Coriolis Effect or Why You Can’t Shoot Straight

Earth is a spinning sphere and as such has some quirks. One of which is the apparent deflection of moving objects not attached to the ground. For example any object shot into the sky will curve to the left if flying in the southern hemisphere and right if in the northern hemisphere. This deflection is due to the rotation of our planet and is called the Coriolis Effect. The Coriolis Effect is why the Foucault Pendulum rotates clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter clockwise in the southern hemisphere, why airplanes adjust course, and why hurricanes spin clockwise in the southern hemisphere and counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere.

I spent 14 years in the Marines and went through Scout Sniper training school, weather its a rifle bullet, artillery, tank shells or any other projectile, we never accounted for coriolis, I've never seen the formulas for it, and in combat the spotter is not feeding the sniper corrections for it either

The east and west arent perpendicularly affected by the rotational force of the earth. If shooting east or west the bullet will not turn but hit higher or lower depending on the direction. Otherwise good example.

If I'm not mistaken when you shoot east and west no matter which hemisphere you're in it won't affect the bullet the direction of the bullet (left/right) only elevation Correct me if I'm wrong

You're wrong the earth doesn't spin look at the problems at hand with Coriolis critically. The bullet isn't in the air long enough to be affected by the spin if a plane or helicopter isn't affected by it. All 3 leave the Earth's surface, 1 travels much faster but shorter distance's the other 2 are in flight like a bullet for hours lol seriously please think.....

correct. the coriolis effect does not affect bullets. gun chamber causes bullet to spin, wide variations in wind and humidity over distance. every sniper knows the earth is flat.

  • @jpbrooks2

@dranopitt1202 I think you're right. A rail gun shoots a projectile at around Mach 6 (or approximately 4400 miles per hour) at a range of around 100 miles. Whereas, the earth rotates at around 1000 miles per hour. So a projectile shot from a rail gun will probably not be in the air long enough to have its trajectory significantly affected by the Coriolis effect. JPB

Because you're both moving east at the same linear speed. You're drone also may use GPS to remain at a certain spot. Coriolis is mostly for ballistic items like long range artillery fired North or South.

Why do you use examples that contradict each other to explain physics? If a bullet travels faster closer to the equator then why doesnt a plane ? If a bullet misses the target north to south then how do planes land at their destination ( when the flight plan is picked before take off)? On one hand we are told the earths spin does not affect the plane because its pulled along by the atmosphere but on the other the bullet does get affected. You cant have it both ways. These presentations remind me more of infomercials than science. Im surprised by all the comments praising this video questions. I guess it takes a school drop out to point out these things and ask some questions?

The earths spin absolutely effects airplanes, but a bullet is a projectile, where as a plane is not and it’s flight path can be corrected as it travels.

  • @nickmerix2900

@@bobbybalogne2565 you should really think it through before you answer. The plane is traveling say 600 mph east add the 900mph it had when it took off due to earth spin. Now it needs to make a right turn to line up with the runway which is also moving 900mph . So the plane slows from 600 to 300 to start the turn . It cant just stop and turn in mid air. So now we have the plane moving at 900+ 300 and the runway moving at 900 . So how will the plane line up with the runway when its moving 300 mph faster and according to the Coriolis effect would have a side drift ? It will basically have a 45 degree vector when trying to make a 90 degree turn

@@nickmerix2900 you have a skewed understanding of physics. I could not exactly figure out what is wrong with your statement but you seem to have some misunderstandings about circular motion and the starting velocity of the airplane. Remember that the plane has a three dimensional motion. Khan academy is a great resource in learning physics and other topics, I would start there.

Sight in your rifle scope on a range directed North-South. That’s the only way you can get correct elevation for your rifles ballistics at distance. Long range basically “starts” at 400yds. Then, when one has to shoot east or west, they can make elevation adjustments for earth’s rotation as (in the case of say a 7mm Rem) their rifle will impact 7-8” high shooting east and 4-5” low shooting west at 1000yds. Also all bullets impact a little to the right at long distance because of right hand rifling in the barrels. This is called spin drift. Now explain to me how a Boeing 737 flying 500mph can leave LA and “catch up” to NYC when it’s moving away at 500mph?

Airplanes are pulling themselves through air that is moving the same speed as the earth below (assuming no wind). There is no 1000mph wind at the equator so we know the atmosphere moves with the planet's surface.
