    So easy to follow - clear and concise unlike the majority of you tube videos. So refreshing to hear an English voice that speaks slowly enough to take it all in. Fantastic. It is still useful in 2024.

My laptop has been getting all fucked up and I needed to know how to move some of my documents and pictures onto a memory stick so I could put them in another computer so they won't get lost or deleted. I would die if they got deleted or I wouldn't be able to find or use them. You are a life saver. Thank you so much :)

    I would NOT move programs to a portable hard drive as your PC will not know where to find them, also some programs are designed specifically to run from a drive that is always connected such as the C drive.

    As far as software goes, for example, Microsoft Office or music production software such as FL Studio or Ableton, is it possible to install them to an external hard drive so I would be able to work from either my home desktop or my laptop on the go? It would be a lot easier and more fluid to be able to only have to deal with one copy of everything rather than two, but I'm not sure how the software licenses work and what they might prevent as far as using them on external hard drives goes.

    Chris, any ideas on this? I've been trying to send files from a Windows Vista Home Edition PC to an external hard drive. When I plug in the external hard drive, it shows up in Hard Disc drives on the D drive. It does not show up in devices with removable storage. When I right click on a file to send it to the external hard drive, this option does not show in the drop down menu. So I can't send it there.

    +LordBluesman Right Click the file or folder you want to send to the external hard disk drive, move your mouse to send to then click on the item in the list that has (D:) in its name. That should do it.

    Yes you can copy the whole folder across as long as you have the space on your flash drive, you can go into downloads and the hold down the CTRL key then tap A then let go of the CTRL key to select all the files in your download folder.

  • @cwtek1

    @cwtek1

    8 жыл бұрын

    In some programs you can choose the location you can save your files, the way you do this differs from program to program, a good place to start is to look in the programs options. However please be sure you have a backup copy of your files elsewhere, as external hard drives can go wrong just as much as internal hard drives.

  • @joyrenae1

    Hi Chris, Thanks a lot for your informative video. Your instructions worked like a charm. I am tech challenged, and you made life a bit easier for me. I want to know, if it's safe for me to delete the original files from my computer now that I have it on my external drive so I can have more space? And I'd like to know would the external drive be considered my back up. I first clicked on back up, but I don't think I had enough space. It seems as though my external drive only have 71 GB out of 931GB for back up storage. Well, at least that's the way I interpreted it. I thank you in advance for your time.

  • @cwtek1

    @cwtek1

    8 жыл бұрын

    Your external drive is just a likely to go wrong as your computer is, a backup is regarded as a 2nd copy of your important files. It's up to you if you want to delete the files from your computer to free up space, but please bear in mind if your external hard drive dies and you don't have copies of these files elsewhere they could be lost for good. If you do need to delete the files from your computer to free up space I would suggest purchasing a 2nd external hard drive to store a 2nd copy of these files.

    Hi, what I would like to do is make more space on my c drive. Can I copy or transfer programs from c drive to a pen drive for space?

    Programs are best left on the C drive I would look at moving Photos, Music and Videos first, if you still need more space then perhaps, look into getting your local computer shop to fit a larger hard drive.

    I have a problem - I have an external USB hard drive that I have copied my movies onto. I use that to connect to my BluRay player. But I want to create a clone backup, an "echo" on another external USB hard drive, for safe keeping. Then if any changes I make to the Master I can the "echo" to the backup hard drive. If I add, it will add, if I delete, it will delete. I have used Microsoft SyncToy and it works fine when the Master is a fixed hard drive to a backup external hard drive. But it won't backup one external USB hard drive to another external USB drive. Then I tried some other backup programs, like FreeFileSync and it too won't do it. Does anybody know an actual software that does this - seems so simple and yet scratching my head for a solution. .

    May I ask if you delete the original file you send does the copied one disappear too or not

    No the copied file on the external drive will stay unless you manually delete it from there too.

    Should you delete the photos on computer after transferring to stick? Thank you.

    Tarquin45 You should only delete the photos from the computer if you have another copy elsewhere, because if the stick gets lost or fails then you will loose your photos.

    Since few days ago my pc won't start to windows until I disconnect the line for my external drives. How do I make it load to windows without having to disconnect and connect again ? It's pretty annoying.

    +78l we4 It could be a sign your external drive maybe on its way out! Although I have seen some external drives will cause a delay in starting windows on some machines, unfortunately I am not sure why this is!
