Cordon apple trees: making growing much easier

I'm all for finding ways to reduce the workload in the garden so I'm getting some help with watering my raised bed using a solar drip irrigation system.
And it's getting windy so I'm staking those cordon apple trees to give them a bit of support

Hey so , I’ve have inherited some old fruit trees and added some new ones in last couple yrs to my allotment. It’s amazing the fruit you got off the small tower potted apple tree. I think moving forward you need to choose how you want it to grow. These trees look like they are screaming for the tops to be lopped off so it can focus on fruit below. One thing I’ve learnt is to remove leaves and branches from around the trunk for maybe 10 cm at least, make a chimney for central air circulation. I learnt that staking trees can reduce their ability to grow strong. And the angle you did isn’t what I learnt was best. What’s best to support against prevailing winds etc. 😊 Lopping off the top, reducing excess branches will allow it to grow strong, without splints, which can hinder good growth. I also decided to prune on goblet style. And make sure not to let it grow above lopping off height (I’m 5.3 so 2m is fine by me, and the trees produce more fruit than I can process at that height. Lest not waste time energy or apples :-) ps please can you clarify if the raised beds the trees are in are open bottomed or closed, this affects root growth and stability. I was amazed at how deep and far some crop, roots grow, 15 ft for asparagus.

  • @eliandkate

Thank you for your concern Kirsten but all is in hand 😀 Over the last few years I’ve shown how to prune these trees to help production as well as how productive the trees are after. That pruning happens late summer, not now, and the tops are part of that pruning and will get pruned again. I explained about the staking in the video, both why it would be beneficial not to and why I had to as well as why I was staking the way I did. 😀

Hihi, setting up these solar watering systems really is annoying. But when the job is done it makes life so much easier. 😍 But I have to say something that does not even have anything to do with garden in any ways. The scottish football fans are doing a great job as advertising Scotland as a great country. It's such a joy to see them and how they make friends and behave. You can be proud of your folks. I had solar irrigation in my greenhouse a few years ago, and it was excellent... but the utter faff of taking it out for the winter and putting it back in again in spring meant I never used it again! I guess it's worse because I use big fabric pots and can't guarantee to put them in the same places each year... and now the pipes are all already cut to do specific locations. I guess if you live somewhere that it never freezes it's better. Because of my wee cat, I'm now never away for more than a couple of days at a time, and I actually like watering ... Gives me a chance to inspect my plants, prune, harvest, weed.

When I add irrigation it rains, when I water it rains. Too bad that didn’t work last year in drought. We finally have rain-Thanks for sending some over😂. I’ll send you some of this heat. I’m only dressed like you because of mosquitoes. Nifty water setup. I love our irrigation. We’d have loads of plums and apples, but we got too cold when they were blooming. I think we have 1 plum and 3 apples. We did have a great strawberry harvest, a handful of honey berries, a few blueberries coming and maybe a great blackberry year.

I also lost all but one tree of pears, most of my cherries and all my plums to a 2 week freezing spell just at the wrong time! Apples were mostly later and look ok. At least I have one late hard pear tree. I had a "Pearpocalypse" last year with a crazy ridiculous amount of pears and I did manage to preserve a great deal and haven't run out yet.
