COPIAPOA cactus blooms & cultivation tips from my collection

Cacti from the genus Copiapoa have become incredibly popular amongst collectors and hobbyists over the past years. These exotic and beautiful cacti originate from one of the driest deserts in the world, the coastal Atacama desert of Chile in South America. In this video I introduce you to some of the species that I grow and their wonderful blooms. Also, I share some of the cultivation tips that have served me well over the years.
These plants need very careful watering as they are quite sensitive to overwatering. I grow them in a 100% mineral substrate, so no organic compounds added. Two critical elements for their succesful cultivation are also: avoiding too strong direct sun exposure (they are sensitive to sunburn!) as well as providing very good ventilation and air movement. Hence, I always have an electric fan running very close to my Copiapoa cacti, providing a constant gentle breeze. The blooms of these magnificent cacti are simply beautiful, not to mention their spines and often waxy light-grayish coating on their epidermis.
These plants are not your typical "beginners cacti" as they do require a bit of growing experience with these plants. Also, they appreciate a bright and warm location, preferably in a greenhouise or conservatory - however, as mentioned above, not in direct full sun, especially around noon-time. These cacti are quite slow-growing and do not appreciate a lot of fertilizing or watering. After all, in their natural habitats, they often survive for months on simply the moisture of the fog that the cool offshore ocean air generates as it rolls in over the hot Atacama desert plain and hills.
Enjoy!
Joe

Thanks so much Lyn, awesome that you enjoyed this video on growing my Copiapoa cacti and also their beautiful blooms! I hope indeed that yours will all be flowering for you once again this coming growth season! So sorry to hear, and it really is so annoying when our plants are hit by mites, as you say it often knocks them back by a year or two! Sending you and Hans very best cactus greetings, across to you both on the beautiful Emerald Isle!!🙌👍🙏🌵🌵🌺🌸🌼☃️❄️💚😎☀️

I have been growing my Copiapoa with a lot of success, but this video really makes me mindful of their special needs. Thank you, Joe! I do have a fan running on mine, and last summer I just misted a few of them every morning and never really watered them. I was trying to imitate the dew that you mentioned that collects on their bodies. They also bloomed twice during the season, the second time after I brought them indoors in October.

Thank you, Terry, that sounds fabulous! You clearly are already pretty experienced with growing your Copiapoa succesfully, which is brilliant! Indeed, they do love their regular misting in the mornings during warm weather! Great to hear from you and about your own Copiapoa growing experiences, and enjoy your weekend ahead! 👍🙌🙏😊🌵😍🌼🌵🌼💚😎☀️☃️❄️

Many thanks, Lori, really super that you enjoyed this video and found it useful! These cacti are indeed fantastic to grow - not always the easiest to look after, however, and unfortunately often also quite expensive! Nevertheless, hope you find a nice selection of Copiapoa to your liking, good luck and lot's of fun with them, happy growing!!

Thank you for this video! I have a few Copiapoa seedlings. If they mature (hopefully!) I'll know to to keep my hand off the watering can. I tend to be a bit too generous when watering. You gave really useful tips I will be sure to follow.

Many thanks Justin, very happy that you liked my Copiapoa cacti! Excellent and good for you that you have Copiapoa seedlings, that is indeed the most inexpensive way to build up a small collection of these without spending a small fortune! Unfortunately, because they have become so popular in recent years, they are quite rare and expensive to get - so seed grown is definitely the way to go! Hope you are having a great day, take care and happy growing!🙌👍🙏😊🌵🌼🌵💚😎☀️

Thanks so much, Clyde, very happy that you liked these Copiapoa. Indeed, unfortunately Copiapoa have in recent years suddenly become so popular that they are also quite difficult and often pretty expensive to acquire as plants. Nevertheless I hope you are succesful with your search, private sellers on eBay occasionally offer young plants at decent value. Keeping my fingers crossed! Very best cactus greetings to you at Morris Park in the Ozarks, USA! 🙏👍🙌🌵🌼🌵💚😎☀️

Hello Cheryl, great to read your message and thanks so much for watching! Very happy also that you liked the Copiapoa cacti from my collection! They are indeed a little special with their requirements, but never say never, haha! With time comes experience and one day you will be an experienced cactus & other succulents grower too! In my own first few years of growing cacti, i would also never have imagined growing some of the plants i now do, haha. Just stick with them, and your plants will reward you, especially cacti! Hope you are having an awesome weekend, very best wishes, take care and of course happy growing/dormancy! 🙏🙏🙌👍😊🌵🪴🌵🌼🌺🌸💚😎☀️

Many thanks indeed, Daz, much appreciated! Yep, agreed, Copiapoa are a wonderful genus of cacti and there are C. cinereas that are simply just mind-blowing beautiful! The only problem is that everyone else - besides the two of us, haha - thinks so too, so these plants over the past decade have unfortunately also become mind-blowing expensive and over-valued!! Plus, because they grow so slow, their habitats have often been raided for mature plants, being sold illegally in huge numbers...very sad! So it's really good to see when people actually grow these in larger numbers from seeds, off plants in cultivation. All my larger Copiapoa are seed-grown too, but it has taken over 20 years...! Worth it!! Wishing you and Edith very best regards and hopefully a wonderful and relaxing weekend my friends! Stay warm, stay safe and happy growing/dormancy of course!!🙌👍😊🙏🌵🌼🌵🪴🌺🌸💚😎☀️❄️☃️❄️

Many thanks, Ana, really happy you enjoyed the video! I cannot say I have a very large collection of Copiapoa, around 20 or so, but the larger ones I have had for a quite long time, 25 or so years, seed grown. They used to be much more affordable and easy to obtain, before they became THE cacti to collect for so many now, haha! So I prefer collecting anti-cyclic, haha! Enjoy your weekend! 🙌😊🙏👍🌵🌼🌵💚😎☀️

Love a good Copiapoa Joe 😎 Love the way they lean North in habitat, into the sun, so they minimise the sun hitting the sides of the cactus. Good idea with the fan, make them think they're still in the Atacama 😎 Brilliant photography my friend, hope you have a lovely weekend 😊😊🌵🌵

Amazing video! I liked the combination of the footage of the blooms alongside with your commentary about the background info's on this genus 👍🏻 To be honest, it seems that Copiapoas are quite picky when it comes to their growing conditions, haha 😅 Nevertheless, you seem to have managed that perfectly considering these magnificient flower buds. What I found quite interesting is the colour of these plants. They don't really have this typical lighter green like many other genuses but rather a pretty dark green, maybe even a bit blackish 🤔 Wishing you a great Adventszeit! :) 🕯🎄☃️❄️

Hey Jacob, fantastic that you enjoyed the video and also it's format, that is great feedback, much appreciated! Yep, they are quite unusual and indeed picky too, haha! It's a good observation, with the colours of their epidermis. There are quite a lot of South American cacti, like Copiapoas, that have pretty dark-coloured stems, like many Eriosyces, Uebelmannianas, etc. and hard, waxy coatings, as protection against high UV levels. Wünsche Dir ebenfalls eine sehr schöne Adventszeit! Kakteengrüße aus einem tiefverschneiten Bayern zu Dir nach Kassel! 🙌👍😊🙏🌵🌵🌼🌼😎❄️☃️❄️💚🌵
