was a bug attached to the ankle fold seam!

Yea they have to go. They need to simply eliminate them from the planet or reprogram them to feed on something else

I am living in an Island and 2 months ago, I saw one bed bug when searching for any kind of insect that could be biting me. Well, it was important to confirm the type of insect. Bed bugs in the building!!! They came with travellers into suitcases and bags. Although I eliminated bed bugs at home, I warned to community and I keep watching and making treatments to avoid bugs came be back. This problems has grown a lot in last 20 years.

I'm an old lady 75, had a stroke 7 years ago. Walk with a walker. One of my aids had Bed Bugs and believed that she had sprayed her old rent house and got rid of them. She was just PURE DUMB !! So, she brought the bugs to my little HUD apartment. The first heat treat didn't get them all. My second is tomorrow. It has nearly driven me crazy 🤪 having to do the work done ( all alone ) to get ready for the treatment. It has been HORRIBLE !!

Horrid creatures. I’m surprised Noah let them on the Ark, but I guess he was under orders.

I caught them traveling. I freaked out wanting to blame somebody and kill somebody. When cooler heads prevailed I got down to decluttering, vacuuming, bagging and washing almost everything and kept in new bags. This was during a heatwave so it was miserable. Plus the demands at work needing me to work 12 hr days. I had to take a sick day to go to war. After the decluttering, I steamed, steamed and steamed, then steamed some more. Sprayed with Crossfire and dusted with Cimexa. The battle was won. Two weeks later I sprayed again with Crossfire and dusted once more and three years later. The war was won. Don’t forget to encase your mattress and box spring. And be vigilent. Cimexa allegedly last 10 years but I dust quarterly

Airbnb in a Strata building creates a nightmare. Due to the traffic the bedbugs are increasing. To combat them you need the whole community working together. However, the owners of units participating in Airbnb tend not to report their infestations as the process for treating the units can take over a week and they loose money if they can't get money for their unit. Instead they tell no one and will do a cursory treatment or spray so they can keep renting. Their greed creates a problem for the entire community in the building.

Yes! I certainly agree! If the stigma attached to having bed bugs was not so high then maybe better treatments could be found!

Yes bed bugs will thrive anywhere they decide to set up shop because there's a reason they nested in a particular location in the first place... And the only reason bed bugs still exist is because we have done a terrible job of collectively getting rid of them... BTW it doesn't surprise me that Ohio is near the top of the list for bed bug infestations because as a man who lives in Longmont Colorado I think to myself just picture a bunch of people as dusty as the sorry looking people who live here but just a whole state of it...

I can see where the mental illness would come in. I unfortunately got a small case of BB and am in the process of preparing for the pest control guy to come do his thing. Now, here's the thing...with BBs showing up everywhere, i.e. movies, hotels, and I work as an temp apartment leasing agent and have had to work at some places that had BB problems. So...I'm thinking i could've gotten them in several ways--my daughter who lived with me traveled frequently out of town. Her dad does the same for work...goes out of town and lo and behold they happen to be in the SAME town...neither live with me now, but her dad had visited. Or my job...or maybe when I traveled to L.A. Nonetheless, the itching is relentless and I'm so glad I'm not even at the stage of the poor guy in the picture. Also, OMT...the state of OH has at least FOUR cities in the worst 50 cities for BB and then there were other midwestern states which made up 25% of the list, and all these people just LOVE to come to the state where I live to get away from their weather...well, it seems they brought them here too, smh

I know. I had my meds uped 3 times. Exterminators says no bb but I showed proof of 3 I found. To find out that bed bugs were here before I moved in and tenants dont complain like me because upstate NY says tenants must pay for it. Uggggg.

If you think you've got problems, my gov't here in Canada won't let me have Cimexa, Temprid, Crossfire to name just a few. We're defenceless, what is up with that? There's DE and that's about all. My neighbours have likely got bedbugs now for the sole reason that I couldn't get these things. (landlord sent a cowboy who has no clue, random spraying twice with God knows what and that's all)
