The Conquest of Greece
Philip assembled the largest Macedonian army yet, gave his 18-year-old son Alexander a commanding post among the senior Macedonian generals, and marched into Greece. The Greeks likewise assembled their largest army since the Persian invasion to face the Macedonian invasion. At Chaeronea in central Greece where the two armies met, the whole of Greece put 35,000 infantry and 2,000 cavalry on the field, while the Macedonians had 30,000 infantry and 2,000 cavalry. Although outnumbered, with suburb tactics and well coordination of the phalanx with the cavalry, the Macedonian barbarian defeated the united Greek army. Among the Greeks, the Athenians, Thebans, and the Achaeans suffered the biggest losses. The ancient Roman and Greek historians, consider the battle of Chaeronea, on August 2nd, 338 BC as an end to Greek liberty and history. Greece will not regain its freedom from foreign occupation until early 19th century AD.
Once he ascended on the Macedonian throne, Alexander quickly disposed of all of his domestic enemies by ordering their execution. But soon he had to act outside Macedonia. Philips death caused series of rebellions among the conquered nations and the Illyrians, Thracians, and Greeks saw a chance for independence. Alexander acted swiftly. He forced his way into Greece despite the roads leading to the country being blocked by the Thessalians. As soon as he restored Macedonian rule in northern Greece, he marched into southern Greece. His speed surprised the Greeks and by the end of the summer 336 BC they had no other choice but to acknowledge his authority.

Actually Chaeronea was a battle between the northern Greek states of Macedonia and Locris against the Southern Greek states of Athens and Thebes. [Richard Stoneman Honorary professor of Greek, Exeter University, USA, 'Alexander the Great'.] "The ancient Macedonians then were racially Greeks. the relation might not be that of British and Scots, as of Germans and Austrians, but in the case of Macedon, it was the smaller partner which effected the 'Anschluss'. [Peter Strauss, Cornell University, USA] "Macedonia was a funny Greek state, always the bridesmaid but never the bride".

Well this move 'Alexander the Great' above clearly states that the ancient Macedonians regarded themselves as Greeks.

[Dr. Stephen Batchelor, 'The Ancient Greeks for Dummies'] "Ancient Macedonia was - and still is today - a territory of northern Greece. The ancient Macedonians were of Greek origin and spoke a broader rougher dialect of Greek."
