    On the SL's of that time, there was the 500 (for the V8s) and the 600 (with a V12). Also, those hoses you were wondering about towards the front of the car are likely the washer hose for the headlight wiper.

    MB - certain year models and sales markets (California & NY) had a smog pump with a clutch on it. The whole thought behind it was that on a cold start to pump a bunch of air down into the cat. convertor to heat it up and burn off whatever pollutants.

    Randy, you have Christine's cousin. Her sister wold be a Plymouth, as I have. I have always called my 1963 Fury her little sister, not because they were both Plymouths, but from experiences I had with her back in the '80's.

    The MG is an MGB - engine 1.8L, about 95bhp. The MGB GT (coupe version) could be purchased with a 3.5L V8 but that version (oddly) was not marketed in the US.

  • @GrandmaKeith
    @GrandmaKeith3 жыл бұрын

    Thats a nice SL

  • @1chish
    @1chish3 жыл бұрын

    Guys on that MGB its a BMC 'B' Series engine (hence the name) and they were all 1800cc. It also had a Zenith Stromberg (Federal) carburettor so doesn't pump fuel like a Webber or other fixed choke carburettors. Non Federal cars had twin SU carbs. So pumping the throttle pedal doesn't make any difference. It needs a choke to start. Earlier 'Bs' had two 6 volt batteries in series but a 1980 would have just had the one 12 volt you found. Always double check when jump staring a 'B'! Most non starting is down to Mr Lucas. Oh and Randy they did build an MGB V8 with a 3.5 litre engine that was developed by Rover from one originally used in the unibody GM 1961-1963 A-body platform Buick Special/Skylark and Oldsmobile F-85 and 1961-1962 Pontiac Tempest. The MGB GT V8 was sadly never exported to the USA though. There was also an MGC which was a straight 6 cylinder 2.9 litre.

    That's why the MGB was considered a 'hairdresser's car' in its home market, because of the small engine that didn't match the sporty looks. The rubber bumpers were a US safety mandated thing - the British ones got nice chrome ones. Most of our cars are rotten though whole new bodyshells are available. The Midget was indeed even smaller, based on a Mini floorplan / running gear and with the same 900 and 1275cc 4-cyls.

    MG in the '60s had a choice of two engines of the same weight and both fitted well. One was the powerful ultra-modern Rover 3.5 litre all-alloy V8 or an agricultural all iron 4 banger. Guess which one they chose. 15 years later they finally put the Rover V8 into the less popular GT coupe rather than the ever-popular convertible. How did the British car industry fail?
