thanks guys, loved the video. I'd like to see some content about how you guys deal with the mental side of playing live, being confident, not just playing "safe" etc, and if there are any tips for keeping your subconscious in check. I'm at a stage where I can play most of things I want to be able to play (when there's no pressure), but I'm only ever playing at 60 or 70% live. Its rare that I really hit my peak. Athletes and pro sports players have psychological routines to help them operate closer to their personal best. Any suggestions or experience you can share on that? I think it would help a lot of players.

  • @JeffMcErlain

Gavin Leyfield that’s a great question and I battle with it as well. It really comes down to performing regularly. It’s the only way I can get into that zone. Rehearsal can only get you so far, it’s about being on a stage improvising. We call them “gig chops” or “road chops”. I have unfortunately not found anyway to shortcut. As for not playing safe, that comes with comfort onstage as well. That and just going for it. I hope this helps!

@@JeffMcErlain thanks Jeff, largely, I'm scared to f**k up in front of people. I need to try to play with "abandon" and no-fear. I play in a guitar pop band, not a blues or rock setting. The guitar parts are quite prescribed and specific. I don't have a lot of freedom, just little snatches of arrangement here and there where I could stretch out more. I think it would be easier if I were trading 16 bar solos with another guitar player in a blues setting.

Great lesson Bret!! question: Does Corey play hybrid picking only with this kinda country/blues style or will he play that always (even when hard rock and 'slash-style' bends)? Asking to understand if hybrid picking is more a 'country/blues' type thing or shall I'll practice to apply it to everything. I'll much appreciate your reply :)

@@coreycongilio Thanks so much for the quick reply Corey! I didn't know you had your own channel. I just subscribed and will look up. The reason I asked this question is cause it's probably very different to adopt hybrid picking for rock/metal solos. It seems that many in country music adopt it, but I hardly saw rock guys that do. If you don't have a demo of how you apply it to some rock solo (especially with many bends, like Gilmour or Slash stuff) - then hopefully you can make one - just a suggestion :) thanks again so much for your quick reply.
