Corneal Crosslinking Procedure for Keratoconus

An inside look at how Corneal Crosslinking for vision correction is performed. Dr. Terrence Doherty at Loden iVision Centers is a Fellowship Trained Cornea expert.
Corneal Crosslinking is a vision correction procedure for patients with Keratoconus. Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than the more normal gradual curve.

    I’ve had this surgery on both eyes very recently (in the UK) and I’ve got to say it’s not as bad as it looks, the anaesthetic eye drops help stop any pain during the surgery, and I was sent home with some to use that day to help as well. The first day is pretty difficult to deal with, I recommend taking it easy, going to sleep, using anaesthetic eye drops and pain killers (whether it’s paracetamol or prescribed codeine- I was prescribed codeine). After day 1, the pain usually has subsided, but I noticed my eyes were pretty sensitive to light for a few days afterwards. I thought I’d mention the extensive medication you have to take after the surgery… I was prescribed a mix of eye drops and tablets, most of them were only on a 3-7 day course so you’re done with most of the meds after a week. Although, I was prescribed 4 weeks of Aciclovir anti virals 4 times a day, which made me very sick after I got my first eye done, but they lowered the dosage to 2 times a day after my second eye was done, and so far I’m feeling okay. Don’t let the video put you off, I’m currently 1 week post surgery watching TV happily and able to go out and enjoy myself with no issue. Just be prepared for a painful first day, and wear sunglasses to help.

    Hi / Mr. Mrs My father is suffering from Keratokonus, While serving in Afghanistan he injured his eyes and after than gradually he had eye problems. for now he has 40% vision left in eye, and almost 0% in his right eye, and we were offered morbid solutions by our doctors such as impacted eye removal. Our question is, does your clinic treat or perform anything to repair or fix keratokonus, and is it even treatable at this stage or not?. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    follow-up - i had no incisions in my operation just drops and light. two days were not the best - a constant irritation but the narcotic they gave me was more than enough to get me through. third day i feel back to normal with a clear contact on my eye that they'll take off next week. the only recommendation i give is at night when you put your eye guard on - be sure to use more than just two pieces of tape - my first night i took mine off in the middle of the night without knowing and was touching my eye which freaked me out. just use like four long pieces of tape and you should be good

    Hi, Dr Monson, from Monson Vision. Often we will perform epi-on cross-linking (no need to remove epithelium). the cross-linking fixes (and flattens a little) the cornea. Simultaneously will perform INTACS corneal inlays to resolve the irregularity and astigmatism. This puts many our young patients in range for EVO ICL or TORIC EVO ICL. Hope this helps

    Hi I have a question. I recently had the crosslinking procedure done 3 days ago in Mexico. I did both eyes and I was only under the uv light for 5 minutes each eye when i have seen that most patients are under the uv light for 30 minutes per eye. I was also not given a contact to protect my eye after the surgery. Is rhia normal?

    It's nothing to freak out about. they put numbing drops on your eye so you won't feel anything. The only thing that got uncomfortable for me after a while was the UV light that shined into the eye for what felt like forever. After the procedure, it was fine too, no pain no discomfort. What I did personally was I took 2 painkillers (even though I didn't feel any pain) and went straight to bed. Stayed relaxed till the next day and there was no pain or discomfort. I hope this helped. • @EricOrtner

    @EricOrtner

    7 жыл бұрын

    Procedure itself went fine. From the time I was brought back for pre-op to walking out the door was less than 2.5 hours. Nothing was painful during the procedure, just a little freaky when they rub the surface of your eye & everything hazes over. The center I went to doesn't provide you with the prescription for Tylenol with codeine until the day of procedure. So I only had access to normal Tylenol until I got prescription filled. The numbing drops wore off about 10 minutes after walking out the door. I live about 1 hour & 25 minutes from the center, so that wasn't exactly fun. Spent the first 12 hours post-op in the darkest corner of my basement and had a family member help me with putting the various drops in on a schedule. After getting the "good stuff" Tylenol was able to fall asleep. By next morning, I was still light sensitive but pain was tolerable. Pain levels decreased again in the next 24 hours, then again in the next 24. Felt normal 4 days after. Light sensitivity didn't existed for at least 14 days after, would wear Cocoons fitovers on my glasses while driving. Also suggest asking center that does it for you, if they provide goggles for when you sleep to avoid the chance you rub your eye while sleeping. I wore mine for the first 20 days post-op to bed, which is more than suggested time. My vision initially was worse because you have a surgical non-prescription contact in and the eye isn't healed. Contact was removed 5 days after procedure, pain level & light sensitivity increases for about 48 hours after because when you blink it's back to being on the repaired eye. Vision levels got back to pre-op 20 days after procedure. My level of correction needed decreased by 1 level (I can't remember correct term) at 30 days. At 60 days, it was still 1 level better. I haven't gone back since or purchased new glasses since the eye can continue to heal/change for months after. I'm also planning on having my other eye done this fall. If you count the procedure, the various drops, Tylenol with codeine, Cocoons and post-op visits, I'm at $3500. My insurance covered a % of the drops, Tylenol with codeine and post-op visits. It didn't cover the actual procedure. I have Blue Cross & Blue Shield. I know the center I went to is on the higher range of cost, but is the nearest to where I live and has been doing this procedure since it was in clinical trials. If you have other questions, let me know.

    The won't, but the numbing drops it will be painless. Also, my center gives you option for pill taken 45 minutes before procedure that calms your nerves. I'm drawing a blank on the name of it. But I would suggest taking it.

    For me (in the UK), it was 30 minutes of Riboflavin being injected every 2 minutes (I.e. 15 times), then whilst the light was on my eye for another 30 minutes, they dropped the riboflavin into my eye every 2 minutes again. So total surgery for me was 1 hour, including 30 minutes of UVA light

    Well, my honest opinion to this, Corneal Cross-linking is not enough, it stops the progression of Keratoconus but your vision won't improve at all in many cases its even worse then before , if you want immediate results then you should do CXL + Lasik\Lasek this is the only way to get immediate results and a super clear vision. No more double visions, halos and you don't even need to wear any hard or Skleral Contact lenses. I had CXL 8 month ago now I need to wait 4 more month to have the Lasik\Lasek Laser eye surgery, if I knew it better, I had done CXL + Lasik\Lasek from the beginning, it cost a fortune but Its Worth it.
